The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of Coxiella burnetti infection in wild Korean water deer (Hydropotes inermis argyropus) in Korea, by using serology and real-time PCR analyses. One hundred ninety-six sera were collected from 4 provinces and tested for anti-C. burnetii antibody detection, by means of CHEKIT Q fever ELISA kit; and C. burnetii IS1111 insertion sequence detection, by means of real-time PCR. In remote countries, leptospirosis confirmation is difficult because it requires the shipment of frozen samples to reference laboratories. The sensitivity of leptospirosis real-time PCR performed on filter paper-dried serum samples stored at ambient temperature was evaluated at 2 × 10(2) equivalent leptospires/ml (eqLeptospires/ml). This easy alternative procedure can be used to enhance the surveillance of leptospirosis.

Real-time PCR (qPCR) was positive in 72/150 (48%) blood samples of newborns with congenital toxoplasmosis. Among infants with active retinochoroiditis, 68% had positive qPCR results, while positivity was 29% (P=0.009) in the absence of ocular involvement. Hand, foot and mouth disease most commonly occurs in children less than 10 years old, but can occur in immunocompetent adults. We describe a 37-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with multiple painful papules and vesicles on his palms and feet together with vesicles inside the mouth. Real-time polymerase chain reaction revealed Coxsackievirus A6 in the vesicle fluid from the feet, throat swab, and rectal swab. Since the disease is highly contagious, to contain the infection it is prudent to recognise that hand, foot and mouth disease can occur in immunocompetent adults.

For a survey of Coxiella burnetii, the Q fever agent, ticks infesting companion dogs were collected in Aomori, Tochigi, Gifu and Okinawa Prefectures, Japan. A total of 261 ticks were collected, and their species were identified morphologically. Five tick species were identified: Ixodes ovatus, Haemaphysalis concinna, H. flava, H. longicornis and Rhipicephalus sanguineus. Recent evidence of the occurrence of atypical Chlamydiaceae strains in pigeons, different from the established Chlamydiaceae, requires the development of a specific and rapid detection tool to investigate their prevalence and significance. Direct extraction of Cryptosporidium DNA from 46 stools by bead-beating, guanidine thiocyanate and silica purification provided slightly lower PCR positivity (93.5% vs. 100%) and higher threshold cycle values (mean 34.93 vs. 28.03; P=0.00) than spin-column extraction from boiled, semi-purified oocyst suspensions. BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in western China, and becoming an important public health concern. Infected dogs are the main reservoir for Leishmania infantum, and a potential sentinel for human VL in endemic areas. In the present study we investigated the prevalence of Leishmania DNA in dogs from Wenchuan, Heishui and Jiuzhaigou County in Sichuan Province, southwestern China, which are important endemic areas of zoonotic VL, detected by real time PCR. Leishmania (L.) amazonensis uses arginine to synthesize polyamines to support its growth and survival.
