Neuromyopathic complications in a patient with anorexia nervosa and vitamin C deficiency.

A 19-year-old female patient with anorexia nervosa developed profound weight loss over 1 year associated with vegetarianism and excessive exercise. There was severe wasting and proximal muscle weakness in the legs and bilateral weakness of eye closure. A purpuric rash developed due to vitamin C deficiency. This case demonstrates a new neurological sign in anorexia nervosa indicating a weakness of the orbicularis oculi muscles as part of a more general myopathy. The myopathic and scorbutic features may have a common pathogenesis.

Controlled vitamin C restriction and physical performance in volunteers.

A double-blind study on the effects of vitamin C restriction on physical performance was executed with 12 healthy men. During seven weeks of low vitamin C intake six subjects were on a daily diet of regular food products, providing 20% of the Dutch Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) for vitamin C (Dutch RDA is 50 mg/day). Other vitamins were supplemented at twice the RDA level. After three weeks of low vitamin intake an additional vitamin C dose of 15 mg/day was provided, resulting in a total intake of 25 mg/day (50% of the Dutch RDA). Six control subjects consumed the same diet supplemented

Immunological evidence for the accumulation of lipoprotein(a) in the atherosclerotic lesion of the hypoascorbemic guinea pig.

Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is an extremely atherogenic lipoprotein. Lp(a) has been found in the plasma of humans and other primates, but until now only in a few other species. The mechanism by which it exerts its atherogenicity is still poorly understood. We observed that Lp(a) has been found in the plasma of several species unable to synthesize ascorbate and not in other species. We have now detected apoprotein(a) in the plasma of the guinea pig. We induced atherosclerosis in this animal by dietary ascorbate depletion and, using SDS/PAGE and subsequent immunoblotting, we identified Lp(a) as accum

[The pathological study of enterosiderosis in guinea pigs].

Enterosiderosis in both SPF Hartley guinea pigs and vitamin C-deficient animals of the same strain were studied by light and electron microscopy. Enterosiderosis was detected in all animals in the present study. Macrophages, inclosing yellowish-brown pigments and erythrocytes, appeared in the lamina propria of the intestinal mucosa, mainly in the cecum. These pigments in the macrophages were positive for Prussian blue, PAS and the Nile blue reaction. Residual bodies containing highly electron-dense ferritin-like particles, lipofuscin granules and debris of phagocytized erythrocytes were found

Glutaraldehyde-reacted immunoprecipitates of L-gulonolactone oxidase are suitable for administration to guinea pigs.

The potential pharmacologic use of enzymes has long been considered. Practical applications, however, have been limited by the toxicity and allergic response to administered foreign proteins. A simple in vitro modification that allows the intraperitoneal administration of large doses of L-gulonolactone oxidase to guinea pigs is described. The enzyme is precipitated by guinea pig antisera and reacted with glutaraldehyde (0.125%). The product is comparatively nontoxic in guinea pigs. Administration of this enzyme enables guinea pigs to synthesize ascorbic acid. Success of this approach may depen

Effect of ascorbic acid and citric acid on bioavailability of iron from Tegillarca granosa via an in vitro digestion/Caco-2 cell culture system.

Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) has been receiving worldwide attention. Developing safe and effective iron supplements is of great significance for IDA treatment. Tegillarca granosa (T. granosa), a traditional aquaculture bivalve species in China, is considered to be an excellent source of micronutrients, but the distribution and bioavailability of these minerals have yet to be investigated. The present research was conducted to determine the contents and in vitro enzymatic digestibility of minerals in T. granosa, using beef and wheat flour as reference foods. Meanwhile, two iron-binding protein

[Scurvy--a mistakenly forgotten disease].

Four cases of scurvy diagnosed within a period of two years are reported. They comprised 2 male patients with heavy nicotine and alcohol abuse, a 35-year-old woman with malnutrition due to food supplements phobia, and a 69-year-old woman with malnutrition due to dementia and social isolation. All four patients were adynamic and anemic. Three patients showed typical dermatologic signs with hemorrhagic hyperceratosis, suffusions or cork-screw hair. Two patients complained of parodontol disorders. Other symptoms were gastrointestinal bleeding, sicca syndrome, retinal bleeding, subdural hematoma,

Therapeutic combination of L-ascorbic acid, N-acetylcysteine, and dimethyl fumarate in Friedreich's ataxia: insights from in vitro models.

Friedreich's Ataxia (FRDA) is a rare neurological disorder caused by an abnormal expansion of Guanine-Adenine-Adenine (GAA) repeat in intron 1 of the FXN gene, which encodes frataxin, leading to reduced expression of frataxin, a mitochondrial protein essential for cellular homeostasis. Frataxin deficiency results in oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction and impaired redox balance. Currently, there is no cure for FRDA. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of antioxidants dimethyl fumarate (DMF), N-acetylcysteine (NAC), and L-ascorbic acid (LAA) in restoring mitochondr

Sequential analysis of oxidative stress markers and vitamin C status in acute bacterial osteomyelitis.

In bacterial bone infections, excessively formed oxidants may result in local and systemic oxidative stress. Vitamin C is the major extracellular nonenzymatic antioxidant, also implicated in bone cells metabolism and viability. The physiological functions of vitamin C largely depend on its redox status. We sequentially assessed oxidative stress markers, hydroperoxides and malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant activity (AOA), total vitamin C, ascorbic acid (Asc), and oxidized/reduced vitamin C ratio in 137 patients with acute osteomyelitis (OM). Compared to 52 healthy controls, in OM group b

Effects of ascorbic acid on Chlamydia trachomatis infection and on erythromycin treatment in primary cultures of human amniotic cells.

Ascorbic acid (vitamin C) is an essential nutrient for humans. It may also be needed by Chlamydia trachomatis, an intracellular bacterium. We investigated the effects of vitamin C on the growth of C. trachomatis E/UW-5/Cx in a primary culture of human amniotic epithelial cells. The results showed that vitamin C enhances C. trachomatis infection at concentrations of 0.2, 0.6, and 1.2 mg/dl (P less than 0.001). These three concentrations represent the in vivo concentrations of deficiency, normal, and overload levels in serum, respectively. The enhancement was dose dependent. However, the growth

Effect of dietary protein and hypervitaminosis A or C on tissue peroxidation and erythrocyte lysis of vitamin E deficiency.

Rats were maintained on a vitamin E free diet containing 20% safflower oil for a period of 12 weeks at two dietary protein levels, 20% and 10% casein. Enhanced in vitro tissue lipid peroxidation and lysis of erythrocytes were noticed at both the protein levels. A reduction in body mass and tissue weights were observed in both the protein groups but more so at 20% protein level. Feeding of retinyl palmitate (100 000 IU/100 g body weight) for 4 consecutive days to -E rats inhibited liver and kidney in vitro lipid peroxidation. Ascorbic acid (150 mg/100 g body weight) given orally for 5 days to -

Nutrient intake and biochemical markers of nutritional status during long-term follow-up after total and partial gastrectomy.

Dietary intake and biochemical nutritional status was studied in patients who had undergone total gastrectomy (TG, n = 10) or partial gastrectomy (PG, n = 10) several years ago. The dietary intake of energy, macronutrients and micronutrients was very similar in the two groups and was also similar to the intake reported for healthy subjects in Sweden. The concentration of alpha-tocopherol in serum was subnormal in the TG group and that of carotene in both groups of patients, and the values were also significantly lower in the TG group than in the PG group. This was probably due to fat malabsorp
