Statistical performance evaluation of biometric authentication systems using random effects models.

As biometric authentication systems become more prevalent, it is becoming increasingly important to evaluate their performance. This paper introduces a novel statistical method of performance evaluation for these systems. Given a database of authentication results from an existing system, the method uses a hierarchical random effects model, along with Bayesian inference techniques yielding posterior predictive distributions, to predict performance in terms of error rates using various explanatory variables. By incorporating explanatory variables as well as random effects, the method allows for

T2AgeNet: A Text-Guided Framework With Tissue Features for Brain Age Estimation.

Brain age estimation from structural MRI is an effective approach for detecting abnormal neurodevelopment and neurodegeneration. However, most existing methods produce global biomarkers that lack tissue-level specificity and fail to leverage medical prior knowledge. To address these limitations, we propose T2AgeNet, a dual-path image-text framework for tissue-level brain age estimation that integrates anatomical features with clinical semantics. The framework first segments brain MRI to generate tissue-specific masks, forming the basis for localized age prediction. To further incorporate medica

Deep Learning Reconstruction of Diffusion-weighted MRI Enables Shorter Examination Times While Maintaining Image Quality in Head and Neck Imaging.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) of the head and neck is essential for various clinical applications but is often hampered by artifacts and reduced image quality. Deep learning (DL) reconstruction has the potential to enhance the quality of head and neck DWI. This study aims to evaluate the performance of an accelerated, DL-reconstructed DWI (DWIDL) in terms of image quality and diagnostic confidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included patients who underwent clinically indicated head and neck DWI at 1.5 T and 3 T between August 2023 and January

Qualitative and quantitative assessment of accelerated liver diffusion-weighted imaging using deep-learning reconstruction in oncologic patients.

BACKGROUND: Deep-learning (DL) reconstructions could improve image quality and reduce acquisition time in diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI). This study assessed, qualitatively and quantitatively, DL-DWI in liver metastasis of colorectal cancer patients. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 50 participants from June to November 2022. Phantom and participant data were acquired on a 1.5T MR scanner using a free-breathing DL-DWI research application sequence. Three DWIs were compared: a moderately-accelerated DL-DWI (DL-1), a corresponding standard reconstruction (Standard-1) and a highly-acce

Optimized deep learning for brain tumor detection: a hybrid approach with attention mechanisms and clinical explainability.

Brain tumor classification (BTC) from Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a critical diagnosis task, which is highly important for treatment planning. In this study, we propose a hybrid deep learning (DL) model that integrates VGG16, an attention mechanism, and optimized hyperparameters to classify brain tumors into different categories as glioma, meningioma, pituitary tumor, and no tumor. The approach leverages state-of-the-art preprocessing techniques, transfer learning, and Gradient-weighted Class Activation Mapping (Grad-CAM) visualization on a dataset of 7023 MRI images to enhance both pe

Self-Supervised Joint Reconstruction and Denoising of T2-Weighted PROPELLER MRI of the Lung at 0.55T.

PURPOSE: To improve 0.55T T2-weighted PROPELLER lung MRI by developing a self-supervised framework for joint reconstruction and denoising. METHODS: T2-weighted 0.55T lung MRI datasets from 44 patients with prior COVID-19 infection were used. Each PROPELLER blade was split along the readout direction into two disjoint subsets: one subset for training an unrolled network, and the other for loss calculation. Following the Noise2Noise paradigm, this framework split k-space into two subsets with independent, matched noise but identical underlying signal, enabling joint reconstruction and denoising

Echocardiographic-fluoroscopic fusion imaging for transcatheter mitral valve repair guidance.

The echocardiographic-fluoroscopic fusion imaging is a new imaging system which has recently become available, with the proposal to facilitate catheters and device navigation during catheter-based structural heart disease interventions. Several reports have described the early developments and the first clinical experiences, but literature focusing on the practical applications of fusion imaging technology to mitral valve transcatheter interventions, and on its potential advantages and current limitations, is still limited. In this review, we, therefore, describe the role of this novel imaging

Discriminative imaging of maternal and fetal blood flow within the placenta using ultrafast ultrasound.

