Motion-induced anxiety and agoraphobia are more frequent symptoms in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) than migraine without vertigo. The neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a therapeutic target for migraine and VM, but the link between motion hypersensitivity, anxiety, and CGRP is relatively unexplored, especially in preclinical mouse models. To further examine this link, we tested the effects of systemic CGRP and off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) on elevated plus maze (EPM) and rotarod performance in male and female C57BL/6J mice. Rotarod ability was assessed using tw

Ménière disease (MD) is an idiopathic inner ear disorder, and endolymphatic hydrops (EH) being considered to be its pathological basis. Currently, there is no gold standard for diagnosing MD. Previous study has reported visualized EH using MRI by intratympanic gadolinium-based contrast media (GBCM) administration (IT-Gd) in patients with MD, and this technique was gradually established for MD diagnosis. However, few studies reported their diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in clinical application. This prospective study aimed at investigating the clinical characteristics and magnetic reson

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to compare the vestibular system integrity of individuals with normal hearing with that of prelingual hearing impaired individuals. It is well known that ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs) reflect utricular function, whereas cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEMPs) reflect saccular function. Therefore, oVEMP and cVEMP tests were applied to evaluate the vestibular system integrity of hearing impaired individuals participating in the research.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study group consisted of sensorineural prelingu

The vestibular system constitutes the silent sixth sense: It automatically triggers a variety of vital reflexes to maintain postural and visual stability. Beyond their role in reflexive behavior, vestibular afferents contribute to several perceptual and cognitive functions and also support voluntary control of movements by complementing the other senses to accomplish the movement goal. Investigations into the neural correlates of vestibular contribution to voluntary action in humans are challenging and have progressed far less than research on corresponding visual and proprioceptive involvemen

OTX proteins, homologs of the Drosophila orthodenticle (Otd), are important for the morphogenesis of the neuroectoderm, and for the central nervous system formation. OTX1 and OTX2 are important for the cochlea and macula development, indeed when OTX1 is knocked down, these organs undergo developmental failure. Moreover OTX2 transfection revert this effect in OTX1(-/-) mice. The TA isoform of TP63, involved in Notch regulation pathway, has a critical function in the cochlear neuroepithelium differentiation. TAp63 positively regulates Hes5 and Atoh1 transcription. This pathway has been also demo

The otolith-ocular reflex in patients with episodic lateral tilt sensation without any other vestibular symptoms was assessed using ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP). Ten patients (6 men and 4 women, mean age=53.5) were enrolled. All patients had episodic lateral tilt sensation. Patients with a medical history of rotatory vertigo, loss of consciousness, head trauma, or symptoms or signs of central nervous dysfunction or proprioceptive dysfunction and those who had been definitely diagnosed with a disease that causes disequilibrium were excluded. All of the 10 patients had oV

This work was designed to develop a mathematical model based on the results of computed stabilometry in the subjects differing in the degree of resistance to motion sickness. The model is designed for the purpose of instant diagnostics in the course of occupational selection. Stabilometric characteristics of 61 men aged from18 to 24 years were compared with those obtained by the method of continuous cumulation of Coriolis accelerations. The accuracy of diagnostics with the use of stabilometry was estimated at 93.2%. It is concluded that computed stabilometry provides an efficacious tool for th

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The field of neuro-otology has advanced substantially over the past 150 years. The function of the vestibular system was presumed to be audiologic prior to the groundbreaking work of Prosper Ménière in the late 1800s. Since that time, scientific discovery has advanced our knowledge of the physiology and the pathophysiology of the vestibular system. This article describes where we have been, where we are now, and where we need to go from here.
RECENT FINDINGS: Some of the important recent advances include: (1) improved imaging of the brain and inner ear, (2) development of n

Vertigo, unsteadiness, and other balance-related symptoms are common among older adults. These complaints should be taken seriously because they can lead to falls, injuries, loss of independence, and even death. This article provides a review of the underlying causes for the increased prevalence of dizziness with age, and discusses how specific test procedures may need to be modified for older individuals. Issues related to the management of these symptoms in the aging population are also considered.
