Understanding cachexia and muscle dysfunction in the context of metastatic breast cancer.

Cancer cachexia significantly impacts the quality of life of cancer patients, predicting therapy response and survival. Cachexia prevalence and severity increases over the course of disease progression, affecting up to 80% of patients with metastatic cancer. Despite this, cachexia is relatively understudied in the context of metastatic breast cancer, despite it affecting a significant proportion of patients with this common cancer. In this review we highlight the relative prevalence of cachexia in breast cancer, with 25% of all patients and up to half of those with metastatic disease impacted.

Hypothetical interventional effect of health behaviors for improving depression symptoms among patients diagnosed with cancer: a g-formula based study.

BackgroundDepressive symptoms are frequently reported among patients undergoing treatment for malignancies and among cancer survivors. However, treatment options for depression in this population remain limited due to significant side effects and suboptimal efficacy. These challenges underscore the urgent need for safe, well-tolerated, and effective strategies to alleviate depressive symptoms in individuals affected by cancer. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the hypothetical interventional effects of seven lifestyle factors on alleviating depressive symptoms in individuals currently or previou

Perceptions of Older Adults with Hematological Cancer on Diet and Exercise Behavior and Its Role in Navigating Daily Tasks.

Diet and exercise are associated with the maintenance of physical function, independence and better health-related quality of life in cancer survivors. Adherence to healthy diet and exercise guidelines, however, remains low. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions of hematological cancer survivors (HCS, ≥50 years) on the role of diet and exercise in navigating daily tasks using a qualitative descriptive research method. Eligible HCS completed an online survey gathering demographic information including physical functioning, exercise frequency, malnutrition and frailty risk. Follow

Protein intake in aged care residents before and after the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety: A review of historical data compared to contemporary intakes.

AIM: Malnutrition is prevalent among aged care residents and is exacerbated by inadequate provision and intake of protein. High rates of malnutrition and inadequate provision of protein were two issues raised by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety that prompted the Federal government to provide financial support to the sector to improve nutrition in residents. We aimed to determine if protein provision to, and intake in, residents has improved and meets requirements following the Royal Commission. METHODS: Protein intakes from 12 Pre-Royal Commission studies were identified

AIMS: To quantify the volume of tray-line packaging waste at an Australian metropolitan tertiary hospital and explore current disposal methods and their environmental impact. METHODS: The patient menu ordering system was used to retrospectively quantify packaged menu items served on the tray-line from March 2023 to March 2024, with some of the data extrapolated from a 3-month period to provide an estimate of 12-month quantities. The packaged weight of all menu items was multiplied by the number of times they were plated and served to patients. Carbon emissions (expressed as carbon equivalents
