Injuries to the occipito-cervical junction are rare and not easily diagnosed on conventional radiographs. The authors report such a case where the diagnosis was delayed. The patient developed a significant retrophyarngeal haematoma resulting in acute respiratory distress and required emergency endotracheal intubation. Injury is recognised internationally as the major threat to adolescent health. The purpose of this study was to describe the epidemiology of adolescent fatal injury in New Zealand, and to examine opportunities for prevention. National mortality data were searched to identify all 15-19 year-olds, who died from injuries in the period 1986-1995. Leading causes of injury were reviewed in light of known risk factors, injury mortality rates in other industrialised countries, and available prevention strategies. The results showed that injury accounted for 2,095 deaths (72.8 per 100,000 person years)

BACKGROUND: This paper describes a study on the epidemiology of accidents among users of two-wheeled motor vehicles in two Italian cities, Rome and Naples.
METHODS: A surveillance study was conducted, recruiting the victims of accidents among users of two-wheeled motor vehicles, visiting the emergency departments of two Italian hospitals. The registration form includes personal data of the involved person, circumstances of the accident, means of arrival at the hospital, type of vehicles involved, helmet use, and eventually third parties involved, and data on the specific injury diagnosis.

A case of fracture of the hook of the hamate associated with a palmar dislocation of the fifth carpometacarpal joint is described. PROBLEM: Mopeds are a popular transportation mode in Europe and Asia. Moped-related traffic accidents account for a large proportion of crash fatalities. To develop moped-related crash countermeasures, it is important to understand the characteristics of moped-related conflicts.
METHOD: Naturalistic driving study data were collected in Shanghai, China from 36 car drivers. The data included 2,878h and 78,296km driven from 13,149 trips. Moped-car conflicts were identified and examined from the passenger car driver's perspective using kinematic trigger algorithms and manual video reduction.

We report a case of posttraumatic aortic valve regurgitation and pseudoaneurysm of the aortic root diagnosed 22 months after a road traffic accident. The surgical treatment consisted of exclusion of the pseudoaneurysm with direct closure of the entry tear in the right coronary sinus followed by insertion of a Toronto stentless prosthesis (St. Jude Medical, St. Paul, MN). This surgical approach aimed to cover the repaired entry tear ensuring exclusion of the site. Recovery was uneventful and 12 month follow-up was unremarkable.

A case is presented of a motorcyclist who crashed and suffered a fracture-dislocation of the mid-thoracic spine without any neurologic deficit. The injury was discovered 6 weeks after the crash.
