Two cases of human philophthalmosis have been reported in Japan. Gravid flukes removed from the eyes of the patients were broken, but their morphological characteristics suggest that an unknown species of the genus Philophthalmus is involved as a pathogen for humans. Vaccine clinical trials with active surveillance for infection often use the time to infection as the primary endpoint. This study aimed to investigate intestinal helminth infection in stray dogs in Osaka Prefecture by surveying coprological samples from dogs captured from 2006-2011. Of 212 fecal samples collected, overall prevalence of infection was 39.2%. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the clinical features and clarify the pathogenicity of "benign cytochrome c oxidase deficiency myopathy."
METHODS: The study included 8 patients with the phenotype of this disease. Six patients underwent muscle biopsies and all the 8 underwent mitochondrial DNA analyses. To confirm the pathogenicity of the detected mitochondrial DNA mutation, we performed northern blot analysis, using muscle specimens, and blue native polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and respiratory chain enzyme activity assay of transmitochondrial cell lines (cybrids).

Standardized Ginkgo biloba extract EGb761 is known to have multivalent properties such as anti-oxidation and anti-apoptosis. In this study, we determined in rat pheochromocytoma (PC12) cells effects of EGb761 treatment on oxidative damage under three different conditions of serum supply: normal growth medium (NGM), serum deprivation (SE) and serum deprivation followed by re-supply (SERS). It was found that, under the condition of serum deprivation, oxidative damage induced less cell death than the condition of serum supply. This appears to be related to inhibition of mitochondrial metabolism.
