Gender Differences in Treatment-Seeking British Pathological Gamblers.

Background and aim Gambling is a widespread recreational activity in the UK. A significant percentage of gamblers develop subclinical or clinically relevant problem gambling issues, but only a low percentage of them seek treatment. Although characteristics of pathological gamblers from treatment-seeking population have been examined in some research, only a few studies have explored the differences between females and males. This study aimed to examine the gender-related differences in demographics, gambling measures, and clinical variables in an outpatient sample of pathological gamblers seek

Emotional and behavioral adjustment in 4 to 11-year-old boys and girls with classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia and unaffected siblings.

It has been suggested that atypical hormone environments during early development may contribute to subsequent development of psychopathology. Also, it has been suggested that individuals with the autosomal recessive genetic variant, classic congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH), might be at increased risk of psychopathology. The present study examined emotional and behavioral adjustment in young children with CAH and their unaffected siblings in the United Kingdom. The parent-reported version of the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) was employed to assess adjustment in children ag

Comparison of impulsivity in non-problem, at-risk and problem gamblers.

As a non-substance addiction, gambling disorder represents the model for studying the neurobiology of addiction without toxic consequences of chronic drug use. From a neuropsychological perspective, impulsivity is deemed as a potential construct responsible in the onset and development of drug addiction. The objective of this study was to investigate the associations between impulsivity and gambling status in young adults with varying severity of gambling. A sample of 1120 college students, equally divided into non-problem, at-risk and problem gamblers, were administered multiple measures of i

Life events, substance use, psychological distress, and quality of life in male and female French gamblers.

BACKGROUND: Most studies on substance use, psychological distress, quality of life (QoL), and life events among gamblers are carried out on pathological gamblers seeking treatment, and sex differences are rarely investigated. The aim of this study was to explore the potential male-female differences in the relationship between these variables in a nationally representative French sample. METHODS: Three hundred thirty-two problem gamblers (PGs) and 25,314 non-problem gamblers or non-gamblers (NPGs) were evaluated for sociodemographic variables, gambling behavior, substance use, QoL, and life e

Classroom-based functional and adjunctive assessments: proactive approaches to intervention selection for adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

The present investigation evaluated the utility of classroom-based functional and adjunctive assessments of problem behaviors for 2 adolescents who met diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). For children with ADHD-ODD, environmental classroom variables, when systematically manipulated by teachers, were related to the occurrence and nonoccurrence of problem behaviors. Classroom interventions derived from information that was obtained during functional and adjunctive assessments and from subsequent analyses result…

Multifactorial nutritional and metabolic risk profiles for behavioral outcomes in Chinese children: a cross-sectional study at a Health Management Center using explainable machine learning and principal component analysis.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral problems affect 10-20% of children worldwide. Conventional pediatric assessment of risk factors for behavioral problems relies largely on single-biomarker analysis, which fails to capture the synergistic or antagonistic interactions among nutritional and metabolic factors and is further hampered by multicollinearity among biomarkers. Whether integrated nutritional-metabolic patterns improve risk identification beyond individual biomarkers remains unclear. We therefore combined multivariable regression, explainable machine learning, and principal component analysis (PCA)

Problem Gambling and Sexual Minority Individuals: Evaluating Influence of Age and Comorbid Mental Health and Substance Use Problems.

Little is known about the prevalence of problem gambling among sexual minority individuals. The present study utilized an epidemiological sample, including individuals identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, and pansexual, to explore gambling behavior and problems and associated mental health and comorbid conditions that may contribute to elevated risk. Bivariate comparisons found that sexual minority individuals had higher rates of problem gambling, alcohol and substance use problems, anxiety, depression, and a wide range of problem behaviors (e.g., binge eating, prostitution, excessi…

Women with bulimic eating disorders: When do they receive treatment for an eating problem?

