Lesion distribution pattern of parenchymal Neuro-Behçet's disease using probability mapping.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Behçet's disease (BD) is an inflammatory disorder with multisystemic involvement. The most disabling aspect of BD is Neuro-Behçet's disease (NBD). In NBD, parenchymal lesions tend to occur in the mesodiencephalic region and brainstem, as reported in large series of NBD. Our study aimed to generate probability maps of parenchymal lesions to compare patient subgroups with different clinical and laboratory features. METHOD: We included 66 non-standardized acute relapse MRIs of 55 patients with parenchymal NBD (p-NBD). We used T2-weighted axial images to digitalize the les

Complications following cervical epidural steroid injections by expert interventionalists in 2003.

BACKGROUND: Two major portals are available for delivery of medication into the cervical epidural space: interlaminar and transforaminal. The choice of which approach to use is commonly made by assessing the patient's structural pathology, one's skill in performing each procedure, and then weighing the advantages versus the risk associated with the particular technique. Over the past several years, a growing number of cases involving serious complications following cervical transforaminal epidural steroid injections have led some to question the safety of the procedure and to preferentially pe

The angiosomes of the head and neck: anatomic study and clinical applications.

The angiosome concept was introduced over a decade ago by Taylor and Palmer, whereby the body was considered to be composed anatomically of … ingly removed, photographed, labeled, and mapped to the respective arteries and veins. A radiologic subtraction technique was used to allow successive layers to be compared. This information was then scanned into a computer, analyzed, color coded, and labeled, thereby producing a three-dimensional study of the head and neck region to identify the respective angiosomes. …

Image processing based automatic diagnosis of glaucoma using wavelet features of segmented optic disc from fundus image.

Glaucoma is a disease of the retina which is one of the most common causes of permanent blindness worldwide. This paper presents an automatic image processing based method for glaucoma diagnosis from the digital fundus image. In this paper wavelet feature extraction has been followed by optimized genetic feature selection combined with several learning algorithms and various parameter settings. Unlike the existing research works where the features are considered from the complete fundus or a sub image of the fundus, this work is based on feature extraction from the segmented and blood vessel r

Automatic carotid artery distensibility measurements from CTA using nonrigid registration.

The distensibility of a blood vessel is a marker of atherosclerotic disease. In this paper we investigate the feasibility of measuring carotid artery distensibility on 4D CTA, both manually and using a new automatic method. On 4D CTA datasets manual (n=38) and automatic (n=76) measurements of the carotid distensibility were performed. A subset (n=10) of the manual annotations were repeated by a second observer. The interobserver variability was assessed using a Bland-Altman analysis and appeared to be too large to reliably measure the distensibility using manual annotation. We compared two ver

Automated skeleton based multi-modal deformable registration of head&neck datasets.

This paper presents a novel skeleton based method for the registration of head&neck datasets. Unlike existing approaches it is fully automated, spatial relation of the bones is considered during their registration and only one of the images must be a CT scan. An articulated atlas is used to jointly obtain a segmentation of the skull, the mandible and the vertebrae C1-Th2 from the CT image. These bones are then successively rigidly registered with the moving image, beginning at the skull, resulting in a rigid transformation for each of the bones. Linear combinations of those transformations des

Beware of the focal uptake at the ischium on the bone scan in prostate cancer.

RATIONALE: The isotope bone scan is routinely used in the management of prostate cancer as the skeleton is the second most common area of metastasis after lymph nodes. A classic site of involvement in the pelvis is the ischium, and the aim of this study was to assess the value of single-photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) imaging in patients with focal ischial uptake on the planar scan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective study of consecutive 150 patients with prostate cancer who were referred for a whole-body bone scan between August 2007 and 2008.

Assessment of synovitis in the osteoarthritic knee: Comparison between manual segmentation, semiautomated segmentation, and semiquantitative assessment using contrast-enhanced fat-suppressed T1-weighted MRI.

