Overlaps with bladder pain syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome are associated with higher symptom burden and reduced quality of life in functional dyspepsia.

BACKGROUND: Functional dyspepsia and bladder pain syndrome are well-known to overlap with irritable bowel syndrome. Whether functional dyspepsia overlaps with bladder pain syndrome remains unknown. Our aim was to evaluate the presence of bladder pain syndrome in functional dyspepsia patients and its impact. METHODS: All consecutive patients with investigated dyspeptic symptoms in our tertiary care center between March 2015 and November 2018 were studied. Functional dyspepsia and irritable bowel syndrome were diagnosed according to Rome III and IV criteria while bladder pain syndrome was diagn

[Bladder pain syndrome: Long-term results (15 years) of a single-center experience].

INTRODUCTION: The management of bladder pain syndrome (BPS) in our center is standardized although there is no real consensus and recommendations. The objectives of our study were to assess the effectiveness of the treatment offered and to identify predictive factors of response to treatment. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Single-center retrospective study including all patients with BPS. Patient and outcome measures included ICSI and ICPI scores, daytime voiding interval (DVI), nocturnal pollakiuria (NPK), and subjective satisfaction (SS). The complete care protocol (CCP) was based on a hydrodistensi

Liposome-Encapsulated Botulinum Toxin A in Treatment of Functional Bladder Disorders.

Botulinum toxin A (BoNT-A) intravesical injections have been used to treat patients with refractory functional bladder disorders such as overactive bladder (OAB) and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), but the risk of adverse events and the need for repeated injections continue to prevent widespread application of this treatment. Liposomes are vesicles that comprise concentric phospholipid layers and an aqueous core; their flexible compositions enable them to adsorb and fuse with cell membranes and to deliver drugs or proteins into cells. Therefore, liposomes have been consid

Neuromodulation in urology, state of the art.

Sacral neuromodulation is an approved and validated treatment for overactive bladder syndrome, chronic non-obstructive retention, and chronic pelvic pain. Percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation is a less invasive approach of neuromodulation. We performed a literature research to assess the current evidence available about neuromodulation. Both techniques appear to be effective and safe third-line treatments. The overall success rate ranges from 43% to 85% for sacral neuromodulation and from 40% to 79.5% for percutaneous tibial nerve stimulation. Sacral neuromodulation has a higher incidence of

Bladder pain syndrome: Prevalence and routine clinical practice in women attending functional urology and urodynamics units in Spain.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Bladder pain syndrome (BPS) is classified as a rare chronic debilitating disease and its diagnosis presents a challenge because its symptoms overlap with those associated with overactive bladder syndrome. The aim of the routine study was to estimate the prevalence of BPS and discover to study the profile of symptoms and clinical practice for patients attending functional urology and urodynamics units. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An epidemiological study in which 37 functional urology and urodynamics units in Spain participated. The prevalence was studied in both sexes.

Variations in the reporting of outcomes used in systematic reviews of treatment effectiveness research in bladder pain syndrome.

This paper investigates the quality of outcomes reported in systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of bladder pain syndrome and its relationship with study quality and journal impact factor. We searched until August 2013 the Cochrane Library, EMBASE, Medline, CINAHL, LILACS and SIGLE, without language restrictions. Quality of outcome reporting in systematic reviews and constituent RCTs was assessed using a 6-point scale. Overall study quality was assessed using the AMSTAR and Jadad scoring systems, and impact factor in the year of publication was noted. Spearman's rank corr

[The role of immunomodulating therapy in the treatment and prevention of exacerbations of chronic cystitis].

The article presents the results of the examination and treatment of 60 women with chronic cystitis aged 20 to 80 years. The mean disease duration was 4,9 years (ranged from 6 months to 40 years). Immunomodulator Tilorone was included in the complex therapy of 30 patients of the main group. Besides the standard examination, immunological studies, including the definition of netrophil phagocytic rates in the patients were performed. It was revealed that the inclusion of immunomodulator in the treatment regimen of exacerbations of chronic cystitis contributes to an increase of index of activatio

Stem Cell-Based Strategies for Fibrotic and Neurogenic Bladder Disorders: Current Evidence, Translational Challenges, and Future Directions.

Progressive bladder fibrosis and impaired detrusor function represent converging pathological endpoints across diverse bladder disorders, including bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia, spinal cord injury (SCI)-induced neurogenic bladder, radiation cystitis, and interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome. Conventional therapies primarily manage symptoms and rarely reverse established fibrosis or restore durable bladder homeostasis. Mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) have attracted considerable interest as therapeutic agents owing to their antifibrot

Dysbiosis of the Urinary Bladder Microbiome in Cats with Chronic Kidney Disease.

Although feline urinary tract diseases cause high morbidity and mortality rates, and subclinical bacteriuria is not uncommon, the feline urinary microbiome has not been characterized. We conducted a case-control study to identify the feline urinary bladder microbiome and assess its association with chronic kidney disease (CKD), feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), and positive urine cultures (PUCs). Of 108 feline urine samples subjected to 16S rRNA gene sequencing, 48 (44.4%) samples reached the 500-sequence rarefaction threshold and were selected for further analysis, suggesting that the feline

Nerve growth factor in bladder dysfunction: contributing factor, biomarker, and therapeutic target.

In the last two decades, nerve growth factor (NGF), initially described as a prototypical trophic factor in the development of sensory and sympathetic innervation, has emerged as a complex regulator of neural plasticity along the micturition pathways. This review aims to summarize the current experimental and clinical evidence for a role of NGF in urinary bladder. Experimental administration of NGF elicits the states of increased sensation, urgency, and bladder hyperreflexia, resembling pathologies associated with bladder overactivity and inflammatory pain, such as overactive bladder syndrome

[Virological, epidemiological and pathogenic aspects of human polyomaviruses].

UNLABELLED: VIROLOGICAL ASPECTS: Human polyomaviruses (BK virus and JC virus), together with simian polyomaviruses (SV40 virus) share 75% of genomic homology. Their in vivo and in vitro genomes vary. Molecular analyses have identified several genotypes, some of which appear related to the development of viral diseases. Genomic modifications of the regulation area might provide the BKv with a pathogenic aspect thus enhancing the induction of tubulo-interstitial nephropathies in renal transplant recipients. EPIDEMIOLOGY: Human polyomaviruses are ubiquitous and exhibit a sero-prevalence of 60 to

Intravesical sodium hyaluronate inhibits the rat urinary mast cell mediator increase triggered by acute immobilization stress.

PURPOSE: Mast cell activation and stress have been suggested as factors in the pathogenesis of interstitial cystitis, a painful disorder of the bladder that is diagnosed more frequently in women and characterized by increased urgency and frequency with absent infection. Intravesical sodium hyaluronate has been used to treat interstitial cystitis due to its possible replenishment of bladder glycosaminoglycans. We investigated the effect of sodium hyaluronate on the activation of bladder mast cell and release of proinflammatory mediators in the urine induced by acute immobilization stress in rat

Patient Centered Medical Home: What May Be on the Horizon for Urologists.

INTRODUCTION: Medicine has used acronyms for hundreds of years to describe clinical conditions. METHODS: In urology the acronyms BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), ED (erectile dysfunction), IC (interstitial cystitis) and AUR (acute urinary retention) are examples with which we are all familiar. Today we use acronyms to describe the organizational and structural aspects of medicine. RESULTS: The 2 most recent medical acronyms are PPACA (Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act) and ACO (accountable care organization). Now a new acronym, PCMH (patient centered medical home), is looming on
