Radioiodine uptake in the head and neck.

OBJECTIVE: To report two cases of sinusitis-associated radioiodine uptake in patients with thyroid cancer and to review the reported causes of false-positive radioiodine uptake in the head and neck area. METHODS: We present the radiologic findings in two patients who had undergone treatment for papillary thyroid cancer and discuss other settings in which radioiodine uptake suggested the presence of metastatic disease. RESULTS: Radioiodine whole-body scans of two patients who had had thyroid cancer demonstrated uptake in the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses, respectively, mimicking bone or brai

Multidisciplinary treatment strategy optimization and long-term prognosis in spheno-orbital meningiomas: a multicenter retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Spheno-orbital meningiomas which includes en plaque sphenoid wing meningiomas are rare skull base tumors. Current treatment approaches include neurosurgical resection, stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), observational follow-up, and combined modalities such as maximal safe resection with adjuvant radiotherapy/radiosurgery. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to systematically evaluate the efficacy of multidisciplinary treatment strategies, compare visual preservation and tumor control rates among different therapeutic modalities, and emphasize combined treatment paradigms for invasi

Biportal Endoscopic TransOrbital and transMaxillary Approach to the Cranio-Orbital Region and Middle Cranial Fossa: A Preliminary Analysis of Maneuverability.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Traditional and well-established transcranial approaches to the spheno-orbital region and middle cranial fossa guarantee optimal intracranial exposure, and additional orbital and zygomatic osteotomies provide further control over extracranial components to be resected; however, these techniques come at the cost of additional morbidity. The introduction of minimally invasive endoscopic approaches and the conceptualization of the so-called "multiportal" paradigm might provide an alternative route. This preliminary study investigates the feasibility of the combined Bipo

Chronic Invasive Fungal Sinusitis Mimicking Malignancy Post-Radiotherapy: A Case Report.

Invasive fungal sinusitis is a life-threatening form of fungal rhinosinusitis. Due to the aggressive clinical presentation and radiological appearance, there is diagnostic difficulty in differentiating invasive fungal sinusitis from a malignant process. This is even more challenging in oncological patients who have undergone previous head and neck radiotherapy, due to possibility of a recurrence of primary malignancy and radiation-induced neoplasms. We report a rare case of invasive fungal sinusitis mimicking a malignancy in a post-radiotherapy patient. Our patient was a 68-year-old male, 25-y

New Approach for Endoscopic Endonasal Transsphenoidal Pituitary Surgery: Modified Nasoseptal Rescue Flap.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic endonasal approach has become popularly preferred for pituitary surgery in recent years. In this study we described a new technique which is developed by the first author and which is modified from The Rivera-Serrano "salvage" flap approach. With this new technique the septum morbidity was completely prevented and a wider and more comfortable vision was provided for the operation. MATERIALMETHOD: This study consists 7 patients who underwent endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery (EETPS) with the described technique (modified salvage flap technique) bet

The Analysis of Patients Operated for Frontal Sinus Osteomas.

OBJECTIVE: Paranasal sinus osteomas are benign tumors that are smooth-walled, slow-growing, and induced by bone tissue. Although their most common localization is the frontal sinus, some osteomas are seen in the ethmoid, maxillary, and sphenoid sinuses. Frontal sinus osteomas are often asymptomatic; however, when they become symptomatic, headache is the most common complaint. In this study, we aimed to analyze the postoperative results of patients who were diagnosed with frontal sinus osteoma and were operated with appropriate surgical techniques. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated 14 pati

Combined transmastoid middle fossa approach for giant cholesterol granuloma of the petrous apex: technique for "dual exhaust" drainage.

