Cyclic patterns of high-risk behaviours within ballet culture.

BACKGROUND: To determine whether a sample of pre-professionally trained, professional, and retired ballet dancers experienced body dysmorphia, eating disorders (EDs), perfectionism, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), anxiety, depression, substance use, sexual abuse, and injuries within ballet culture. METHODS: A total of 10 female ballet dancers aged 18-25 years of age participated in a structured interview either in-person or online via Zoom. Interview questions were open-ended to capture the richness of participant responses. The Exercise Science Thematic Analysis Model was utilized to an

Proposing an integrative, dynamic and transdiagnostic model for addictions: dysregulation phenomena of the three main modes of the predostatic mind.

Several theories have been proposed to explain the complex diagnostic aspects related to addiction disorders and their development. Recent frameworks tend to focus on dimensional perspectives of symptoms rather than categorical systems, since substance use disorders are frequently comorbid with other psychiatric and especially personality disorders. However, useful transdiagnostic models that could integrate clinical evaluation derived from neuroscientific theories are lacking. In the present manuscript, the authors propose a model based on a new paradigm, in an attempt to better explain this

Exercise addiction: A review and evaluation of current research and theory.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: While regular physical activity provides many health benefits, exercise can cause more harm than good when done excessively to the point where a person loses control. This condition has been called various names, but the most accurate term is 'exercise addiction' (EA) because it reflects both compulsive behavior and dependence. EA is classified as a non-substance-related addictive disorder, or behavioral addiction, and has been the subject of research for over fifty years. However, it is not officially recognized in major diagnostic systems, mainly due to significant conce

Effects of Short-Term Versus Long-Term Mentalization-Based Therapy on Psychiatric Symptoms in Outpatients With Borderline Personality Disorder: Exploratory Results From a Randomized Clinical Trial.

We conducted a randomized clinical trial assessing the beneficial and harmful effects of short-term versus long-term mentalization-based therapy (MBT) for outpatients with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and found no evidence of a difference on BPD symptom severity, functional impairment, quality of life, global functioning, and severe self-harm. In this paper, we assessed the effects of short-term versus long-term MBT on the exploratory outcome, psychiatric symptoms, assessed with the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R). Participants included the full intention-to-treat sample of th

Emotional speech markers of psychiatric disturbance in Huntington's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Psychiatric disorders and difficulties in emotional expression represent a major problem in the management of Huntington's Disease (HD). To improve patient follow-up, we propose to investigate the link between emotional expression and psychiatric symptoms, measured by the Problem Behaviors Assessment (PBA) scale. To this aim we developed the first emotional/psychiatric speech corpus, emoHD. METHODS: We included 102 HD gene carriers and 35 healthy controls (HC). Psychiatric symptoms were assessed using PBA sub-scales for Depression, Irritability/aggressivity, Apathy, and Obsessiv

DRD1 gene is associated with craving changes during withdrawal among patients with alcohol use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a chronic relapsing condition in which craving is closely linked to relapse. Previous research has shown that the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of the dopamine receptor D1 (DRD1) gene are not associated with craving severity when assessing cross-sectionally. Since craving severity may change after withdrawal, this study tracked craving dynamics over a two-week withdrawal period and examined the relationships with DRD1 SNPs. METHODS: We recruited 221 Taiwanese Han patients with severe AUD diagnosed based on DSM-5-TR and undergoing withdrawal t

Suicidal ideation with and without intention to act: A transdiagnostic network analysis on the interplay between psychopathology, impulsivity, and childhood maltreatment.

BACKGROUND: Suicide represents a significant public health concern. Suicide prevention strategies are shifting toward transdiagnostic perspectives examining interrelated risk factors, but their interrelationships remain unclear. This study investigated relationships between psychopathological dimensions, impulsivity, and childhood maltreatment in individuals with suicidal ideation (SI), comparing those with versus without intention to act using network analysis. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Suicide Prevention and Intervention Study project. Participants were categorized into two group

Patient feedback and psychosocial outcomes of deep brain stimulation in people with obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Severe and refractory psychiatric patients can experience complex and profound changes in symptomology, functioning and well-being from deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy. Currently, the efficacy of DBS is assessed by clinician rated scales of primary symptoms, yet this does not capture the multitude of DBS mediated changes or represent the patient perspective. We aimed to elucidate the patient perspective in psychiatric DBS application by investigating 1) symptomatic, and 2) psychosocial changes, 3) therapeutic expectations and satisfaction, 4) decision-making capacity, and 5) clinical care

Therapeutic drug monitoring of sertraline in children and adolescents: A naturalistic study with insights into the clinical response and treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Sertraline is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor with specific indications in child and adolescent psychiatry. Notwithstanding its frequent use and clinical benefits, the relationship between pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, efficacy, and tolerability of sertraline across indications, particularly in non-adult patients, is not fully understood. METHOD: This naturalistic therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) study was conducted in a transdiagnostic sample of children and adolescents treated with sertraline (n = 78; mean age, 14.22 ± 2.39; range, 7-18 years) within the prospect

More Depression-Related Public Concern After the Suicide of a Pop Star in China: Evidence From the Online Big Data Platform.

