A role for the Kolliker-Fuse nucleus in cholinergic modulation of breathing at night during wakefulness and NREM sleep.

For many years, acetylcholine has been known to contribute to the control of breathing and sleep. To probe further the contributions of cholinergic rostral pontine systems in control of breathing, we designed this study to test the hypothesis that microdialysis (MD) of the muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine into the pontine respiratory group (PRG) would decrease breathing more in animals while awake than while in NREM sleep. In 16 goats, cannulas were bilaterally implanted into rostral pontine tegmental nuclei (n = 3), the lateral (n = 3) or medial (n = 4) parabrachial nuclei, or the Köll

[Case of multiple sclerosis with WEBINO syndrome].

We report a 50-year-old man presenting with wall-eyed bilateral internuclear opthalmoplegia (WEBINO) syndrome. He had suffered from progressive double vision and tetraparesis, and been diagnosed as secondary progressive multiple sclerosis (MS). On admission, he presented with bilateral facial nerve palsy, pseudobulber palsy, and spastic tetraparesis, predominantly on the right side. Bilateral adduction deficits were noted on horizontal gaze, together with nystagmus of abducting eyes. On primary eye position, the right eye was fixed in the midposition, while the left eye was exotropic. The righ

Massive pontine hemorrhagic transformation associated with an anticoagulant for basilar artery occlusion.

Symptomatic hemorrhagic transformation is common in supratentorial and cerebellar infarction, but is rare in brainstem infarction. It is seldom reported in basilar artery occlusion. Although early arterial recanalization by thrombolytic agent has became the new trend of treatment, for some neurologists anticoagulant is still a conventional alternative treatment of basilar artery occlusion, especially in longer-existing ischemic deficits. We report a case of massive pontine hemorrhage associated with enoxaparin (low-molecular-weight heparin) treatment for basilar artery occlusion. On the basis

Convergence substitution in pontine tegmental hemorrhage: an observation with Frenzel goggles.

We report a case in which convergence movement was substituted for bilateral horizontal gaze palsy due to a pontine tegmental hemorrhage. When visual fixation was suppressed with Frenzel goggles (FG), substituted convergence movements were prominent in our patient. The observation suggests that both vergence eye movements and horizontal gaze movements act synergistically and lesioning of the version system results in overactivity of the convergence system after a pontine hemorrhage. Furthermore, it may be worth using FG in the observation of substituted eye movements in patients with horizonta

Motor aprosodia due to isolated brainstem stroke in a young woman.

A 21 year old woman presented with coma and quadriparesis secondary to bilateral pontine infarction. Three weeks later motor aprosodia was the most notable neurological finding apart from mild asymmetric limb weakness. No other supratentorial lesion was noted on initial and subsequent multimodality magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance perfusion imaging revealed right frontotemporal hypoperfusion. This is the first report of aprosodia with an isolated brainstem lesion.

Topographical distribution of pontocerebellar microbleeds.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Microbleeds (MBs) visualized by use of T2*-weighted gradient-echo MR imaging are pathologic blood-breakdown products after tiny cerebral hemorrhages. The topographic distribution of the lesions has not been compared with that of symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the distribution of MBs in the pontocerebellar region and to compare it with the distribution of ICHs reported in the literature. METHODS: We examined 164 consecutive hypertensive patients with ischemic infarction or spontaneous ICH over a 1-year period. Two e

Pontine hemorrhage after frontal craniotomy. Report of a case.

This report describes the complication of pontine hemorrhage in a patient who had undergone supratentorial craniotomy for treatment of a frontal intracerebral hematoma. A literature review revealed no previous cases of pontine hemorrhage in this clinical scenario. Abnormal findings on neurological examination in the early postoperative period should alert the physician to the possibility of this complication.

Non-familial olivopontocerebellar atrophy combined with late onset Alzheimer's disease: a clinico-pathological case report.

A 76-year-old woman with olivopontocerebellar atrophy (OPCA) presented with progressive intellectual deterioration. She showed cerebellar ataxia and muscle atrophy and weakness, and gradually developed generalized dementia with visuospatial disturbance. An autopsy revealed numerous senile plaques (SPs), neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) and neuropil threads particularly in the CA1, subiculum and entorhinal cortex and to a lesser degree in the cerebral neocortex shown by immunostaining and specific silver impregnation techniques. The nucleus basalis of Meynert had numerous NFTs with fibrillary gli

Salient anatomic features of the cortico-ponto-cerebellar pathway.

Recent studies of the primate corticopontine projection show that the neocerebellum--in addition to connections from motor and sensory areas--receives connections from various association areas of the cerebral cortex, some of which are thought to be primarily engaged in cognitive tasks. The quantities of such connections in relation to those from more clearly motor-related parts of the cortex need to be more precisely determined, however. Furthermore, the anatomic data on origin of corticopontine fibers needs to be supplemented with physiological experiments to clarify their functional propert

[Vitality and possible causes of punctate hemorrhages in the lower brain stem of a burned corpse].

The case under discussion of a burn victim with dot haemorrhages into the caudal brain stem confirms other observations which have only rarely been published that these dot haemorrhages are not necessarily the sequelae of an intra vitam trauma. A reliable assessment of such cases demands a comprehensive pathologic and if possible neuropathologic autopsy including follow-up investigation considering police inquiry.

Fatal pontine hemorrhage after podiatric surgery. A case report.

The authors present a case of massive fatal pontine hemorrhage as a complication of hypertension in a patient treated for an infected diabetic ulcer. The podiatric physician must be aware of the risks associated with concomitant medical problems such as hypertension and ensure that proper therapeutic measures are taken to avoid the potential for catastrophic complications.

Midpontine tegmentum infarction with "one-and-a-half syndrome" demonstrated by magnetic resonance imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a small midpontine tegmentum infarction in a patient with Fisher's one-and-a-half syndrome. The lesion was extremely restricted to the unilateral paramedian area of the midpontine tegmentum involving both the paramedian pontine reticular formation and medial longitudinal fasciculus. The typical form of this syndrome, that is, a combination of lateral gaze palsy and unilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia, can be caused by a midpontine lesion.

[Study on argyrophilic inclusions of multisystem atrophy (Oppenheimer)].

UNLABELLED: Non-hereditary olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA) and striato-nigral degeneration (SND) have been looked upon as a single disease entity called multisystem atrophy (MSA) by Oppenheimer. This study revealed that both intracytoplasmic argyrophilic inclusions (AI) in pontine neurons and glial (argyrophilic) cytoplasmic inclusions (GCIs) widely distributed in the CNS are characteristics of MSA. MATERIALS: a) 12 cases with MSA, b) 16 cases with autosomal dominant (AD) form of spinocerebellar degeneration (SCD): AD form of OPCA 5 cases, Joseph disease 4 cases, AD-dentatorubropallidol

Neurotrophic trigeminal syndrome after pontine stroke.

The present study describes a patient, aged 72 yrs, with pontine crossed syndrome, displaying ipsilateral to the lesion a syndrome of cranial nerves V, VI, VII, VIII, on the right; a right neocerebellar syndrome; anhidrosis in the right hemibody; contralateral to the lesion: thermoalgic anesthesia with hyperhidrosis in the left hemibody. Concomitant with the pontine lesion, the patient developed torpid trophic ulcerations all over the right hemiface which, in the course of one year, became deformed, retractile, depigmented of hyperpigmented scars, the erosion being so deep at the level of the