Being able to map accurately placental blood flow in clinics could have major implications in the diagnosis and follow-up of pregnancy complications such as intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR). Moreover, the impact of such an imaging modality for a better diagnosis of placental dysfunction would require to solve the unsolved problem of discriminating the strongly intricated maternal and fetal vascular networks. However, no current imaging modality allows both to achieve sufficient sensitivity and selectivity to tell these entangled flows apart. Although ultrasound imaging would be the clini

Impact of ischemia on left ventricular dyssynchrony by phase analysis of gated single photon emission computed tomography myocardial perfusion imaging.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing awareness of the value of phase analysis of gated tomographic myocardial perfusion imaging in assessing left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony. A concern repeatedly raised in many studies is whether reversible defects in the stress images "ischemia" could affect the phase-derived standard deviation and bandwidth, the two commonly used dyssynchrony indices. We hypothesized that the stress and rest images should provide comparable information because the images are acquired 1 hour after the tracer injection. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied two groups of patients with

Registration and real-time visualization of transcranial magnetic stimulation with 3-D MR images.

This paper describes a method for registering and visualizing in real-time the results of transcranial magnetic stimulations (TMS) in physical space on the corresponding anatomical locations in MR images of the brain. The method proceeds in three main steps. First, the patient scalp is digitized in physical space with a magnetic-field digitizer, following a specific digitization pattern. Second, a registration process minimizes the mean square distance between those points and a segmented scalp surface extracted from the magnetic resonance image. Following this registration, the physician can

Improving DCIS diagnosis and predictive outcome by applying artificial intelligence.

Breast ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) is a preinvasive lesion that is considered to be a precursor to invasive breast cancer. Nevertheless, not all DCIS will progress to invasion. Current histopathological classification systems are unable to predict which cases will or will not progress, and therefore many women with DCIS may be overtreated. Artificial intelligence (AI) image-based analysis methods have potential to identify and analyze novel features that may facilitate tumor identification, prediction of disease outcome and response to treatment. Indeed, these methods prove promising for a

Application of nonlinear methods to discriminate fractionated electrograms in paroxysmal versus persistent atrial fibrillation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Complex fractionated atrial electrograms (CFAE) may contain information concerning the electrophysiological substrate of atrial fibrillation (AF); therefore they are of interest to guide catheter ablation treatment of AF. Electrogram signals are shaped by activation events, which are dynamical in nature. This makes it difficult to establish those signal properties that can provide insight into the ablation site location. Nonlinear measures may improve information. To test this hypothesis, we used nonlinear measures to analyze CFAE. METHODS: CFAE from several atrial s

Deep learning for chest radiograph diagnosis: A retrospective comparison of the CheXNeXt algorithm to practicing radiologists.

BACKGROUND: Chest radiograph interpretation is critical for the detection of thoracic diseases, including tuberculosis and lung cancer, which affect millions of people worldwide each year. This time-consuming task typically requires expert radiologists to read the images, leading to fatigue-based diagnostic error and lack of diagnostic expertise in areas of the world where radiologists are not available. Recently, deep learning approaches have been able to achieve expert-level performance in medical image interpretation tasks, powered by large network architectures and fueled by the emergence

[Measurement and interpretation of irregular vocal cord fold vibrations].

BACKGROUND: Irregular vibrations of the vocal folds are regarded as a main reason for the common symptom of hoarseness. With real time resolution, they can only be observed using high speed recording techniques (up to 10,000 images/s). METHOD: During the last years, we have developed a recording device and image processing software dedicated to the extraction of vocal fold motion curves from the image series. Irregular vibrations can be understood by using Hirano's "body-cover-model": one vocal fold is assumed to act as a system of two coupled oscillators (the vocal muscle and the epithelium,

Virtual image guided navigation in tumor surgery--technical innovation.

We present a new visualization system for image-guided stereotactic navigation in tumor surgery. The combination of frameless stereotactic localization technology with real-time video processing permits the visualization of medical imaging data as a video overlay during the actual surgical procedure. Virtual computer-generated anatomical structures are displayed intraoperatively in a semi-immersive head-up display. This results in surgical navigation assistance without limiting the judgement of the physician based on the continuous observation of the operating field. The case presented documen