Variables associated with the use of health services were examined in a prospective, community-based study of women with bulimic-type eating disorders who did (n = 33) or did not (n = 58) receive treatment for an eating problem during a 12-month follow-up period. Participants who received treatment for an eating problem differed from those who did not in several respects, including higher body weight, higher levels of eating disorder psychopathology, general psychological distress, and impairment in role functioning, deficits in specific aspects of coping style, greater awareness of an eating

Assessment of problem gambling in a Chinese context: the Chinese G-MAP.

There is a severe lack of instruments to assess problem gambling in Chinese people. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of the Maroondah Assessment Profile for Problem Gambling (Chinese G-MAP), based on the responses of eight problem gamblers and 125 pathological gamblers seeking help from a problem gambling treatment center. Reliability analyses showed that the G-MAP and its related domains and scales were generally internally consistent. There are also several lines of evidence suggesting that the Chinese G-MAP and the various domains are valid: (a) the var

Interparental conflict, parent psychopathology, hostile parenting, and child antisocial behavior: examining the role of maternal versus paternal influences using a novel genetically sensitive research design.

Past research has linked interparental conflict, parent psychopathology, hostile parenting, and externalizing behavior problems in childhood. However, few studies have examined these relationships while simultaneously allowing the contribution of common genetic factors underlying associations between family- and parent-level variables on child psychopathology to be controlled. Using the attributes of a genetically sensitive in vitro fertilization research design, the present study examined associations among interparental conflict, parents' antisocial behavior problems, parents' anxiety sympto

Self-perception of gambling problems among adolescents identified as at-risk or problem gamblers.

The relative influence of perceived familial addictive behaviors and personal gambling behaviors on adolescents' self-perceptions of gambling problems was examined. Students from five high schools in Connecticut (N = 3,886) were surveyed. Of those between the ages of 14 and 17 who scored two or more on the South Oaks Gambling Screen--Revised for Adolescents (n = 532; 72% male; 43% Caucasian), 14.3% reported having a current or past problem with gambling. Wagering larger amounts in a single day, gambling on a daily basis, and perceived presence of a family member with a gambling problem were as

Family caregivers' abusive behaviour and its association with internalized stigma of people living with schizophrenia in China.

Family caregiving of people living with schizophrenia (PLS) can be burdensome, and some family caregivers may perpetrate abusive behavior that could be harmful to PLS. This study aims to examine the association of family caregivers' abusive behavior with internalized stigma of PLS and draw attention to this problem. PLS were recruited from four cities across China and completed measures of abusive behavior and internalized stigma. Linear regression analyses were used to determine the association between family caregivers' abusive behavior and internalized stigma of PLS. A total of 693 PLS were

Sexual behavior that is "out of control": a theoretical conceptual approach.

At this stage of our knowledge, it seems reasonable to assume that out-of-control sexual behavior results from a variety of etiological mechanisms associated with different behavioral patterns that share Goodman's two key features of addictive behavior: (1) a recurrent failure to control the sexual behavior; and (2) continuation of the behavior despite harmful consequences. Any overriding definition relevant to clinical management seems premature until we better understand the various patterns and their likely determinants. The concepts of "compulsivity" and "addiction" may have explanatory va

The longitudinal impact of individual and parental emotional factors and individual behavioral factors on weight and disordered eating: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Emotional and behavioral problems during childhood and adolescence play a significant role in the development of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) and weight problems later in life. Understanding these trajectories is essential for early prevention and intervention efforts. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to map the existing literature on how individual and parental emotional factors, as well as individual behavioral factors, influence the development of weight problems and DEBs over time in children, adolescents and young adults. METHODS: This scoping review encompasses longitudinal, fo

It Takes Two to Regulate: Neural and Behavioral Synchrony Relate to Child Externalizing and Internalizing Profiles.

Parent-child interactions contribute to children's behavioral development and may buffer against psychopathology. Less is known about behavioral and neural alignment's association to development. Therefore, we examined behavioral and neural synchrony's relation to child behavioral problems. Parent-child behavioral synchrony was measured by Mutually Responsive Orientation coding, capturing coordinated routines, mutual cooperation, emotional ambiance, and harmonious communication. Functional near-infrared spectroscopy hyperscanning was used to measure parent-child neural synchrony in the temporo
