Feasibility study of a parent-driven intervention for youth with Down syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome present with behavioural and emotional difficulties, including noncompliance, rule-breaking, emotion dysregulation and delays in executive functioning. Few behavioural interventions have been designed specifically for children with Down syndrome. The Research Units in Behavioral Intervention (RUBI) Parent Training for Disruptive Behaviors is a structured empirically supported parent training programme developed for caregivers of children with autism. This feasibility trial explored the feasibility and acceptability of an abbreviated RUBI intervention wit

COMT Val158Met polymorphism protects the impact of a mother's history of childhood trauma on emotional and behavioural problems in preschool children.

Childhood trauma has a well-established negative impact on mental health outcomes across the lifespan. Cumulative evidence suggests an intergenerational transmission of trauma to descendants. In this way, considering the child's COMT Val158Met (rs4680: G > A) variant, the study aims to investigate the interactive effect of maternal childhood trauma on the emotional/behavioural problems of their offspring in preschoolers age (4-5 and 11 years old) from a population-based dyad of pregnant adolescent women. The behaviour problems of 310 children were assessed using the Child Behaviour Checklist (

Parents' perceptions of risk and protective factors for problematic sexual behaviour in young Korean individuals with developmental disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on problematic sexual behaviour (PSB) in youth with developmental disabilities in South Korea. METHOD: Sixty-one parents of children with intellectual disabilities or autism spectrum disorder (aged 13-30) reported children's PSB and emotional, behavioural, cognitive, and interpersonal factors. The frequency of PSB in children with developmental disabilities was verified, and various factors' effects on PSB were examined through multiple linear regression analysis. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in PSB levels between children based on sex and age

Friendly Faces: Characteristics of Children and Adolescents With Repeat Visits to a Specialized Child Psychiatric Emergency Program.

OBJECTIVES: Pediatric mental health emergency department (ED) visits continue to rise with 19% to 62% of youth presenting to the ED ultimately returning for a mental health-related complaint. To better understand the needs of children returning to the ED, this study examines the clinical, demographic, and environmental factors associated with revisits to a dedicated child psychiatric ED. METHODS: Clinical factors, home environment, and mental health service utilization of 885 children presenting to a dedicated child psychiatric ED over a 1-year period were abstracted by retrospective chart re

Dimension- and context-specific expression of preschoolers' disruptive behaviors associated with prenatal tobacco exposure.

OBJECTIVE: Precise phenotypic characterization of prenatal tobacco exposure (PTE)-related disruptive behavior (DB) that integrates nuanced measures of both exposures and outcomes is optimal for elucidating underlying mechanisms. Using this approach, our goals were to identify dimensions of DB most sensitive to PTE prior to school entry and assess contextual variation in these dimensions. METHODS: A community obstetric sample of N = 369 women (79.2% lifetime smokers; 70.2% pregnancy smokers) from two Midwestern cities were assessed for PTE using cotinine-calibrated interview-based reports at 1

Do Identity Processes and Psychosocial Problems Intertwine with Each Other? Testing the Directionality of Between- and Within-Person Associations.

As forming and evaluating commitments are stressful processes, adolescents who worry about their identity may exhibit psychosocial problems. However, there is a lack of prospective research regarding the direction of associations between the processes of identity and psychosocial problems in the future domain. This study examined the direction of relationships between future-oriented identity processes and psychosocial problems based on a five-dimensional identity process model. A total of 347 Japanese 14-year-old adolescents (53.3% female) participated in a three-wave longitudinal study with

Do Males and Females Conceptualise Work and Social Impairment Differently Following Treatment for Different Mental Health Problems?

The Work and Social Adjustment Scale (WSAS) is used by psychiatric nurses for screening and evaluating patients' treatment outcomes for a variety of mental health problems. This study investigated longitudinal and gender measurement invariance of WSAS using structural equation modeling within a help-seeking problem gambling sample (n=445), and an intervention program for depression and anxiety sample (n=444). The concept of functional impairment was defined by all WSAS items in males and females at pre- and post-treatment assessments. These findings confirm that the WSAS is a robust and effica

Psychometric properties of the Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised Short-Form in a South African population.

