Oral Pyogenic Granuloma After Bone Marrow Transplant in the Pediatric/Adolescent Population: Report of 5 Cases.

Pyogenic granuloma (PG) is a benign, neoplastic, soft tissue growth of granulation and fibrous tissue that may rarely occur in the mouth of patients after hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT). This case series describes 5 pediatric/adolescent patients who developed oral PG after HCT for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, Fanconi anemia, nodular sclerosis Hodgkin's lymphoma, or junctional epidermolysis bullosa. The underlying mechanism for the appearance of oral PG after HCT is unknown, but it is suggested that calcineurin inhibitors used for graft versus host disease (GVHD) may play a role, as all p

Indications for the HPV vaccine in adolescents: a review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: The vaccine against human papillomavirus (HPV) was created to abrogate the risk that the virus presents for the development of cervical cancers. The prevalence of HPV infection among healthy individuals is significant (20%). We performed a review of the literature published in the period from 2008 to 2012 regarding the use of the vaccine against HPV specifically in adolescents. METHODS: The articles were selected from a search of the PubMed database with the key words "vaccine", "HPV" and "adolescent". This search identified 576 articles; based on readings of the titles and abstra

Comorbid psychiatric disorders in female adolescents with first-onset anorexia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with anorexia nervosa (AN) exhibit high rates of psychiatric comorbidity. To disentangle the effects of duration of illness on comorbid psychiatric symptoms, we investigated the rates of comorbid psychiatric disorders, suicidality and self-harm behaviour in adolescent patients with a first onset of AN. METHODS: In adolescent females (n = 148) with a first onset of AN, body mass index, psychiatric comorbidity (according to DSM-IV), depressive symptoms, suicidality and self-injurious behaviour were assessed. RESULTS: Seventy patients (47.3%) met the criteria for at least on

Proximal humeral physeal widening: little leaguer's shoulder or a variation of normal development?

Little leaguer's shoulder is a syndrome involving the proximal humeral epiphyseal plate and has been reported in adolescent athletes between 13-16 years of age. We present an adolescent case with radiological findings of little leaguer's shoulder syndrome in a non-athletic patient. The patient had applied significant rotational stress to the proximal humeral physis as a result of overuse due to physiotherapy, but the left asymptomatic side appeared more affected radiologically, which led to the idea that this may be a physiological change that occurs in adolescents. We thus evaluated the anter

Phenylketonuria diet in adolescents--energy and nutrient intake--is it adequate?

The age at which phenylalanine (PA) restricted diet can be safely terminated in phenylketonuria (PKU) children has been the subject of discussion but a recent United States collaborative study has provided data showing that blood PA level should be kept below 10 mg/dl at least through adolescence. This presents nutritional problems in providing an adequate diet to meet the adolescent growth spurt in the absence of reliable information on the nutrient requirements of PKU adolescents. The problem is complicated by the emotional development of adolescence presenting compliance difficulties. The u

Disordered Eating in Early Adolescence: Disparities Among Minoritised Youth.

BACKGROUND: Disordered eating in early adolescence impacts development, with long-term health implications. Minoritised adolescents might be at higher risk of disordered eating due to minority stress, but most research has focused on White, heterosexual, cisgender individuals; less is known about disordered eating among minoritised adolescents. We examined sexual, gender, racial, and ethnic identities in relation to disordered eating in early adolescence. METHOD: Using 2-year follow-up data from adolescents ages 10-14 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N = 9385), we examined

Seafood and Neurocognitive Development in Children: A Systematic Review.

Seafood is a source of essential nutrients to support neurocognitive development of children and adolescents, but there are concerns about contaminant exposure. Assessing seafood as a food group, rather than a source of nutrients or contaminants, can inform future dietary guidance. This study aimed to update and assess relationships between seafood consumption during childhood and adolescence and neurocognitive development. Three electronic databases were searched until September 2024 to update a previous search from 2000 to 2019. Articles were included if associations were assessed between se

Slow maturation of planning in obstacle avoidance in humans.

Complex gait (e.g., obstacle avoidance) requires a higher cognitive load than simple steady-state gait, which is a more automated movement. The higher levels of the central nervous system, responsible for adjusting motor plans to complex gait, develop throughout childhood into adulthood. Therefore, we hypothesize that gait strategies in complex gait are likely to mature until adulthood as well. However, little is known about the maturation of complex gait from childhood into adolescence and adulthood. To address this issue, we investigated obstacle avoidance in forty-four 8- to 18-yr-old parti

Trajectory Classes of Externalizing and Internalizing Symptoms to Adolescent Gambling Participation: An Exploratory Study.

Engagement in underage gambling remains a public health concern. Risk factors for the development of gambling behaviours in adolescence include the presence of externalizing and/or internalizing problems. This study aims to better understand the role of co-occurrence between externalizing and internalizing symptoms from childhood to adolescence in adolescent gambling. Participants were drawn from an ongoing longitudinal study of children with and without early conduct problems. Externalizing and internalizing problems were measured annually using teacher and parent reports. Gambling behaviours

The relationship between gambling attitudes, involvement, and problems in adolescence: Examining the moderating role of coping strategies and parenting styles.

INTRODUCTION: Several factors are associated with an increased risk of adolescent problem gambling, including positive gambling attitudes, higher levels of gambling involvement, ineffective coping strategies and unhelpful parenting practices. It is less clear, however, how these factors interact or influence each other in the development of problem gambling behavior during adolescence. The aim of the current study was to simultaneously explore these predictors, with a particular focus on the extent to which coping skills and parenting styles may moderate the expected association between gambli

Medication adherence in adolescents: physiological, psychosocial, and clinical perspectives.

Adolescence is a developmental stage characterized by significant physiological, psychological, and social changes. These changes are known to have a direct impact on medication use and adherence to treatment. Adolescents tend to have low adherence rates to treatment for chronic illnesses. When irrationally managed, this situation can lead to problems such as inadequate disease control, increased risk of complications, and increased use of healthcare services. The aim of this review is to evaluate the factors affecting medication adherence in adolescents, especially those specific to adolescen

Shedding light on the dark side of identity: Introduction to the special issue.

The aim of this special issue is to shed light in the dark side of identity formation in adolescence and emerging adulthood, that is, to provide some understanding in what exactly can go wrong in identity development. After summarizing the recent developments in identity development literature, in this introduction the main findings of all thirteen empirical papers are summarized into three overarching themes: (1) lack of identity integration as a risk factor, (2) reconsideration of commitment as a sign of identity uncertainty, and (3) ruminative exploration as another risk factor undermining