Background: In China, we have seen dramatic increases in public concern over depression and mental health after the suicide of some famous persons. The objective of this study is to investigate the changes of search-engine query patterns to monitor this phenomenon based on the tragic suicide of a young Chinese pop star, Kimi Qiao. Methods: The daily search volume for depression was retrieved from both the Baidu Index (BDI) and the Sina MicroBlog Index (SMI). Besides, the daily BDI for suicide, schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, common cold, stomach cancer, and liver cancer were coll

Atopic dermatitis in children.

A 7-year-old girl presented with atopic dermatitis (AD) that did not respond to standard therapy. She was avoiding dairy, egg, and wheat in her diet because of a history of skin flares. Her weight gain was poor, and laboratory test results showed low iron and zinc levels. Over the previous 6 months, she had been prescribed numerous courses of antibiotics, but, despite this, she continued to have secondary skin infections as well as deep circumscribed erosions on her shins. She was awake much of the night because of scratching and displayed repetitive and habitual behavior. She also had trouble

The differential impact of COVID-19 on mental health: Implications of ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability status in the United States.

The COVID-19 pandemic's effects on mental health interact with preexisting health risks and disparities to impact varying populations differently. This study explored the relationship between demographic variables (e.g., ethnicity, sexual orientation, and disability status), distress and mental health (e.g., depression, anxiety, somatic complaints, and pandemic distress), and vulnerability factors for COVID-19 (e.g., personal health vulnerabilities, community members' health vulnerabilities, and environmental exposure risks at work or home). An online cross-sectional study was conducted from 1

Clinician-Reported Person-Centered Culturally Responsive Practices for Youth with OCD and Anxiety.

Background: Exposure-based cognitive behavioral therapy (Ex-CBT) is widely seen as the gold-standard treatment for anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, minoritized youth are underrepresented in efficacy studies, raising questions about the applicability of Ex-CBT to minoritized youth. Effectiveness data suggest systematic adaptation of Ex-CBT to address youth culture and context is likely needed, and many clinicians make adaptations and augmentations in practice. However, research on the specific strategies clinicians use to address their youth clients' culture and context wit

Oculomotor response inhibition abnormalities in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in the orbital prefrontal cortex and its ventral striatal target fields have been identified in neuroimaging studies of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In animal models and studies of patients with lesions to this brain circuitry, a selective disturbance in the ability to suppress responses to irrelevant stimuli has been demonstrated. Such a deficit in response suppression might underlie the apparent inhibitory deficit suggested by the symptoms of OCD. To date, little direct evidence of such a deficit has been reported. Further, although OCD commonly emerges durin

Trichotillomania. An obsessive compulsive spectrum disorder?

Trichotillomania is a neglected neuropsychiatric disorder that only recently has received research attention. Based on clinical data, it appears far more common than previously believed. Like OCD, the behavior is recognized as senseless and undesirable, but is chronic and difficult to treat. The comorbidity, drug response data, familiality, and phenomenology of the disorder extend the concept of OCD to a spectrum of inappropriately released, excessive grooming behaviors. Although the discovery of clomipramine's effectiveness has provided relief to some trichotillomanics, further work is indica

Incidence Rates and Cumulative Incidences of the Full Spectrum of Diagnosed Mental Disorders in Childhood and Adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: Knowledge about the epidemiology of mental disorders in children and adolescents is essential for research and planning of health services. Surveys can provide prevalence rates, whereas population-based registers are instrumental to obtain precise estimates of incidence rates and risks. OBJECTIVE: To estimate age- and sex-specific incidence rates and risks of being diagnosed with any mental disorder during childhood and adolescence. DESIGN: This cohort study included all individuals born in Denmark from January 1, 1995, through December 31, 2016 (1.3 million), and followed up fro

Using Electronically Delivered Therapy and Brain Imaging to Understand Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Pathophysiology: Protocol for a Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a debilitating and prevalent anxiety disorder. Although the basal ganglia and frontal cortex are the brain regions that are most commonly hypothesized to be involved in OCD, the exact pathophysiology is unknown. By observing the effects of proven treatments on brain activation levels, the cause of OCD can be better understood. Currently, the gold standard treatment for OCD is cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) with exposure and response prevention. However, this is often temporally and geographically inaccessible, time consuming, and costly. F
