Neural envelope tracking as a measure of speech understanding in cochlear implant users.

The speech envelope is essential for speech understanding and can be reconstructed from the electroencephalogram (EEG) recorded while listening to running speech. This so-called "neural envelope tracking" has been shown to relate to speech understanding in normal hearing listeners, but has barely been investigated in persons wearing cochlear implants (CI). We investigated the relation between speech understanding and neural envelope tracking in CI users. EEG was recorded in 8 CI users while they listened to a story. Speech understanding was varied by changing the intensity of the presented spe

SPEAK-SAFE: secure processing of electronic audio for knowledge in suicide assessment from therapeutic exchanges.

BACKGROUND: For therapists, the spoken word of their patients is among the most important foundations for clinical assessment. At the same time, it is hardly possible to monitor patients continuously and closely in sufficient numbers, for example, to ongoingly assess the risk of suicide in therapeutical conversations. Natural Language Processing (NLP) involves the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to analyze human language. Combining it with AI speech processing methods, we obtain multimodal methods which can automatically process large volumes of speech and language data to extract diagnost

Exploring short-term memory and listening effort in two-talker conversations: The influence of soft and moderate background noise.

Listening to conversations and remembering their content is a highly demanding task, especially in noisy environments. Previous research has mainly focused on short-term memory using simple cognitive tasks with unrelated words or digits. The present study investigates the listeners' short-term memory and listening effort in conversations under different listening conditions, with and without soft or moderate noise. To this end, participants were administered a dual-task paradigm, including a primary listening task, in which conversations between two talkers were presented, and an unrelated sec

Neurobiology of cognitive abilities in early childhood autism.

This perspective considers complexities in the relationship between impaired cognitive abilities and autism from a maturational, developmental perspective, and aims to serve as a helpful guide for the complex and growing investigation of cognitive abilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Low Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and ASD are frequently co-occurring. About 37% of 8-year old children and 48% of 4-year old children diagnosed with ASD also have Intellectual Disability, with IQ below 70. And, low IQ in early infancy, including below 1 year of age, carries a 40% greater chance of receiving

Towards Evaluating Pitch-Related Phonation Function in Speech Communication Using High-Density Surface Electromyography.

Pitch, as a sensation of the sound frequency, is a crucial attribute toward constructing a natural voice for communication. Producing intelligible sounds with normal pitches depend on substantive interdependencies among facial and neck muscles. Clarifying the interrelations between the pitches and the corresponding muscular activities would be helpful for evaluating the pitch-related phonating functions, which would play a significant role both in training pronunciation and in assessing dysphonia. In this study, the speech signals and the high-density surface electromyography (HD sEMG) signals

[Early detection of primary developmental language disorders-increasing relevance due to changes in diagnostic criteria?].

Language development disorders (in German: Sprachentwicklungsstörungen, SES) are the most common developmental disorders in childhood. In contrast to "secondary SES," "primary SES" (prevalence about 7%) are not (co-)caused by other developmental disorders or diseases. In the German modification of the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-10-GM-22), primary SES are referred to as "circumscribed developmental disorders of speech and language" (in German: USES; international previously known as Specific Language Impairment SLI), with an intelligenc

Versatility and Reliability of Islanded Pedicled Nasolabial Flap in Head and Neck Cancer Reconstruction.

OBJECTIVES: Reconstruction of head and neck cancer ablative defects is challenging. A modification of the nasolabial flap (islanded pedicled nasolabial flap [ipNLF]) is an easy and reliable option for reconstruction of small- to medium-sized defects of the head and neck, especially in resource-constrained and high-volume centers. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We present the retrospective analysis of 27 consecutive patients reconstructed with ipNLF at two high-volume cancer centers, Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital, Varanasi, India; and Army Hospital Research and Referral, New Delhi, India. The functio

Larynx-preserving reconstruction after extended base of the tongue resection.

BACKGROUND: As the base of the tongue (BOT) plays essential roles in speech and swallowing, surgical resection of BOT cancer is typically avoided. Moreover, standard reconstructive procedures for larynx-preserving BOT defects have not yet been established. We performed immediate flap reconstruction after wide resection of BOT cancer with laryngeal preservation. Herein, the functional and oncological results of our strategy were analysed. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent extended BOT resection (including the oral tongue, upper/lateral oropharyngeal wall, epiglottis

The spectrum of acquired cognitive disturbances in children with partial epilepsy and continuous spike-waves during sleep. A 4-year follow-up case study with prolonged reversible learning arrest and dysfluency.

We report a longitudinal study (7-11 years) of a previously normal boy (MR) who presented from the age of 5 years with rare partial motor seizures and atypical 'absences'. The history revealed a stagnation in development and speech difficulties a few months before onset of his epilepsy. The first waking electroencephalogram (EEG) showed rare generalized discharges during hyperventilation. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed an arachnoid cyst in the frontotemporal region. Although his epilepsy never became severe, he experienced important learning difficulties. Subsequent EEGs became increasing

Auditory-cognitive interactions underlying interaural asymmetry in an adult listener: a case study.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal interaural asymmetry on tests of dichotic listening is commonly observed in individuals suspected of auditory processing disorder (APD). Although a structural basis for the abnormality has been widely accepted, the influence of cognitive variables on the degree of observed asymmetry has gained increasing attention. To study this issue, we manipulated cognitive influences on interaural asymmetry in an adult with the auditory complaints typically associated with APD. STUDY SAMPLE: A 55 year-old woman with complaints of difficulty understanding speech in noisy environments de
