An integrated approach to assess the molecular mechanisms and cellular effects of environmentally realistic mixtures of microplastics in Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Microplastics pose great biological concern due to their ubiquity and ability to enter food webs. Despite their environmental heterogeneity, most laboratory studies still rely on pristine, single-polymer microplastics that inadequately reflect complex field conditions. We provide an integrated multilevel toxicological assessment in mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed for 14 days to three 20-50 µm microplastics typologies: EPM, Environmental Plastics Mixture, obtained by micronizing field-collected objects of polyethylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polypropylene, polystyrene, and polyvi

Fine 3D free energy map of diffusing small molecules in heterogeneous solid media.

An efficient free energy calculation method is proposed for diffusing small molecules in heterogeneous solid media, such as polymers and inorganic solids, to obtain fine three-dimensional (3D) free energy maps consisting of one million meshes. The free energy of transfer of molecules from vacuum to individual meshes in the media was calculated according to the Widom equation using a new importance sampling method. The method simultaneously samples configurations of thousands of test molecules, each independently following a single-particle canonical distribution. The sampling was also accelera

Revisiting Spigelian hernia with emphasis on diagnostic challenges and outcomes of open mesh repair: a case report of two patients.

BACKGROUND: Spigelian hernia is a rare defect of the anterior abdominal wall, accounting for less than 2% of all abdominal wall hernias. Despite its low incidence, it carries a clinically significant risk of incarceration and strangulation due to its deep interparietal location beneath an intact external oblique aponeurosis, which often delays the diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATIONS: This report presents two surgically treated cases of Spigelian hernia and focuses on the operative outcomes and refinement of the open repair technique. Both patients were men aged 65 and 61 years, respectively, and pre

PM2.5-bound plastic and rubber polymers from waste treatment facilities: Occurrence profiles and evidence of co-exposure to flame retardants.

Atmospheric PM2.5-bound plastic and rubber polymers are increasingly recognized as emerging contaminants amid concerns about inhalation exposure and potential health effects, yet their occurrence at waste treatment facilities remains poorly characterized. This study quantified 12 target polymers in PM2.5 samples collected from four waste treatment facilities (landfill, waste incineration plant, plastic recycling plant, and wastewater treatment plant) and an urban reference site using pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Median total polymer concentrations followed: plasti

Nano-Confined Carbon Channels Enable Efficient Acidic CO2 Electrolysis to Ethylene.

Acidic electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) offers a promising route for carbon utilization by mitigating carbonate formation that commonly occurs in alkaline and neutral electrolytes. However, efficient CO2-to-C2H4 conversion under strongly acidic conditions remains challenging because copper-based catalysts suffer from severe corrosion and competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report a nano-confined-channel-modified copper catalyst fabricated through flash Joule heating-driven rapid pyrolysis of waste polypropylene. The resulting graphitized carbon forms abundan

Boosting Antibacterial Efficacy of Silicon Quantum Dots through Chiral Surface Engineering.

The rise of antibiotic-resistant bacteria poses a severe global health threat, driving the urgent need for alternative antimicrobial strategies. Nanomaterials, particularly silicon quantum dots (SiQDs), offer promising potential due to their multimechanistic antibacterial action and lower risk of inducing resistance. However, the practical application of conventional SiQDs is often constrained by a limited antibacterial efficacy. In this work, chiral SiQDs (D-SiQDs and L-SiQDs) were synthesized via a one-step polymerization method using (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane (APTMS) and d- or l-cyste

Vascular effects of micro- and nanoplastics in humans: Systematic review.

Plastics have been accumulating in the environment for over 100 years and are environmental pollutants already recognized as relevant risk factors for human health, including the cardiovascular system. Plastics break down into smaller particles called microplastics (with diameters ranging from 1 micrometer to 5 millimeters) and nanoplastics (with diameters smaller than 1 micrometer), which are resistant to natural degradation. Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) enter the human body through ingestion, inhalation, dermal penetration, injection, and implantation. MNPs are heterogeneous in their origi

Ingestion of a human-relevant mixture of environmentally sourced microplastics promotes inflammation and tumorigenesis in the mouse colon.

The increasing consumption of plastic in our society has led to the dissemination of microplastics in the environment, which, by diffusing into the food chain and across terrestrial compartments, results in human exposure to a wide diversity of particulate plastics. This study aimed to elucidate the impact of a realistic mixture of microplastics on the colon. Environmental samples composed of the four predominant polymers were cryoground. Irregularly shaped micro-fragments of polypropylene, polyethylene terephthalate, polystyrene, and polyethylene (45-100 μm) were mixed and incorporated into t

Behavioural, metabolic and neuroxidative effects in juvenile Sparus aurata exposed to conventional and biobased microplastics.

Microplastic pollution in marine environments has raised significant concerns. However, it remains unclear whether bioplastic particles are indeed more environmentally-friendly and less noxious to marine species than conventional petroleum-based plastics. This study aimed to adopt a holistic approach (integrating animal behaviour, plasma metabolite profiling, brain histopathology and biochemical markers indicative of neural function and antioxidant responses) to assess the ecotoxicological effects of juvenile gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) orally exposed to petroleum-based (polyethylene ter

Improving the precision and efficiency of an optical telescope array by the piecemeal method.