The Social Problem Solving Inventory-Revised Short-Form (SPSI-R:SF) has been used in several countries to identify problem-solving deficits among clinical and general populations in order to guide cognitive-behavioural interventions. Yet, very few studies have evaluated its psychometric properties. Three language versions of the questionnaire were administered to a general population sample comprising 1000 participants (771 English-, 178 Afrikaans- and 101 Xhosa-speakers). Of these participants, 210 were randomly selected to establish test-retest reliability (70 in each language). Principal co

Rumination, mood and social problem-solving in major depression.

BACKGROUND: Ruminating when depressed is thought to lower mood and impair problem-solving, while distraction is thought to alleviate mood and assist problem-solving. The present study investigates each of these proposals using both naturally occurring and experimentally induced rumination and distraction in a sample of patients with major depression. METHOD: Thirty-six patients with major depression and 36 control participants were randomly allocated to either a rumination or distraction induction condition. Levels of trait rumination and distraction were measured at baseline, mood and proble

Overt and covert parental conflict and adolescent problems: observed marital interaction in clinic and nonclinic families.

When adolescents behave in socially unacceptable ways, overt interparental conflict is widely held to be the cause. Empirical studies, however, have been inconsistent in supporting this assumption. Some researchers therefore have speculated that covert conflict also plays a role. In the current observational study, evidence was found that both overt parental conflict and some forms of covert conflict play roles. During problem-solving family discussions, parents of adolescents whom they had brought into an outpatient clinic for treatment overtly disagreed with each other significantly more oft

Alexithymia as a mediator of the associations between child maltreatment and internalizing and externalizing behaviors in adolescence.

Child maltreatment is a global concern that profoundly affects individuals throughout their lives. This study investigated the relationships between various forms of child maltreatment and behavior problems involving internalization and externalization during adolescence. Data obtained from a diverse sample of 1802 Canadians aged 14-18 years was used to examine the mediating role of alexithymia-a difficulty in recognizing and expressing emotions-in these associations. Results indicated that adolescents who experienced sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and exposure to intimate partner violence (IP

The risks for late adolescence of early adolescent marijuana use.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to assess the relation of early adolescent marijuana use to late adolescent problem behaviors, drug-related attitudes, drug problems, and sibling and peer problem behavior. METHODS: African American (n = 627) and Puerto Rican (n = 555) youths completed questionnaires in their classrooms initially and were individually interviewed 5 years later. Logistic regression analysis estimated increases in the risk of behaviors or attitudes in late adolescence associated with more frequent marijuana use in early adolescence. RESULTS: Early adolescent marijuana …

Sex differences in the behavior of children with the 22q11 deletion syndrome.

High rates of psychiatric impairment in adults with 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11DS, also referred to as DiGeorge or velocardiofacial syndrome) suggest that behavioral trajectories of children with 22q11DS may provide critical etiologic insights. Past findings that report Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) diagnoses are extremely variable; moreover, sex differences in behavior have not yet been examined. Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) ratings from 82 children, including 51 with the 22q11DS and 31 control siblings, were analyzed. Strikingly consistent with rates of psychiatric impairment

Academic achievement and psychological adjustment in short children. The National Cooperative Growth Study.

Limited information is available on the educational and behavioral functioning of short children. Through 27 participating medical centers, we administered a battery of psychologic tests to 166 children referred for growth hormone (GH) treatment (5 to 16 years) who were below the third percentile for height (mean height = -2.7 SD). The sample consisted of 86 children with isolated growth-hormone deficiency (GHD) and 80 children with idiopathic short stature (ISS). Despite average intelligence, absence of significant family dysfunction, and advantaged social background, a large number of childr

Reinforcement Learning-Based Approach for Minimizing Energy Loss of Driving Platoon Decisions.

Reinforcement learning (RL) methods for energy saving and greening have recently appeared in the field of autonomous driving. In inter-vehicle communication (IVC), a feasible and increasingly popular research direction of RL is to obtain the optimal action decision of agents in a special environment. This paper presents the application of reinforcement learning in the vehicle communication simulation framework (Veins). In this research, we explore the application of reinforcement learning algorithms in a green cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) platoon. Our aim is to train member vehic