Osteoarthritic joints regularly exhibit synovitis, which is ideally assessed on contrast-enhanced MRI. Manual segmentation is the reference standard for volumetric analysis but is labor intensive. The aim was to evaluate alternative semiautomated approaches of targeted thresholding and gaussian deconvolution. Volumetric and semiquantitative synovitis assessment was compared in addition. Thirty-two knees with osteoarthritis were scanned on a 1.5-T system. Synovitis volumes were plotted against each other and distributions fit with linear functions. The relationship between semiquantitative scor

Plac1 is a tumor-specific antigen capable of eliciting spontaneous antibody responses in human cancer patients.

Immunoselection and tumor evasion constitutes one of the major obstacles in cancer immunotherapy. A potential solution to this problem is the development of polyvalent vaccines, and the identification of more tumor-specific antigens is a prerequisite for the development of cancer vaccines. To identify novel tumor-specific antigens, suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) was performed to isolate genes differentially expressed in human hepatocellular cancer (HCC) tissues. PLAC1 (PLACenta-specific 1) was one of the genes identified highly expressed in HCC tissues but not in paired noncancero

A constrained non-rigid registration algorithm for use in prostate image-guided radiotherapy.

A constrained non-rigid registration (CNRR) algorithm for use in updating prostate external beam image-guided radiotherapy treatment plans is presented in this paper. The developed algorithm is based on a multi-resolution cubic B-spline FFD transformation and has been tested and verified using 3D CT images from 10 sets of real patient data acquired from 4 different patients on different treatment days. The registration can be constrained to any combination of the prostate, rectum, bladder, pelvis, left femur, and right femur. The CNRR was tested with 5 different combinations of constraints and

Multivariate normalization with symmetric diffeomorphisms for multivariate studies.

Current clinical and research neuroimaging protocols acquire images using multiple modalities, for instance, T1, T2, diffusion tensor and cerebral blood flow magnetic resonance images (MRI). These multivariate datasets provide unique and often complementary anatomical and physiological information about the subject of interest. We present a method that uses fused multiple modality (scalar and tensor) datasets to perform intersubject spatial normalization. Our multivariate approach has the potential to eliminate inconsistencies that occur when normalization is performed on each modality separat

False-positive axillary lymph node on FDG-PET/CT scan resulting from immunization.

An initial CT of a 59-year-old man with increasing back pain and weight loss showed lymphadenopathy in multiple nodal beds. A biopsy showed diffuse, large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL). After initial chemotherapy, residual disease prompted an autologous stem cell transplant. After a follow-up FDG-PET/CT scan showed no FDG-avid disease, a subsequent study showed FDG uptake in a nonenlarged left axillary lymph node. Questioning elicited a recent immunization history. A follow-up PET/CT scan showed no uptake in this lymph node and no disease recurrence. Without this history, an unnecessary biopsy or tr

Endocrine neoplasm scintigraphy: added value of fusing SPECT/CT images compared with traditional side-by-side analysis.

PURPOSE: Positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging integrates physiology and anatomy, providing a powerful dual-modality approach. Analogously, fusing independently acquired single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and CT images can overcome interpretive challenges in characterizing and localizing abnormalities by either modality alone, potentially enhancing diagnostic confidence. This study explores the added value of SPECT/CT image fusion compared with traditional "side-by-side" SPECT/CT image review for a variety of endocrine neoplasms. METHODS AND MATER

Isolation and characterization of a novel gene from human glioblastoma multiforme tumor tissue.

Using the technique of DD-PCR (differential display-polymerase chain reaction) we isolated a novel gene (D2-2) that is overexpressed in glioblastoma multiforme tissue (GMT) as compared to normal brain tissue (NBT). D2-2 is also highly expressed in recurrent glioma, colon tumor metastatic to brain, breast tumors, prostate tumors and a prostate tumor cell line (LNCaP). Northern blot analysis showed that D2-2 is highly expressed in several tumor cell lines (MOLT lymphoblastic leukemia, SW480 colorectal adrenocarcinoma, A549 lung carcinoma, HL-60 promyelocytic leukemia, S3 HeLa cells, K-562 chroni
