Spinal accessory nerve palsy following gunshot injury: a case report.

Injuries to the spinal accessory nerve are rare and mostly iatrogenic. Pain, impaired ability to raise the ipsilateral shoulder, and scapular winging on abduction of the arm are the most frequently noted clinical manifestations. As a seldom case, a 20 year-old male with spinal accessory nerve palsy after penetrating trauma by gunshot was reported. Three months after the injury, he was complaining about left arm pain in abduction to shoulder level and a decreased range of movement. On physical examination, wasting of the left trapezium with loss of nuchal ridge and drooping of the shoulder were

Surgical treatment of winged scapula.

Injuries to the long thoracic and spinal accessory nerves present challenges in diagnosis and treatment. Palsies of the serratus anterior and trapezius muscles lead to destabilization of the scapula with medial and lateral scapular winging, respectively. Although nonoperative treatment is successful in some patients, failures have led to the evolution of surgical techniques involving various combinations of fascial graft and/or transfer of adjacent muscles. Our preferred method of reconstruction for serratus anterior palsy is a two-incision, split pectoralis major transfer without fascial graf

Immobilisation following traumatic anterior glenohumeral joint dislocation: a literature review.

Traumatic anterior dislocations of the shoulder are common and disabling injuries, in young and old alike. For centuries, the means of managing this injury has been to immobilise the affected shoulder after reduction, for up to 8 weeks, in an adducted and internally rotated position. The aim of this literature review is to assess whether traumatic anterior shoulder dislocations should be immobilised; for how long should they be immobilised; and whether the position of immobilisation affects outcomes. An electronic literature search was performed of the databases AMED, Cinahl, Embase, Medline (

Maternal body mass index, maneuvers, and neonatal morbidity associated with shoulder dystocia.

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dystocia is associated with neonatal morbidity. Higher maternal prepregnancy body mass index is an established risk factor for shoulder dystocia, yet the relationship between maternal prepregnancy body mass index and resulting neonatal morbidity after shoulder dystocia is not well-studied. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the association between body mass index and neonatal adverse outcomes following shoulder dystocia. The frequency and type of maneuvers used to resolve shoulder dystocia by maternal body mass index was compared. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort st

The Rehabilitation Journey of a Cricket Player With Partial Rotator Cuff Tear: A Case Report of Pre and Postoperative Physiotherapy.

In adults, partial rotator cuff injuries can frequently be the root cause of pain in the shoulder. One recurrent pathology that may significantly impact a broad spectrum of individuals, including athletes, laborers, and sedentary people, is partial rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Physical therapy, anti-inflammatories, painkillers, rest or activity modifications, and corticosteroid injections are a few nonoperative treatment options for partial RCTs. We report a case of a 27-year-old male who sustained a rotator cuff injury of the right shoulder. The patient presented with pain and restriction of th

The Relationship Between Dynamic Balance Ability and Shoulder Pain in High School Baseball Pitchers.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic balance is essential for pitching motion because pitching kinematics requires whole body coordination. The Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) and the Y balance test (YBT) evaluate dynamic balance quantitatively. There are some reports that investigated the relationship between SEBT/YBT and pain in upper and lower extremities, but there is no study among high school baseball pitchers. HYPOTHESIS: Dynamic balance deficiency is associated with shoulder pain among high school baseball pitchers. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level 4. METHODS: A tota

Simultaneous bilateral anterior shoulder dislocation as a result of minimal trauma.

Simultaneous bilateral anterior shoulder dislocation is rare, it often occurs after high energy trauma, we report a case of a 43-years-old male presented with bilateral anterior shoulder dislocation when he tries to stand up from the floor, shoulders in extension, abduction and external rotation. A closed reduction was performed without complications, and one month later the right shoulder was stabilized by open Laterjet technique. The evolution was favorable for both shoulders with no pain, recuperation of the range motion and no recurrence of dislocation. Through this case we underline the v

A vast majority of preliminary reports published in the shoulder literature are not followed by long-time follow-up studies - a literature review.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of paper is to check how many preliminary reports (PR) reach a long-term publication (LT), and analyse differences in outcomes and complications between them. METHODS: A literature search was performed to identify shoulder preliminary or early reports. Fifty one papers fulfilled criteria and were categorized for paper topic. Bibliographic searches were undertaken to find LT on the topic from the same author or research group. Outcomes and complications reported in PR were recorded and compared to those reported in LT. RESULTS: Ten out of 51 PR (19.61 %) were followed by

Anterior shoulder instability: histomorphometric study of the subscapularis and deltoid muscles.

Recurrent traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation results in soft tissues lesions around the glenohumeral joint. The subscapularis muscle is a major active stabilizer of the shoulder and the hypothesis of the current study is that one would expect pathologic changes within its substance secondary to the trauma. A histomorphometric study of the subscapularis muscle was done of 52 patients operated on for recurrent traumatic anterior shoulder dislocation. At the time of surgery biopsy specimens were taken of the subscapularis muscle and the ipsilateral deltoid muscle as a comparison and to see i

Trends in Upper Extremity Saw Injuries From 2003 to 2022.

BACKGROUND: Saws are a common source of upper extremity injury. There have been several commercial and government-mandated safety mechanisms designed to reduce the number of saw injuries. We aim to assess the trends in the incidence and impact of saw-related upper extremity injuries over the last 2 decades. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System database was queried from January 2003 to December 2022 for upper extremity injuries caused by saws. Summary statistics for primary body part injured and diagnosis were calculated. Linear regression was performed to evaluate trend

Inconsistencies and Imprecision in the Nomenclature Used to Describe Primary Periphyseal Stress Injuries: Towards a Better Understanding.

Stress injuries involving the epiphyseal-physeal-metaphyseal complex affecting the extremities of child and adolescent athletes were first described in the early 1950s. Initially observed in Little League baseball players, these injuries are now known to affect skeletally immature athletes in a variety of sports that involve high-impact repetitive overuse activities. Collectively known as primary periphyseal stress injuries, they may affect the long bones around the shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot of young athletes. These injuries respond well to timely treatment and r
