308 nm-Excimer light together with topical betamethasone valerate in treating alopecia areata.

Excimer light was reported to be effective in treating alopecia areata (AA), as it induces T-cell apoptosis, however its combination with topical steroids in the management of AA still needs to be investigated. The study objectives were to determine the efficacy and safety of combining 308 nm-Excimer light and topical steroid versus either Excimer light or topical steroid alone in treating AA. Thirty AA patients were included, each patient had at least three patches, patches in each patient were randomly classified in to 3 groups. Group I patch: was treated by topical steroid only. Group II pa

Three hundred and eight nanometer excimer light therapy for alopecia universalis that is resistant to other treatments: A clinical study of 11 patients.

Three hundred and eight nanometer excimer light therapy has recently been reported to be effective against patchy alopecia areata (AA) in several clinical studies. However, these studies only included a few patients with severe forms of AA, and all of them exhibited poor outcomes. We further investigated the use of excimer light as a therapeutic option for cases of alopecia universalis (AU) that are resistant to other treatments. Eleven treatment-resistant AU patients were treated with a 308-nm excimer light at 2-week intervals for more than 16 sessions. Four patients achieved good responses a

In vitro responses of neurofibroma fibroblasts, mast cells and Schwann cells obtained from patients with neurofibromatosis 1 to 308-nm excimer light and/or vitamin D3.

Fibroblasts, mast cells and Schwann cells were isolated from neurofibromas of patients with neurofibromatosis 1, and their responses to 308-nm excimer light irradiation and/or vitamin D3 or an analog (tacalcitol; 1,24-dihydroxyvitamin D3 ) were examined in vitro. Excimer light irradiation (300 mJ/cm(2) ) suppressed the growth of all three cell types. Exposure to 10(-7)  mol/L of 1α,25(OH)2 D3 (VD3 ) or tacalcitol suppressed the growth of fibroblasts and mast cells, but not Schwann cells. These results suggest that the different neurofibroma cell types show different responses to VD3 . A combin

Skin directed therapy for mycosis fungoides: a review.

Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a rare neoplasm of epidermotropic CD4+ lymphocytes and represents a majority of all cutaneous T cell lymphomas. Early stage MF is limited to cutaneous patches and plaques that can be treated with topical modalities with high response rates. More aggressive systemic treatment of early disease does not alter survival or cure the disease and could accelerate progression by causing immunosuppression. Topical corticosteroids, mechlorethamine, and carmustine have been the mainstays of early treatment of MF for more than 30 years. More recently, topical formulations of retin

Refractive error in cataract surgery after previous refractive surgery.

Bilateral cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation was performed in a patient after previous photorefractive keratectomy, radial keratotomy (RK) combined with astigmatic keratotomy, and retreatment of RK. Significant hyperopic error was observed after cataract surgery, and the IOLs were eventually exchanged in both eyes. A review of this case found that the refractive error was smaller when a refraction-derived keratometric value was selected for IOL power calculation. Nevertheless, hyperopic error still occurred.
