Dentigerous cyst associated with multiple mesiodens: a case report.

Dentigerous cyst is a developmental odontogenic cyst, which apparently develops by accumulation of fluid between reduced enamel epithelium and the tooth crown of an unerupted tooth. When observed with erupted and complete dentition the diagnosis is a surprise; as about 95% of dentigerous cysts involve the permanent dentition and only 5% are associated with supernumerary teeth. The usual age of clinical presentation of dentigerous cyst due to supernumerary tooth is during the first four decades. Mesiodens is a supernumerary tooth situated between the maxillary central incisors. More frequently

Jaw cyst-Basal cell nevus-Bifid rib syndrome: a case report.

Jaw cyst-Basal cell nevus-Bifid rib syndrome or Gorlin-Goltz syndrome involves multiple organ system. The most common findings include multiple odontogenic keratocysts in the jaws and basal cell nevus on the skin that have an early age onset. These multiple odontogenic keratocysts warrant aggressive treatment at the earliest because of the damage and possible complications associated with them. Recurrence in these lesions is the most characteristic feature that has to be taken in consideration while explaining the prognosis to the patient. A case report of a child affected with Gorlin-Goltz sy

Crouzons syndrome: a case report.

Human skull is made up of many bone joints connected by sutures. The sutures fuse in later life after the complete growth of the brain. If any of these sutures closes early, it may interfere with the normal growth of the brain. The developing brain may exert pressure on the skull and may grow in the direction of the other open sutures. Premature sutural fusion may occur alone or together with other anomalies, making up various syndromes. Crouzons syndrome is an example of such a syndrome that is associated with premature synostosis of the sutures of the skull. Presented in this article is a ca

Management of dentoalveolar injuries in children: a case report.

Children aged 6-15 years old experience more injuries to their teeth and the injuries sustained are more serious as evidenced by a higher percentage of luxations, avulsions, fractures and dislocations. The mandible is the most frequently fractured facial bone and mandibular alveolar injuries have been reported to range between 8.1-50.6%. Those with mandibular or midface fractures have a higher incidence of associated chest, extremity, abdomen and cervical spine injuries. The growing patient with facial injuries presents the clinician with a series of thought-provoking circumstances. Dentoalveo

Clinical and intraoral findings of a patient with tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome type I.

Tricho-rhino-phalangeal syndrome (TRPS) is a rare and an autosomal dominant disorder having the following characteristics: slowly growing sparse hair, medially thick and laterally thin eyebrows, bulbous tip of the nose, long flat philtrum and thin upper lip with vermilion border, protruding ears, cone-shaped epiphyses and swelling. Our report intends to introduce TRPS to the dental literature and to present oral, clinical and radiological data of a patient with TRPS. A rare association of supernumerary teeth was also diagnosed and one of them was extracted as it impeded on the eruption path of

Dentigerous cysts of anterior maxilla in a young child: a case report.

Dentigerous cysts are the most common bony lesions of the jaws in children. It is one of the most prevalent types of odontogenic cysts associated with an erupted or developing tooth, particularly the mandibular third molars; the other teeth that are commonly affected are, in order of frequency, the maxillary canines, the maxillary third molars and, rarely, the central incisor. Radiographically, the cyst appears as ovoid well-demarcated unilocular radiolucency with a sclerotic border. The present case report describes the surgical enucleation of a dentigerous cyst involving the permanent maxill

Permanent molars: delayed development and eruption.

Delayed development and eruption of all the permanent molars is a rare phenomenon, which can cause disturbance in the developing occlusion. The eruption of permanent first and second molars is very important for the coordination of facial growth and for providing sufficient occlusal support for undisturbed mastication. In the case described, the first permanent molars were delayed in their development and were seen erupting at the age of nine and a half years. Severe disparity between the left and the right side of the dentition with respect to the rate of development of molars were also prese

Early childhood caries and dental plaque among 1-3-year-olds in Tehran, Iran.

The association between plaque and caries in older children and adults has been poor, however, some studies show that there may be a relationship in younger children. The aim was to study the relationships between dental caries and dental plaque among 12-36-month-olds in Tehran, Iran. A cross-sectional study among a stratified random sample of 504 children aged one to three years from 18 public health centres in Tehran. Mothers were interviewed about their child's date and order of birth, gender, primary caregiver, the mother's age and the educational level of both parents. Dental examination

Long term results of mandibular distraction.

Mandibular distraction osteogenesis has become a popular surgical modality due to its many advantages over conventional orthognathic surgical procedures. However, in spite of the technique having been used for over 15 years, no concrete long term results are available regarding the stability of results. We discuss the various studies which have reported either in favour or against the stablility of results after distraction. We report a series of 6 cases (3 unilateral and 3 bilateral distraction) where distraction was carried out before puberty and followed them up to seven years after removal

Congenital epulis - congenital granular cell lesion: a case report.

Neumann first described congenital epulis (CE) of newborn in 1871. CE occurs at birth and has a striking predilection for females. It is most frequently located on the anterior maxillary alveolar ridge. CE clinically appears as a pedunculated protuberant mass. In cases with large lesions mechanical oral and nasal obstruction can impair fetal deglutition and neonatal respiratory efforts resulting in polyhydramnios prenatally or respiratory impairment postnatally. Histologically CE shows characteristic large cells with granular cytoplasm and spindle cells resembling fibroblasts. The exact histio

Dens evaginatus of anterior teeth (talon cusp) associated with other odontogenic anomalies.

Depending on tooth location, usually, dens evaginatus describes an anomaly of posterior teeth and talon cusp as an anomaly of anterior teeth. From the standpoint of developmental, morphological and histological considerations dens evaginatus is a more acceptable term to use and talon cusp should be considered as a subset of dens evaginatus. It mostly occurs as an isolated finding rather than an integral part of any disorder. Two cases of dens evaginatus along with other dental anomalies are reported.

Aberrant talon cusps: report of two cases.

Talon cusp is an uncommon anomaly seen both in primary and permanent dentition. In most instances they are associated with other clinical problems such as occlusal interferences, poor esthetics and caries susceptibility. Management of such instances requires a comprehensive knowledge of the clinical entity as well as the problems associated with it. Here, we present two cases of talon cusps.

Aneurysmal bone cyst of the coronoid process of the mandible.

A rare case of aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) located in the coronoid process of the mandible in a 12-year-old girl is presented. Treatment consisted of excision of the lesion through preauricular, submandibular and intraoral approach. An access osteotomy distal to second molar region was required to gain access to medial side of the coronoid process. To our knowledge, this is the third case of an aneurysmal bone cyst of the coronoid process of mandible. While examining a patient with a large expansile intrabony jaw cavity with thin peripheral bone, which is filled with blood without presence of b

Mineral trioxide aggregate as a pulpotomy agent in primary molars: an in vivo study.

The retention of pulpally involved deciduous tooth in a healthy state until the time of normal exfoliation remains to be one of the challenges for Pedodontists. A scientific noise has been generated about several materials some of which have been popular pulpotomy medicaments. Concerns have been raised about the toxicity and potential carcinogenicity of these materials, and alternatives have been proposed to maintain the partial pulp vitality, however to date no material has been accepted as an ideal pulpotomy agent. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is a biocompatible material which provides a
