In conscious rats implanted with an intracerebroventricular (icv) cannula, effect of icv injections of histamine, chlorpheniramine (H(1)-receptor antagonist) and ranitidine (H(2)-receptor blocker) was investigated in a rat model of acute trigeminal pain. Acute trigeminal pain was induced by putting a drop of 5 M NaCl solution on the corneal surface of the eye and the numbers of eye wipes were counted during the first 30 s. Using primers against highly conserved regions of mammalian and bird aquaporins in RT-PCR experiments, we amplified products derived from duck (Anas platyrhynchos) nasal gland RNA that were identified as homologues of mammalian and chicken aquaporin 1 and aquaporin 5 cDNAs by sequencing. Osmotic demyelination is a serious disease caused by rapid correction of hyponatremia. In humans, demyelinative lesions occur preferentially in the central pons, and thus are termed central pontine myelinolysis. The abortifacient efficacy and complication rate of the administration of hypertonic saline intraamniotically to 796 women were compared with those following administration of various prostaglandins by several routes to 3783 women. Serum and glucocorticoid-regulated kinase-1 (SGK1) is a serine-threonine kinase that is regulated at the transcriptional level by numerous regulatory inputs, including mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids, follicle-stimulating hormone, and osmotic stress. INTRODUCTION: Asthma control and quality of life are poorly associated with traditional asthma biomarkers.
OBJECTIVES: In the present study, we evaluated two new cough provocation tests in this respect.
METHODS: Asthma Control Questionnaire and Leicester Cough Questionnaire were completed by 36 stable asthmatics. Cough provocation tests with hypertonic saline and isocapnic hyperpnoea of dry air were performed, as well as spirometry, ambulatory peak expiratory flow (PEF) monitoring and exhaled nitric oxide (eNO) measurement.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study is to review our experience in pediatric giant pulmonary hydatid cysts focusing on clinical symptoms, location of the cyst, type of the intervention, postoperative complications and long-term results.
METHODS: Between June 2002 and May 2007, 118 children were operated on for hydatid lung cysts. Two groups were defined: Group 1, 32 children with giant hydatid cysts and Group 2, 86 children with non-giant cysts. The statistical significance between the groups was estimated using paired samples t test.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effects continuous infusions of hypertonic saline (3% NaCl) on intracranial pressure (ICP) control and describe the physiologic effects of hypertonic saline administered to closed head injury children.
