Nipple Localization in Automated Whole Breast Ultrasound Coronal Scans Using Ensemble Learning.

Nipple is a vital landmark in the breast lesion diagnosis. Although there are advanced computer-aided detection (CADe) systems for nipple detection in breast mediolateral oblique (MLO) views of mammogram images, few academic works address the coronal views of breast ultrasound (BUS) images. This paper addresses a novel CADe system to locate the Nipple Shadow Area (NSA) in ultrasound images. Here the Hu Moments and Gray-level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) were calculated through an iterative sliding window for the extraction of shape and texture features. These features are then concatenated and

Predicting sperm production of young dairy bulls using collection history and management factors.

Selection of elite young dairy bulls by using genomic data shortened the generation interval and increased pressure to collect and market germplasm at an early age. The objectives of this study were (1) develop prediction models for daily, weekly, and monthly total sperm (TSp) production from collection history, health status, and management factors, and (2) assess the ability of these models to forecast future TSp production, as well as differences in prediction accuracy by seasonality or age of bull. Data consisted of 43,918 daily processing records from 1,037 Holstein and Jersey bulls betwe

Automating Periodontal bone loss measurement via dental landmark localisation.

PURPOSE: Periodontitis is the sixth most prevalent disease worldwide and periodontal bone loss (PBL) detection is crucial for its early recognition and establishment of the correct diagnosis and prognosis. Current radiographic assessment by clinicians exhibits substantial interobserver variation. Computer-assisted radiographic assessment can calculate bone loss objectively and aid in early bone loss detection. Understanding the rate of disease progression can guide the choice of treatment and lead to early initiation of periodontal therapy. METHODOLOGY: We propose an end-to-end system that in

Mapping Vagus Nerve Stimulation Parameters to Cardiac Physiology using Long Short-term Memory Network.

Vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) is an emerging therapeutic strategy for pathological conditions in a variety of diseases; however, several challenges arise for applying this stimulation paradigm in automated closed-loop control. In this work, we propose a data driven approach for predicting the impact of VNS on physiological variables. We apply this approach on a synthetic dataset created with a physiological model of a rat heart. Through training several neural network models, we found that a long short term memory (LSTM) architecture gave the best performance on a test set. Further, we found t

VirPreNet: a weighted ensemble convolutional neural network for the virulence prediction of influenza A virus using all eight segments.

MOTIVATION: Influenza viruses are persistently threatening public health, causing annual epidemics and sporadic pandemics. The evolution of influenza viruses remains to be the main obstacle in the effectiveness of antiviral treatments due to rapid mutations. Previous work has been investigated to reveal the determinants of virulence of the influenza A virus. To further facilitate flu surveillance, explicit detection of influenza virulence is crucial to protect public health from potential future pandemics. RESULTS: In this article, we propose a weighted ensemble convolutional neural network (

3D convolutional neural networks for stalled brain capillary detection.

Adequate blood supply is critical for normal brain function. Brain vasculature dysfunctions, including stalled blood flow in cerebral capillaries, are associated with cognitive decline and pathogenesis in Alzheimer's disease. Recent advances in imaging technology enabled generation of high-quality 3D images that can be used to visualize stalled blood vessels. However, localization of stalled vessels in 3D images is often required as the first step for downstream analysis. When performed manually, this process is tedious, time-consuming, and error-prone. Here, we describe a deep learning-based

Learning spatiotemporal features of DSA using 3D CNN and BiConvGRU for ischemic moyamoya disease detection.

BACKGROUND: Moyamoya disease (MMD) is a serious intracranial cerebrovascular disease. Cerebral hemorrhage caused by MMD will bring life risk to patients. Therefore, MMD detection is of great significance in the prevention of cerebral hemorrhage. In order to improve the accuracy of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in the diagnosis of ischemic MMD, in this paper, a deep network architecture combined with 3D convolutional neural network (3D CNN) and bidirectional convolutional gated recurrent unit (BiConvGRU) is proposed to learn the spatiotemporal features for ischemic MMD detection. Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation prediction based on morphological variant P-wave analysis with wideband ECG and deep learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is one of the most frequent asymptomatic arrhythmias associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Identifying the susceptibility to AF based on routine or continuous ECG recording is of considerable interest. Despite several P-wave characteristics and skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) linked to AF onset, neither factor has offered accurate predictability. We propose a deep learning enabled method for AF risk prediction. METHODS: We develop a novel MVPNet to predict the upcoming onset of paroxysmal AF. MVPNet combines wavelet-base

Medical recommender systems based on continuous-valued logic and multi-criteria decision operators, using interpretable neural networks.

BACKGROUND: Out of the pressure of Digital Transformation, the major industrial domains are using advanced and efficient digital technologies to implement processes that are applied on a daily basis. Unfortunately, this still does not happen in the same way in the medical domain. For this reason, doctors usually do not have the time or knowledge to evaluate all alternative treatment options for each patient accurately and individually. However, physicians can reduce their workload by using recommender systems, still having every decision under control. In this way, they also get an insight int

Leveraging deep learning to control neural oscillators.

Modulation of the firing times of neural oscillators has long been an important control objective, with applications including Parkinson's disease, Tourette's syndrome, epilepsy, and learning. One common goal for such modulation is desynchronization, wherein two or more oscillators are stimulated to transition from firing in phase with each other to firing out of phase. The optimization of such stimuli has been well studied, but this typically relies on either a reduction of the dimensionality of the system or complete knowledge of the parameters and state of the system. This limits the applic

Mobile Eye-Tracking Data Analysis Using Object Detection via YOLO v4.

