Depressive symptoms, ruminative thinking, marijuana use motives, and marijuana outcomes: A multiple mediation model among college students in five countries.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have evidenced that rumination and drinking motives may mediate the association between depressive symptoms and alcohol outcomes. The present study cross-culturally examined whether a similar mediation model may extend to marijuana. Specifically, we tested distinct rumination facets (problem-focused thoughts, counterfactual thinking, repetitive thoughts, and anticipatory thoughts) and marijuana use motives (social, coping, expansion, conformity, enhancement) as double-mediators of the paths from depressive symptoms to marijuana outcomes (use and consequences). MET

The role of rumination in the guilt associated with bereavement according to cause of death.

The purpose of this study was to analyse the role rumination plays in the relationship between cause of death and the guilt present during bereavement. The sample consisted of 90 people that had suffered a loss due to an expected or unexpected natural death, suicide or accident. The results suggest that rumination increases the levels of guilt felt by people that had suffered a loss due to suicide compared to those whose loss was due to an expected natural death. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms with an influence on bereavement.

Reward learning impairment and avoidance and rumination responses at the end of Engage therapy of late-life depression.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between reward processing, as measured by performance on the probabilistic reversal learning (PRL) task and avoidance/rumination in depressed older adults treated with Engage, a psychotherapy that uses "reward exposure" to increase behavioral activation. METHODS: Thirty older adults with major depression received 9 weeks of Engage treatment. At baseline and treatment end, the 24-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAM-D) was used to assess depression severity and the Behavioral Activation for Depression Scale (BADS) to assess behavioral activ

The Role of Rumination in Elevating Perceived Stress in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

Rumination has been shown to be important in both the maintenance and severity of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). Increased rumination has also been linked to perceptions of increased stress, which in turn are significantly associated with increased PTSD severity. The present study sought to examine this relationship in more detail by means of a mediation analysis. Forty-nine female survivors of interpersonal violence who met Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed., text rev.; DSM-IV-TR) criteria for PTSD were administered the Cl

Electroencephalographic findings in patients with major depressive disorder during cognitive or emotional tasks: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE:: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent psychiatric condition characterized by multiple symptoms that cause great distress. Uncovering the brain areas involved in MDD is essential for improving therapeutic strategies and predicting response to interventions. This systematic review discusses recent findings regarding cortical alterations in depressed patients during emotional or cognitive tasks, as measured by electroencephalography (EEG). METHODS:: A search of the MEDLINE/PubMed and Cochrane databases was carried out using the keywords EEG and depression, confined to articl

Impulsivity Is Related to Prescription Opioid Misuse in People With Chronic Pain Through Pain Catastrophizing and Emotional Distress.

Background: This study investigated the role of impulsivity as a personality variable predisposing to prescription opioid misuse. Pain catastrophizing, as well as anxiety, depression, and pain intensity, were postulated as potential serial mediators in this relationship. Methods: The sample comprised 366 individuals with chronic pain. We conducted correlational and serial mediation analyses to investigate the relationships between the study variables. Results: The results showed that pain catastrophizing partially mediated the relationship between impulsivity and prescription opioid misuse. De

Feasibility and preliminary efficacy of guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia after the loss of a child to cancer: Randomized controlled trial.

Bereaved individuals often experience sleep problems. The aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility and preliminary effects of internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (iCBT-i) in bereaved parents. Parents were randomized to iCBT-i (n = 10) or an active control group (n = 11). Primary outcome (insomnia) and secondary outcomes (prolonged grief, depression, posttraumatic stress, and grief rumination) were assessed pre- and post-treatment, with 9- and 18-month follow-ups. Feasibility was assessed post-treatment and one month later. Most parents reported positive effects of

Working memory interacts with emotion regulation to predict symptoms of mania.

Although neurocognitive deficits and emotion regulation are closely linked within unipolar depression, little research has tested links between these two variables within bipolar disorder. The present study tested whether working memory is related to individual differences in emotion regulation strategies in bipolar disorder and whether working memory and emotion regulation can explain variability in symptoms over time. Fifty-nine euthymic adults with bipolar I disorder completed a working memory span task, symptom interviews assessing depression and mania, and questionnaires assessing broodin

Connecting the Dots between Schizotypal Symptoms and Social Anxiety in Youth with an Extra X Chromosome: A Mediating Role for Catastrophizing.

Youth with an extra X chromosome (47, XXY & 47, XXX) display higher levels of schizotypal symptoms and social anxiety as compared to typically developing youth. It is likely that the extra X chromosome group is at-risk for clinical levels of schizotypy and social anxiety. Hence, this study investigated how schizotypal and social anxiety symptoms are related and mechanisms that may explain their association in a group of 38 children and adolescents with an extra X chromosome and a comparison group of 109 typically developing peers (8-19 years). Three cognitive coping strategies were investi

Are worry, rumination, and post-event processing one and the same? Development of the repetitive thinking questionnaire.

