Bilateral Eyelid Agenesis With Multiple Congenital Ocular Anomalies in an Australian Labradoodle Puppy: Case Report and Surgical Management.

A 15-week-old Australian Labradoodle puppy was presented to The University of Queensland Small Animal Hospital for bilateral eyelid agenesis … Other important histological findings were persistent pupillary membranes, retinal separation, and aphakia. Histopathology of the skin wedge from the right eye demonstrated complete absence of conjunctival goblet cells, tarsal plate, and meibomian glands, consistent with the finding of eyelid agenesis/coloboma. This report describes an uncommon and under …

New GJA8 variants and phenotypes highlight its critical role in a broad spectrum of eye anomalies.

GJA8 encodes connexin 50 (Cx50), a transmembrane protein involved in the formation of lens gap junctions. GJA8 mutations have been linked to … nd microphthalmia, whereas the variant p.(Gly94Arg) was identified in an individual with congenital aphakia, sclerocornea, microphthalmia and coloboma. Four missense variants of unknown or unlikely clinical significance were also identified. Furthermore, the screening of GJA8 structural variants in a subgroup of 188 individuals identified heterozygous 1q2 …

[The currently most common causes of childhood blindness in Kinshasa (d. R. Congo)].

BACKGROUND: 90 % of blind children live in the developing world. Only limited data are available on the prevalence and causes of blindness. … laucoma/buphthalmos (7.6 %), cataract (6.9 %), microphthalmos (3.5 %), vitreous opacity (2.8 %) and aphakia (2.1 %). The aetiology of blindness could not be determined in most of the children. Trauma, measles in conjunction with vitamin A deficiency, and the use of traditional eye medications are presumed to be the commonest causes of corneal opacity/scar …

Refractive error blindness.

Recent data suggest that a large number of people are blind in different parts of the world due to high refractive error because they are not using appropriate refractive correction. Refractive error as a cause of blindness has been recognized only recently with the increasing use of presenting visual acuity for defining blindness. In addition to blindness due to naturally occurring high refractive error, inadequate refractive correction of aphakia after cataract surgery is also a significant cause of blindness in developing countries. Blindness due to refractive error in any population sugges…

Scleral fixation of posterior chamber intraocular lenses in children.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Children with monocular aphakia who become contact lens intolerant require an intraocular lens (IOL) for visual rehabilitation. When there is inadequate support from the posterior lens capsule, use of an anterior chamber IOL or a sclerally fixated posterior chamber IOL may be considered. The authors report their experience with scleral fixation of posterior chamber IOLs in children. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Seven posterior chamber IOLs were sutured in the ciliary sulcus of children who could not wear contact lenses. In each eye, the lens capsule remnants were inadequate…

[Corneal sensibility following epikeratophakia].

The postoperative rate of reinnervation following corneal surgery is widely considered to be a useful indicator of the healing process. This study reports the corneal sensitivity of 14 patients following epikeratophakia for different indications (myopia, aphakia and keratoconus) after time periods ranging from 7 to 104 weeks. All transplants were clear at the time of measurement. A newly developed aesthesiometer (using a low electric current for stimulation) was employed. Nine positions on the operated eye were chosen for the measurements, five locations of the non-operated fellow eye served a…

[Light-induced damage to the eye].

The following review outlines the mechanisms of phototoxicity that are known so far, how they develop, which risk factors are involved, and … photochemical light damage. Lipofuscin, photo-sensitizing drugs and prolonged exposure, as well as aphakia and pseudophakia, can increase the risk. Thermal injury is caused mainly by absorption of longer-wavelength light by the retinal pigment epithelium; the effects are usually immediate. The amount of light that can cause threshold damage by common lig …

[Keratocyte activity in wound healing process following epikeratophakia in rabbits].

Epikeratophakia is a refractive surgery for the correction of aphakia, high myopia and keratoconus. Although many clinical studies of epikeratophakia have been performed, its wound healing process is not well understood. In the present study, we investigated keratocyte activities, particularly cell proliferation and collagen synthesis activity, during wound healing following epikeratophakia in rabbit corneas. Ten, 16, 28, 45, 63 and 90 days after the operation, corneas were excised, labeled with either 3H-thymidine (10 microCi/ml) or 3H-proline (10 microCi/ml) in DME for 4 hours and examined h…

Surgical and visual results of pediatric epikeratophakia.

We performed epikeratophakia for the correction of aphakia in 31 children, ages 2 months to 7 years, who had unilateral congenital or traumatic cataracts. In 27 patients with more than 4 months of follow-up, 23 of 30 (77%) grafts were successful. In the 15 patients with 6 months or more followup, the average increase in corneal curvature was 12.39 diopters. The average overrefraction needed to achieve emmetropia was + 2.14 diopters spherical equivalent. Two patients operated on within the first year of life have achieved 6/15 (20/50) visual acuities, as measured by visual evoked potentials. On…

Intraocular Lens Techniques in Pediatric Eyes with Insufficient Capsular Support: Complications and Outcomes.

Intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in pediatric eyes with insufficient capsular support is challenging and there are multiple IOL options. These include placement of an IOL within the capsular bag with a capsular tension ring, a scleral-fixated posterior-chamber IOL (PCIOL) with or without capsular tension segment or ring, an intra-scleral fixated IOL, an iris-sutured PCIOL, or an anterior chamber iris-fixated IOL. We reviewed 48 articles and 1 published abstract describing the surgical techniques, complications and visual outcomes of different IOL options in the management of aphakic pediatr

Sutureless intrascleral fixation of intraocular lens through self-sealing sclerotomy wounds using haptic externalization and reinternalization technique.

In eyes with absent or insufficient capsule support, three-piece posterior chamber intraocular lens (PC IOL) may be fixed to the sclera. Previous techniques involve the use of sutures, flaps, glue, needles, trocars, or intrascleral tunnels to fixate the distal tips of the haptics intrasclerally. Herein we describe a modified technique for the sutureless scleral fixation of a standard 3-piece PC IOL using self-sealing sclerotomies created with a crescent blade and a 20-gauge microvitreoretinal blade, and then reinserting the haptics to leave the tips inside the vitreous cavity. We believe the r

Emmetropization and eye growth in young aphakic chickens.

PURPOSE: To establish a chick model to investigate the trends of eye growth and emmetropization after early lensectomy for congenital cataract. METHODS: Four monocular treatments were applied: lens extraction (LX); sham surgery/-30 D lens; LX/+20 D lens; and LX/+30-D lens (nine per group). Lens powers were selected to slightly undercorrect or overcorrect the induced hyperopia in LX eyes and to induce comparable hyperopia in sham-surgery eyes. Refractive errors and axial ocular dimensions were measured over a 28-day period. External ocular dimensions were obtained when the eyes were enucleated

Traumatic subluxation causing variable position of the crystalline lens.

We present a case of traumatic lens subluxation that was evident only when the patient was in the supine position. This case illustrates that a crystalline lens with traumatic zonular rupture can change its position depending on the posture of the patient. If such a lens is suspended by the remaining zonules at the superior quadrant while the patient is erect, phacodonesis may be present while the lens remains in its normal position. However, when the patient is in the supine position, the lens drops back into the vitreous cavity. Examination in erect and supine positions is important in the p
