BACKGROUND: Posterior instrumentation after deformity correction is an important method for reconstruction of spinal stability in the management of lumbar tuberculosis (TB). However, the commonly used methods include both long- and short-segment fixation of normal motor units. There has been no report regarding affected-vertebrae fixation of lumbar TB.
METHODS: Data from 135 patients with lumbar TB who underwent posterior instrumentation and either affected-vertebrae fixation or short-segment fixation using a combined posterior and anterior approach were retrospectively reviewed. Among these

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the causes, treatment and prevention of esophageal fistulas after anterior cervical spine surgery.
METHOD: Between January 2004 and December 2011, 5 of 2348 patients who underwent anterior cervical surgery in our hospital developed esophageal fistulas (three male and two female patients, average age 34 years). Their diagnoses were cervical injuries (three), cervical spondylosis (one) and cervical tuberculosis (one). Their esophageal fistulas were treated by debridement and exploratory surgery, primary suturing of the perforation and/or sternocleidomastoid myoplasty. If

Regardless of the compartment involved, imaging of spinal infections and other spinal inflammatory diseases must be performed by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This allows early detection of changes in disk space or vertebral bodies. Associated paraspinal and epidural masses are depicted. However, in spinal cord inflammation MRI has a very limited specificity and cannot usually differentiate between the wide array of possible causes of intramedullary lesions. This article covers a spectrum of inflammatory lesions of the spinal cord.

The clinical data from 19 patients with brucellar spondylitis and 15 with tuberculous spondylitis were compared. The former disease affects males whose occupations expose them to Brucella. The lumbar spine is usually involved and there are other symptoms of brucellosis. Tuberculous spondylitis is not usually accompanied by general symptoms. The dorsal spine is more frequently affected and may exhibit vertebral collapse and paraspinal abscesses. These differences permit a presumptive aetiological diagnosis, but the definitive diagnosis depends upon bacteriological tests.

The development of reparative processes after resection of the vertebrum bodies and anterior spondylodesis by a not-free rib transplant was studied in experiment and in 95 patients. Only in 1 of them the supporting capacity of the vertebral column was not restored. Transplants on the feeding pedicles for anterior spondylodesis should be used in all the cases where there are anatomical prerequisites for the formation of its feeding pedicle.

Tuberculous spondylitis is a very rare disease, but it can result in bone destruction, kyphotic deformity, spinal instability, and neurologic complications unless early diagnosis and proper management are done. Because the most common symptom of tuberculous spondylitis is back pain, it can often be misdiagnosed. Atypical tuberculous spondylitis can be presented as a metastatic cancer or a primary vertebral tumor. We must make a differential diagnosis through adequate biopsy. A 30-year-old man visited our clinic due to back and chest pain after a recent traffic accident. About 1 year ago, he ha

We evaluated clinical features of five cases of Toxoplasma encephalitis (TE) occurring in recent Haitian entrants into the United States. None of the patients had any underlying malignancy or known immunosuppressive therapy. Histopathologic findings of TE at autopsy were confirmed by peroxidase-antiperoxidase method. Four patients had an antecedent episode of disseminated tuberculosis and all five were receiving antituberculous therapy when neurologic manifestations of lethargy, seizures, and motor weakness first developed. These symptoms progressed into coma and death within 15 days. Peripher

BACKGROUND: Osteoarticular tuberculosis (OATB) in children may lead to bone and joint deformities, which seriously affect the growth and development of children. However, the epidemiological data on pediatric OATB are relatively scarce. The goal of this study is to understand the epidemiological characteristics and economic burden of OATB in hospitalized children in China. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, multicenter cross-sectional study covering hospitalized children with OATB in 24 hospitals in six regions of China from 2016 to 2021. Sociodemographic and geographic variables, admissio

OBJECTIVE: The pedicle morphology of ankylosing spondylitis (AS)-related thoracolumbar kyphosis patients may be different from that of individuals with normal spine due to the ectopic ossification and kyphotic deformity. However, there was no literature analyzing the pedicle morphology of AS patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the pedicle morphology of lower thoracic and lumbar spine (T9-L5) in ankylosing spondylitis (AS)-related thoracolumbar kyphosis patients.
METHODS: A retrospective review of AS patients with thoracolumbar kyphosis (AS g

A 71-year-old man was admitted to Teikyo University Hospital with paraplegia, subileus, back pain and high fever. He gave a history of having received treatment for spinal caries 20 years previously. Chest computed tomography and esophageal endoscopy demonstrated evidence of spinal caries and traction mid-esophageal diverticulum associated with kyphosis of the spine. The present report describes the extremely rare case of diverticula associated with kyphosis of the spine caused by spinal caries (Pott's spinal caries).

Gluteal abscess is a well-documented presentation of a caries spine and other local bony foci of tuberculosis. Still, during a PUBMED data search, only one report of vertebral tuberculosis presenting only as a gluteal abscess in adults was found in English medical literature. The current article describes a case of tuberculosis of the lumbar spine with gluteal abscess as the only clinical feature, in an immunocompetent young adult.