Remote eye tracking has become an important tool for the online analysis of learning processes. Mobile eye trackers can even extend the range of opportunities (in comparison to stationary eye trackers) to real settings, such as classrooms or experimental lab courses. However, the complex and sometimes manual analysis of mobile eye-tracking data often hinders the realization of extensive studies, as this is a very time-consuming process and usually not feasible for real-world situations in which participants move or manipulate objects. In this work, we explore the opportunities to use object re

Adopting low-shot deep learning for the detection of conjunctival melanoma using ocular surface images.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the present study was to investigate low-shot deep learning models applied to conjunctival melanoma detection using a small dataset with ocular surface images. METHODS: A dataset was composed of anonymized images of four classes; conjunctival melanoma (136), nevus or melanosis (93), pterygium (75), and normal conjunctiva (94). Before training involving conventional deep learning models, two generative adversarial networks (GANs) were constructed to augment the training dataset for low-shot learning. The collected data were randomly divided into trainin

Interpretable deep learning for the remote characterisation of ambulation in multiple sclerosis using smartphones.

The emergence of digital technologies such as smartphones in healthcare applications have demonstrated the possibility of developing rich, continuous, and objective measures of multiple sclerosis (MS) disability that can be administered remotely and out-of-clinic. Deep Convolutional Neural Networks (DCNN) may capture a richer representation of healthy and MS-related ambulatory characteristics from the raw smartphone-based inertial sensor data than standard feature-based methodologies. To overcome the typical limitations associated with remotely generated health data, such as low subject number

Reducing the Impact of Confounding Factors on Skin Cancer Classification via Image Segmentation: Technical Model Study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown that artificial intelligence achieves similar or better performance than dermatologists in specific dermoscopic image classification tasks. However, artificial intelligence is susceptible to the influence of confounding factors within images (eg, skin markings), which can lead to false diagnoses of cancerous skin lesions. Image segmentation can remove lesion-adjacent confounding factors but greatly change the image representation. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the performance of 2 image classification workflows where images were either segmente

Chromosome-scale inference of hybrid speciation and admixture with convolutional neural networks.

Inferring the frequency and mode of hybridization among closely related organisms is an important step for understanding the process of speciation and can help to uncover reticulated patterns of phylogeny more generally. Phylogenomic methods to test for the presence of hybridization come in many varieties and typically operate by leveraging expected patterns of genealogical discordance in the absence of hybridization. An important assumption made by these tests is that the data (genes or SNPs) are independent given the species tree. However, when the data are closely linked, it is especially i

Temporal patterns of synchrony in a pyramidal-interneuron gamma (PING) network.

Synchronization in neural systems plays an important role in many brain functions. Synchronization in the gamma frequency band (30-100 Hz) is involved in a variety of cognitive phenomena; abnormalities of the gamma synchronization are found in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder. Frequently, the strength of synchronization is not high, and synchronization is intermittent even on short time scales (few cycles of oscillations). That is, the network exhibits intervals of synchronization followed by intervals of desynchronization. Neural circuit dynamics may show different distributions of

Multi-model CNN fusion for sperm morphology analysis.

Infertility is a common disorder affecting 20% of couples worldwide. Furthermore, 40% of all cases are related to male infertility. The first step in the determination of male infertility is semen analysis. The morphology, concentration, and motility of sperm are important characteristics evaluated by experts during semen analysis. Most laboratories perform the tests manually. However, manual semen analysis requires much time and is subject to observer variability during the evaluation. Therefore, computer-assisted systems are required. Additionally, to obtain more objective results, a large a

Star-ECG: Visualization of Electrocardiograms for Arrhythmia and Heart Rate Variability.

Conventional electrocardiograms (ECG) are displayed in one dimension. Reading one-dimensional ECG waveform becomes challenging when one wants to visualize the heart rate variability with naked eye. Some ECG visualization techniques have been proposed. However, they rely on domain knowledge to comprehend the heart rate variability. To improve the readability for patients and non-experts, we introduce Star-ECG, a novel ECG visualization approach. Such approach projects ECG waveforms onto a two-dimensional plane in a circular form. We demonstrate that Star-ECG offers not only easily deciphered vi

The measurement of Cobb angle based on spine X-ray images using multi-scale convolutional neural network.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) is a structural spinal deformity mainly in the coronal plane and is among the most frequent deformities in children, adolescents, and young adults, with an overall prevalence of 0.47-5.2%. The Cobb angle is an objective measure to determine the progression of deformity and plays a critical role in the planning of surgical treatment. However, existing studies suggested that Cobb angle measurement is susceptible to inter- and intra-observer variability, as well as a high variability in the definition of the end vertebra. In this study, we proposed an automat

Recognition of Thyroid Ultrasound Standard Plane Images Based on Residual Network.

Ultrasound is one of the critical methods for diagnosis and treatment in thyroid examination. In clinical application, many reasons, such as large outpatient traffic, time-consuming training of sonographers, and uneven professional level of physicians, often cause irregularities during the ultrasonic examination, leading to misdiagnosis or missed diagnosis. In order to standardize the thyroid ultrasound examination process, this paper proposes using a deep learning method based on residual network to recognize the Thyroid Ultrasound Standard Plane (TUSP). At first, referring to multiple releva
