Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus (CCHFV) is a geographically widespread tick-borne arbovirus that has been recognized by the WHO as an emerging pathogen needing urgent attention to ensure preparedness for potential outbreaks. Therefore, availability of accurate diagnostic tools for identification of acute cases is necessary. A panel comprising 121 sequential serum samples collected during acute, convalescent and subsided phase of PCR-proven CCHFV infection from 16 Kosovar patients was used to assess sensitivity. Serum samples from 60 healthy Kosovar blood donors were used to assess specif

Streptococcus gordonii is a commensal oral organism. Harmless in the oral cavity, S. gordonii is an opportunistic pathogen. S. gordonii adheres to body surfaces using surface adhesive proteins (adhesins), which are critical to subsequent formation of biofilm communities. As in most Gram-positive bacteria, S. gordonii surface proteins containing the C-terminal LPXTG motif cleavage sequence are processed by sortase A (SrtA) to become covalently attached to the cell wall. To characterize the functional diversity and redundancy in the family of SrtA-processed proteins, an S. gordonii DL1 markerles

BACKGROUND: Infection with Entamoeba histolytica and associated complications are relatively rare in developed countries. The overall low prevalence in the Western world as well as the possibly prolonged latency period between infection with the causing pathogen and onset of clinical symptoms may delay diagnosis of and adequate treatment for amoebiasis. Amoebic liver abscess (ALA) is the most common extraintestinal manifestation of invasive amoebiasis. Pregnancy has been described as a risk factor for development of invasive amoebiasis and management of these patients is especially complex.

Rhinoviruses may be pathogens contributing to the development of childhood wheezing. However, their role in low risk infants without an asthmatic predisposition is unknown. Knowing which healthy, low risk children are at increased risk for childhood wheezing after rhinovirus wheezing illness (RV-WI) in infancy, might help in developing prevention and treatment strategies for childhood wheezing. The aim of this study was to determine the association of medically attended wheezing at the age of three with RV-WI in the first year of life in low risk children without parental asthma. In a low risk

BACKGROUND: We report a case of a large blue mongolian spot which led to early diagnosis of Hurler's syndrome. This association is uncommon and should be recognized by dermatologists for early diagnosis and management.
CASE REPORT: A male infant from Guinea, born to first-cousin parents, was seen at the age of 4.5 months for multiple, particularly extensive blue mongolian spots. Growth was +2 SD for age and the infant's psychomotor development was normal. A slight thickening of the skin was noticed without real dysmorphism. The blue spots extended over the entire posterior aspect and part of

BACKGROUND: Congenital toxoplasmosis (CT) is a vertically transmitted infection with a variable clinical spectrum, ranging from asymptomatic infection at birth to severe neurological and ocular sequelae. While the classic triad of hydrocephalus, intracranial calcifications, and chorioretinitis is well characterized, isolated neonatal hyperbilirubinemia as the initial presenting feature is uncommon and may delay diagnosis. We report a case of CT in a Chinese neonate who presented with jaundice and was subsequently found to have subclinical active chorioretinitis, cerebral edema, and bilateral c

BACKGROUND: The Babesia microti-like parasite is an emerging tick-borne piroplasm that has been detected in a range of hosts worldwide. Babesia vulpes, which is found in dogs and foxes, has been reclassified from B. microti-like parasites. The relationships among these B. microti-like parasites and B. vulpes with respect to host range and geographical origin have not been elucidated.
METHODS: Blood samples were collected from 27 raccoon dogs in South Korea and used to screen for B. microti-like parasites based on a PCR assay targeting the 18S rRNA gene of Babesia. For comparative purposes, in

BACKGROUND: The benefit of probiotics in newborn children in relation to allergy and general morbidity later in life appears to be controversial. Allergic diseases represent an increasingly important health problem worldwide in recent years. This is evident in all age groups. The occurrence of allergic illnesses also continues to rise exponentially, and thus the use of preventive and prognostic methods, particularly in children with an inherently higher risk of allergy, is gaining increased importance. Since the advent of probiotics the effect of probiosis on immunity through alterations of co

KEY POINTS: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular mortality. Increased sympathetic nerve activity and reduced cardiac baroreflex sensitivity heighten cardiovascular risk, althogh whether such autonomic dysfunction is present in RA is not known. In the present study, we observed an increased sympathetic nerve activity and reduced cardiac baroreflex sensitivity in patients with RA compared to matched controls. Pain was positively correlated with sympathetic nerve activity and negatively correlated with cardiac baroreflex