Cholesterol granulomas are cystic lesions that typically arise in the petrous apex as a result of an inflammatory giant-cell reaction to cholesterol crystal deposits that are formed when normal aeration and drainage of temporal bone air cells become occluded resulting in transudation of blood into the petrous air cells. Surgical strategies include simple cyst decompression, radical excision of the cyst wall, or fenestration and drainage with silastic tubing. The authors present a giant cholesterol granuloma compressing the cerebellopontine angle and brainstem in a 35 year-old male who presente

Evaluation of CSF leaks: high-resolution CT compared with contrast-enhanced CT and radionuclide cisternography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Radiologic evaluation of CSF leaks is a diagnostic challenge that often involves multiple imaging studies with the associated expense and patient discomfort. We evaluated the use of screening noncontrast high-resolution CT in identifying the presence and site of CSF rhinorrhea and otorrhea and compared it with contrast-enhanced CT cisternography and radionuclide cisternography. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the imaging studies and medical records of all patients who were evaluated for CSF leak during a 7-year period. Forty-two patients with rhinorrhea and/or oto

RIGHT AORTIC ARCH ASSOCIATED WITH AGENESIS OF THE LEFT INTERNAL CAROTID ARTERY - AN EXTREMELY RARE CASE REPORT.

INTRODUCTION: A right aortic arch and agenesis of internal carotid artery (ICA) are both extremely rare vascular devel- opment anomalies. Etiology of the both anomalies might be associated with the abnormal regression of the dorsal aorta. Most cases of ICA are asymptomatic due to sufficient collateral circulation and it is usually an incident finding on head and neck imaging by color Doppler ultrasonography, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). ICA agenesis has a significant association - 24-67% - with intracranial aneurysms and their early detection can spare the pati

Nasal sinuses cholesteatoma: case series and review of the English literature.

BACKGROUND: Nasal sinus cholesteatomas are uncommon slow-growing lesions that are frequently misdiagnosed preoperatively. They can develop due to embryologic remnants or iatrogenic factors (surgical trauma or nasal sinus trauma). In addition, they can cause bone destruction resulting in intracranial or intraorbital complications as well as malignant change if neglected. Complete surgical removal is a must with strict postoperative follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three cases of nasal sinus cholesteatoma are reported. The first case was found inside the ethmoidal sinus, the second in the fron

Cranial Morphology of the Late Oligocene Patagonian Notohippid Rhynchippus equinus Ameghino, 1897 (Mammalia, Notoungulata) with Emphases in Basicranial and Auditory Region.

"Notohippidae" is a probably paraphyletic family of medium sized notoungulates with complete dentition and early tendency to hypsodonty. They have been recorded from early Eocene to early Miocene, being particularly diverse by the late Oligocene. Although Rhynchippus equinus Ameghino is one of the most frequent notohippids in the fossil record, there are scarce data about cranial osteology other than the classical descriptions which date back to the early last century. In this context, we describe the exceptionally preserved specimen MPEF PV 695 (based on CT scanning technique and 3D reconstru

Endoscopic anatomy for transnasal transsphenoidal pituitary surgery in the presence of a persistent trigeminal artery.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic procedures are becoming increasingly important for transnasal transsphenoidal approaches to the skull base and particularly for pituitary surgery. A persistent trigeminal artery (PTA) is rare. Its presence, if it goes unnoticed or if the surgeon is not aware of such a variant, may endanger the success of surgery. METHOD: During an endoscopic inspection using a supraorbital approach in a fresh cadaveric specimen in which the arteries had been injected with latex glue, the presence of an anomalous intracranial artery, suggestive for PTA, was disclosed. The specimen was the

Predictors of diplopia following orbital fractures based on anatomical location, a retrospective cohort study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify predictors of diplopia following orbital fractures. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed clinical and imaging data from 155 patients who experienced orbital fractures at our center between 2021 and 2023. Orbital fracture sites were classified as C/S/A according to imaging: the lacrimal bone was named as A1, the bony structure behind lamina papyracea as A2 and the lateral wall of the orbit (including the zygomatic bone and the greater wing of sphenoid) was appointed as A3 in the axial view; the orbital floor was divided into three equal parts as S1-S3 in t