Accumulating evidence suggests that repetitive negative thinking (RNT) is a transdiagnostic phenomenon. However, various forms of RNT such as worry, rumination, and post-event processing have been assessed using separate measures and have almost exclusively been examined within the anxiety, depression, and social phobia literatures, respectively. A single transdiagnostic measure of RNT would facilitate the identification of transdiagnostic maintaining factors of RNT, and would be more efficient than administering separate measures for each disorder. Items from three existing measures of RNT we

Lower metacognitive abilities predict procrastination: a cross-sectional study of a healthy adult sample.

BACKGROUND: Procrastination, the tendency to delay tasks despite negative consequences, is a widespread issue linked to poor mental health and reduced daily functioning. While often attributed to self-regulation failures, the specific cognitive mechanisms underlying procrastination remain unclear. This study investigates the role of executive functions (EF), measured through both self-report and performance-based tests, in predicting procrastination in adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 108 adults (22–65 years) using the Irrational Procrastination Scale (IPS) to measur

Predicting DSM-5 PTSD symptomatology 6 months to 2 years after burn: The role of early psychological risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Major burn injuries may have long-term mental health consequences, such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This study extended prior work to investigate DSM-5 PTSD symptoms at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years post-burn as well as the contribution of two sets of early psychological risk factors to DSM-5 PTSD symptoms: Established PTSD risk factors (prior adjustment problems, past trauma, perception of life threat, peritraumatic emotions and dissociation) and theory-derived cognitive factors (negative appraisals of the trauma and its sequelae, memory disorganization, trauma-relate

Group Psychoeducation to Improve Cognitive Emotion Regulation in Nigerian Women with Breast Cancer.

Breast cancer is a life-altering stressor requiring patients to use a variety of psychosocial strategies to cope. Patients employing maladaptive cognitive coping strategies are likely to experience detrimental effects in their lives. Studies of group psychoeducation (GPE) interventions and its effects on positive and negative cognitive emotion regulation are scarce, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Nigeria. The present study investigated the effect of  eight weeks of a GPE intervention on cognitive emotion regulation (CER) among a single group of Nigerian women wi

Psychological Treatment of Low Sexual Desire in Women: Protocol for a Randomized, Waitlist-Controlled Trial of Internet-Based Cognitive Behavioral and Mindfulness-Based Treatments.

BACKGROUND: Psychological therapies are effective treatments for hypoactive sexual desire dysfunction (HSDD; formerly hypoactive sexual desire disorder), a common sexual dysfunction among women. Access to evidence-based treatments, however, remains difficult. Internet-based interventions are effective for a variety of psychological disorders and may be a promising means to close the treatment gap for HSDD. OBJECTIVE: This article describes the treatment protocol and study design of a randomized controlled trial, aiming to study the efficacy of cognitive behavioral and mindfulness-based interv

Mindfulness starts with the body: somatosensory attention and top-down modulation of cortical alpha rhythms in mindfulness meditation.

Using a common set of mindfulness exercises, mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) have been shown to reduce distress in chronic pain and decrease risk of depression relapse. These standardized mindfulness (ST-Mindfulness) practices predominantly require attending to breath and body sensations. Here, we offer a novel view of ST-Mindfulness's somatic focus as a form of training for optimizing attentional modulation of 7-14 Hz alpha rhythms that play a key role in filtering inputs to primary sensory neocortex and organizing the flow of sensory i

"Prideful Apathy": A Phenomenological-Psychopathological Study of Emotion Engagement and Regulation Tasks.

Background/Objectives: Emotion dysregulation is central to many psychiatric disorders. Laboratory-based tasks designed to assess emotion processing and regulation often rely on standardized affective stimuli whose ecological validity remains unclear. We contextualize this study in our broader research program of neurophenomenological reflection of standard paradigms in experimental cognitive psychology. Methods: This study investigates the lived experience of 27 patients with affective disorders as they performed a cognitive-affective task combining working memory demands with exposure to nega

Sleep hygiene and sleep control mediate the relationship between cognitive fusion and insomnia severity.

OBJECTIVES: Insomnia is associated with mental ill health, worry and rumination-the two latter contribute to pre-sleep cognitive arousal. These variables also associate with psychological inflexibility, including cognitive fusion (CF), a literal attachment to unhelpful thoughts, patterns and rules. Good sleepers generally have low CF, good sleep hygiene and a belief in sleep control, but individuals high in CF may have unhelpful beliefs about sleep hygiene and sleep control. METHODS: We investigated associations between CF, sleep hygiene and sleep control, hypothesizing that each would contri

Psychometric validation of an ultra-short form test anxiety inventory: initial step towards a brief screening measure.

BACKGROUND: Test anxiety affects up to 40% of university students and is associated with academic failure, depression and suicidal ideation, yet clinical screening and high-frequency research designs remain hampered by the burden of 20-item instruments such as the Test Anxiety Inventory (TAI). Although brief measures exist (e.g. the ten-item Westside Test Anxiety Scale and the five-item TAI), a validated, gender-invariant hierarchy of ultra-short forms tailored to contemporary undergraduates is lacking. AIMS: To develop and validate a hierarchy of brief TAI versions (ten-item Short Form, five
