CRIMSON: An open-source software framework for cardiovascular integrated modelling and simulation.

In this work, we describe the CRIMSON (CardiovasculaR Integrated Modelling and SimulatiON) software environment. CRIMSON provides a powerful, customizable and user-friendly system for performing three-dimensional and reduced-order computational haemodynamics studies via a pipeline which involves: 1) segmenting vascular structures from medical images; 2) constructing analytic arterial and venous geometric models; 3) performing finite element mesh generation; 4) designing, and 5) applying boundary conditions; 6) running incompressible Navier-Stokes simulations of blood flow with fluid-structure

Predicting kinase inhibitors using bioactivity matrix derived informer sets.

Prediction of compounds that are active against a desired biological target is a common step in drug discovery efforts. Virtual screening methods seek some active-enriched fraction of a library for experimental testing. Where data are too scarce to train supervised learning models for compound prioritization, initial screening must provide the necessary data. Commonly, such an initial library is selected on the basis of chemical diversity by some pseudo-random process (for example, the first few plates of a larger library) or by selecting an entire smaller library. These approaches may not pro

Three-dimensional surgical planning for maxillary and midface distraction osteogenesis.

Computerized surgical planning protocols for distraction osteogenesis are still in their rudimentary phase. The authors have developed a system to plan distraction osteogenesis in craniofacial and maxillofacial surgery that uses three-dimensional computed tomography scans and computer simulation in a virtual reality environment. This involves the creation of a three-dimensional bone model of the craniofacial skeleton, which incorporates virtual globes. Virtual osteotomies are performed on the bone model and the movements of the bone segments are simulated. The program generates a recipe for th

In silico prediction of novel inhibitors of the DNA binding activity of FoxG1.

Forkhead box (Fox) proteins are a superfamily of evolutionarily conserved transcriptional regulators, which control a wide spectrum of biological processes. FoxG1 is a transcriptional repressor, whose function has been elucidated recently. FoxG1 overexpression was found to be associated with medulloblastoma and hepatoblastoma. It was suggested that the inhibition of FoxG1 could be a potential target for the development of molecular therapeutics in such type of cancers. Since, experimentally derived structure for FoxG1 is unavailable in any of the structural databases, modeling of the DNA bindi

Neurorehabilitation using the virtual reality based Rehabilitation Gaming System: methodology, design, psychometrics, usability and validation.

BACKGROUND: Stroke is a frequent cause of adult disability that can lead to enduring impairments. However, given the life-long plasticity of the brain one could assume that recovery could be facilitated by the harnessing of mechanisms underlying neuronal reorganization. Currently it is not clear how this reorganization can be mobilized. Novel technology based neurorehabilitation techniques hold promise to address this issue. Here we describe a Virtual Reality (VR) based system, the Rehabilitation Gaming System (RGS) that is based on a number of hypotheses on the neuronal mechanisms underlying

Voice recognition and aphasia: can computers understand aphasic speech?

PURPOSE: This preliminary investigation of the use of voice recognition software by people with aphasia presents a new method of training the software, which allows the aphasic user to by-pass the linguistically demanding standard training. It examines how accurately voice recognition software performed with aphasic speech and language as compared to that of control subjects. METHOD: Five non-impaired controls and six participants with aphasia used a vocabulary of 50 words and 24 phrases to train the software over a maximum of five sessions. For the people with aphasia baseline assessments pr

Computer interview for screening blood donors for risk of HIV transmission.

To test the ability of a computer-based interview to detect factors related to the risk of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) among potential blood donors, and to determine donor reactions to the use of the computer, we compared the rate of detection of HIV-related factors elicited by the computer interview with the rate elicited by standard American Red Cross procedures (written questionnaires and face-to-face interviews) for assessment of donor suitability. The study was performed at a Red Cross blood donor center and a hospital. A consecutive sample of 294 male and female blood donors 1

Computer-assisted midface reconstruction in Treacher Collins syndrome part 1: skeletal reconstruction.

INTRODUCTION: Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) is a severe and complex craniofacial malformation affecting the facial skeleton and soft tissues. The palate as well as the external and middle ear are also affected, but his prognosis is mainly related to neonatal airway management. Methods of zygomatico-orbital reconstruction are numerous and currently use primarily autologous bone, lyophilized cartilage, alloplastic implants, or even free flaps. This work developed a reliable "customized" method of zygomatico-orbital bony reconstruction using a generic reference model tailored to each patient.

Investigating the Impact of Training Protocols on Myoelectric Pattern Recognition Control in Upper-Limb Amputees.

Myoelectric control schemes, pivotal in the control of prosthetic limbs, are often developed and evaluated in ideal laboratory conditions. However, these controlled environments may not fully represent the diverse challenges users face in real-world scenarios. The present study aims to tackle some of the existing research limitations by exploring the influence of various model training protocols on myoelectric pattern recognition within a semi-autonomous control system, which has been shown to reduce user cognitive load and enhance overall system performance. Specifically, we focus on the effe

Study of Sexual Dimorphism in Metatarsal Bones: Geometric and Inertial Analysis of the Three-Dimensional Reconstructed Models.

The aim of the present paper is to determine the sex of the individual using three-dimensional geometric and inertial analyses of metatarsal bones. Metatarsals of 60 adult Chinese subjects of both sexes were scanned using Aquilion One 320 Slice CT Scanner. The three-dimensional models of the metatarsals were reconstructed, and thereafter, a novel software using the center of mass set as the origin and the three principal axes of inertia was employed for model alignment. Eight geometric and inertial variables were assessed: the bone length, bone width, bone height, surface-area-to-volume ratio,

A Novel Health-Transportation Partnership Paves The Road For Young Driver Safety Through Virtual Assessment.

Motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of adolescent mortality and injury in the United States. For young drivers, crash risk peaks immediately after licensure and declines during the next two years, making the point of licensure an important safety intervention opportunity. Legislation in Ohio established a unique health-transportation partnership among the State of Ohio, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and Diagnostic Driving, Inc., to identify underprepared driver license applicants through a virtual driving assessment system. The system, a computer-based virtual driving test, e