PURPOSE: To describe the design and initial proof-of-concept of the Japanese Flanged Cord (JFC) method, a novel technique for temporary intraluminal occlusion of non-valved glaucoma drainage devices (GDDs) to prevent postoperative hypotony. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This technical report describes a new occlusion method utilizing a 5-0 polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) or polypropylene monofilament suture. A terminal flange is created on the suture using thermal cautery, functioning as an intraluminal plug. This flanged cord is inserted into the GDD tube to block aqueous flow without tube ligation.

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of PP/UHMWPE Blends: Effects of Component Regulation on Rheological, Mechanical, and Friction-Wear Properties.

Ultrahigh-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), due to its extremely high melt viscosity and poor processing fluidity, severely restricts the forming and processing of the material and its application in engineering scenarios. Therefore, improving its processability while maintaining its excellent wear resistance has become a key scientific issue in the application of this material. In this study, polypropylene (PP) was used as a modification phase, and molecular dynamics simulation methods were employed to investigate the steady-state shear rheological, tensile mechanical, and friction-wear

Human reproductive exposure to microplastics: A multi-technique analytical study of menstrual and amniotic fluids.

Microplastics (MPs) have emerged as a significant public health concern due to their widespread presence in the environment and potential for human exposure through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact. Although MPs have been previously detected in human tissues such as the placenta, blood, and breast milk, their presence in menstrual blood has not been investigated until now. This study aimed to explore the presence and characteristics of MPs in menstrual blood and amniotic fluid, with a focus on their presence in the human reproductive system. Samples were collected using a rigorous pla

Occurrence of Microplastics and Cytotoxic Effects of Organic Extracts from Isolated Mesoplastics in Compost.

Compost application is a widely recommended practice to maintain and improve soil fertility. However, such a practice could be a main entry path for plastic into soil. Accordingly, in the present work, two different compost samples, obtained with and without biochar, were analyzed to investigate how composting can affect the presence of microplastics (MPs). The substrate of both samples (consisting of a mixture of household food waste and animal manure) was also analyzed for comparative purposes. Samples were processed by oxidation, flotation, and filtration. MPs on the filters were observed,

Microplastics in groundwater: An updated systematic review of occurrence, hydrogeological controls, methodological challenges, and regulatory gaps.

Microplastics (MPs) have been detected in groundwater worldwide, yet a robust scientific basis for defining groundwater-specific threshold values is still lacking. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 82 field studies conducted in 28 countries between 2019 and 2026, providing the most comprehensive assessment to date of MP occurrence in groundwater. The findings are organized across eight hydrogeological settings, all of which contained MPs, demonstrating that none of the groundwater environments investigated to date is free from contamination. Reported average concentrations span

Deep Learning-Aided SERS Detection of Microplastics in Water Samples with a Hierarchically Porous Gold Sponge Substrate.

The pervasive occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments presents growing challenges for environmental monitoring. Conventional MP detection methods often require extensive pretreatment and struggle to differentiate mixed polymer compositions in complex matrices. Here, we present a pretreatment-free analytical method that integrates an electrostatically functionalized surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate with an interpretable deep learning framework. A hierarchically porous gold sponge modified with poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) facilitates efficient elect

Rapid On-Site Analysis of Psychotropic Drugs in Dried Blood Spots by Capillary-in-Capillary Electrospray Ionization (DBS-CC-ESI) Miniature Mass Spectrometry.

Therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) of psychotropic agents is essential for optimizing therapeutic efficacy and minimizing adverse effects. However, conventional liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) workflows are poorly suited for point-of-care applications due to labor-intensive sample preparation, prolonged turnaround times, and dependence on centralized analytical laboratories. Here, we present a rapid, on-site analytical platform that integrates dried blood spot (DBS) sampling with a modified capillary-in-capillary electrospray ionization (CC-ESI) source coupled to a min

Supramolecular Structural Variations in iPP/ZnO Nanocomposites: Effect on Optical and Dielectric Performance.

This study investigates the impact of melt-cooling rate on the structural, optical, and electrical properties of isotactic polypropylene (iPP) nanocomposites containing wurtzite-type zinc oxide (ZnO) nanocrystals. The nanocomposites were synthesized via a solution-blending and hot-pressing method, followed by cooling under three distinct modes: slow cooling, ice-water quenching, and liquid-nitrogen quenching. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed that slow cooling resulted in the formation of both α- and γ-phases in the iPP matrix, whereas rapid cooling produced only the α-phase. Atomic-fo

Double network crosslinked antibacterial and antioxidant cellulose-based hydrogel capable of healing wound for protecting open abdomen.

Open abdomen (OA) is a life-saving surgical intervention commonly performed in patients with severe pancreatitis, intra-abdominal infection, or major trauma. However, abdominal exposure after OA inevitably leads to continuous fluid and heat loss, making temporary abdominal closure (TAC) indispensable in these cases. Conventional materials, such as polypropylene (PP) mesh, can prevent abdominal wall retraction. However, they may cause intestinal abrasions, which can lead to enteroatmospheric fistulas. Thus, the development of wound dressings that combine structural support and bioactivity is hi
