Consecutive use of mini-implants in the palate to treat skeletal maxillary constriction and Class II malocclusion in an adult case.

This report describes the successful use of two multifunctional mini-implants that were inserted into the palate in the treatment of an 18-year-old woman in whom the maxilla was skeletally narrowed and the molars have migrated mesially on both sides. Three different appliances were used in sequence in the course of treatment: first, an appliance supported by bone and teeth (hybrid hyrax) for surgically-assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME); second, a distalization device supported by mini-implants to achieve molar distalization; and third, a transpalatal arch (TPA) stabilized by mini-impl

Spontaneous Correction of Accentuated Retraction of Maxillary Central Incisors After Autogenous Graft in Midline, Mesialization, and Lingual Torque of Incisor Roots.

In the present clinical case, the authors report the orthodontic treatment of an adult patient with Class II malocclusion with periodontal disease and extensive bone destruction in the anterior region of the median palatine suture. Before orthodontic treatment, the patient presented precarious oral health. The treatment proposed for the case was insertion of an autogenous graft and subsequent orthodontic movement of the teeth to the area of the graft. The results obtained were correction of the malocclusion with significant improvement in gingival retraction and smile esthetics. With this clin

Three-dimensional treatment outcomes in Class II patients with different vertical facial patterns treated with the Herbst appliance.

INTRODUCTION: The aims of this study were to evaluate, using 3-dimensional superimposition techniques, the skeletal changes in Class II subjects with different vertical facial patterns treated with the Herbst appliance and to compare these skeletal changes to those of Class II controls treated with elastics. METHODS: Sixteen Herbst patients who met the inclusion criteria were divided into 2 equal groups based on vertical facial pattern as determined by the Frankfort mandibular plane angle (brachyfacial, ≤22°; mesofacial, 23°-29°) and had cone-beam computed tomographs taken before treatment, 8

Bone-anchored intermaxillary elastics in an asymmetric Class II malocclusion: A case report.

PURPOSE: A 13-year-old male patient, presenting a Class II, division 1 malocclusion and crowding was treated by an innovative technique. METHODS: After rapid palatal expansion by a Hyrax appliance, the teeth were bonded with straightwire brackets. Two miniscrews were inserted, one per side, in the mandibular buccal bone between the roots of the mandibular first molar and the second premolar. On the right side, the miniscrew implant was connected to the hook clamped on a 0.021×0.028″ SS wire with a twisted SS ligature in order to maintain the inclination of the frontal incisors during the Clas

Early vertical correction of the deep curve of Spee.

Even though few technological advancements have occurred in Orthodontics recently, the search for more efficient treatments continues. This paper analyses how to accelerate and improve one of the most arduous phases of orthodontic treatment, i.e., correction of the curve of Spee. The leveling of a deep curve of Spee can happen simultaneously with the alignment phase through a method called Early Vertical Correction (EVC). This technique uses two cantilevers affixed to the initial flexible archwire. This paper describes the force system produced by EVC and how to control its side effects. The E

Interdisciplinary approach for esthetic management of an adult patient with reverse articulation.

Prosthodontic methods to correct anterior reverse articulation (also known as anterior cross-bite) can be extremely challenging. This clinical report describes the interdisciplinary management of an adult female patient with a history of chronic periodontitis who presented with reverse articulation in the left canine region. While the patient desired a quick, highly esthetic solution, she was counseled to first undergo orthodontic treatment. After completion of orthodontics, prosthodontic treatment comprised of bleaching therapy, porcelain veneers, and all-ceramic crowns. Periodontal maintenan

Functional appliance treatment for bilateral condylar fracture in a pediatric patient.

Trauma to the mandible may cause condylar fracture (CF). The prevalence of CF in children is low and treatment must focus on possible long-term effects on the growing facial skeleton and soft tissues. Consequences may include functional disturbances, facial asymmetry, mandibular retrusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and ankylosis. Conservative treatment, including close observation, soft diet, physiotherapy, and functional appliances, is advised in most cases. The purpose of this report was to describe the case of a pediatric female patient with bilateral condylar fracture. Treatment

The use of anorganic bovine bone to correct a residual osseous defect after tooth extrusion: report of case.

This report deals with the clinical treatment of an osseous defect resulting from the extrusion of an impacted canine in a twelve-year-old girl. An apical horizontal root resorption of the adjacent lateral incisor was a related condition to this impaction, influencing the choice of treatment. The bone defect, caused by a guided canine extrusion, was restored by an anorganic bovine bone mineral (Bio-Oss). After a one-year follow-up, the lateral incisor responded vital and showed no discoloration; no progress of the resorption was found. Furthermore, by improving the conduction of new bone forma
