A prospective randomized controlled trial evaluating alcohol on loudness perception in cochlear implant users.

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the effects of alcohol on the psychophysical responses in patients with cochlear implants. This has not been previously studied. It was also hoped to provide information that could suggest possible sites of action of the known effects of alcohol on the auditory pathway. DESIGN: A prospective randomized placebo-controlled trial, with full ethical approval. PARTICIPANTS: Eight successful cochlear implant users were selected, of whom two had bilateral implants which were tested separately. In total 10 cochlear implants were tested. INTERVENTION: Alco

Neural systems supporting timing and chronometric counting: an FMRI study.

At least two strategies are available to humans for estimating multisecond intervals. One depends on an interval timing system that is common to many species. The other is the language-based strategy of chronometric counting. These two strategies are easily distinguished by the psychophysical properties of their behavioral correlates: counting supports substantially more precise estimates than are possible using the more general interval timing system. The present study investigates the neural systems that underlie the execution of these different strategies. Eighteen adults reproduced a 16-s

Nystagmus testing in intoxicated individuals.

BACKGROUND: Law enforcement officers routinely conduct psychophysical tests to determine if an impaired driver may be intoxicated or in need of medical assistance. Testing includes assessment of eye movements, using the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus (HGN) and Vertical Gaze Nystagmus (VGN) tests, which are conducted at roadside by patrol officers. These tests previously have been validated when the subject is placed in a standing posture with head upright. However, certain conditions require that the subject be tested while seated or supine. Under these conditions, Positional Alcohol Nystagmus (PAN

Coherent motion threshold measurements for M-cell deficit differ for above- and below-average readers.

BACKGROUND: Research during the past 20 years has influenced the management of diagnosis and treatment of children identified as having learning-related vision problems. The intent of this study is to determine whether coherent motion threshold testing can distinguish better-than-average non-disabled (ND) readers from those who are moderately reading disabled (RD) among sixth-grade students. METHOD: A sample of 23 better-than-average non-disabled readers (> or = 80th percentile) and 27 moderately disabled readers (< or = 32nd percentile) were identified using a standardized reading comprehens

Variation in visual acuity within pigmented, and between pigmented and albino rat strains.

Many researchers assume that laboratory rats have poor vision, and accordingly, that they need not consider differences in the visual function of rats as a consequence of strain or experience. Currently, it is not specifically known whether rat domestication has negatively affected the visual function of laboratory rat strains, what the effects of strain albinism are on rat visual function, or whether there are strain differences in the visual function of laboratory rats that are independent of pigmentation. In order to address these questions, we measured psychophysically the vertical grating

Successful pregnancies following an egg donation program in women with previously treated Hodgkin's disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: In order to draw attention not only to patients affected by a neoplasia, but also to those who may have problems of sterility, we describe six women affected by Hodgkin's disease who had precocious menopause due to chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy but who were safely delivered of children. These pregnancies were achieved through oocyte donation, in vitro fertilization and intrauterine embryo transfer or oocyte intracytoplasmic insemination. DESIGN AND METHODS: During natural or iatrogenic menopause, the uterus preserves its capacity to respond to steroidal hormones

The coeliac iceberg in Italy. A multicentre antigliadin antibodies screening for coeliac disease in school-age subjects.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that coeliac disease (CD) is one of the commonest, life-long disorders in Italy. The aims of this multicentre work were: (a) to establish the prevalence of CD on a nationwide basis; and (b) to characterize the CD clinical spectrum in Italy. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifteen centres screened 17,201 students aged 6-15 years (68.6% of the eligible population) by the combined determination of serum IgG- and IgA-antigliadin antibody (AGA) test; 1289 (7.5%) were IgG and/or IgA-AGA positive and were recalled for the second-level investigation; 111 of them met the crite

Retronasal or internasal olfaction can mediate odor-guided behaviors in newborn mice.

Studies of olfactory deprivation have most frequently used unilateral naris occlusion to effect deprivation. Recent psychophysical evidence suggests that adult rodents with either acute or chronic naris occlusion show little decrement in olfactory ability. In this study the effect of naris occlusion coupled with ipsilateral or contralateral olfactory bulb deafferentation on odor-guided behaviors was tested in neonatal mice. Animals that received bilateral bulbectomy or control manipulation were also included. In Experiment 1, olfactory lesions were produced by bulb aspiration on the second day

[Fundus-controlled microperimetry with the scanning laser ophthalmoscope in macular diseases].

BACKGROUND: Scanning laser microperimetry allows focal sensitivity testing of any localization of the retina under direct visual control. Physiological or involuntary fixation shifts can be corrected by manual fundus-tracking. METHODS: For static fundus-controlled microperimetry we used a confocal scanning laser ophthalmoscope equipped with a helium-neon laser as light source for background illumination and for generating the stimuli by acousto-optic modulation. Fundus imaging was achieved by an infrared diode laser scanning synchronous with the helium-neon laser. In comparison computerized s

Perceptual stabilization is weaker in older adults and correlates with spatial suppression of motion.

Spatial suppression and perceptual stabilization are two distinct aspects of motion processing that reduce the influence of redundant motion signals to enhance behaviorally relevant motion. Spatial suppression reduces sensitivity to large, uniform background motion, whereas perceptual stabilization compensates for global retinal motion arising from involuntary eye movements during fixation. Although both mechanisms reduce the influence of redundant motion, it remains unclear whether they are behaviorally related. Comparing younger and older adults provides an opportunity to examine this relati

Disease-Related, Nondisease-Related, and Situational Catastrophizing in Sickle Cell Disease and Its Relationship With Pain.

UNLABELLED: Catastrophizing is a potent psychological modulator of pain across several chronic pain populations; yet despite evidence that patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) catastrophize more than patients with other chronic pain conditions, previous research indicates that catastrophizing is not related to sickle cell pain after controlling for relevant covariates such as depression. Recent research suggests that pain-related catastrophizing should be assessed across pain contexts (eg, dispositional and situational). In this study, we measured disease-specific, general non-disease-relat

Central circuitry responsible for the divergent sympathetic responses to tonic muscle pain in humans.

Experimentally induced tonic muscle pain evokes divergent muscle vasoconstrictor responses, with some individuals exhibiting a sustained increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), and others a sustained decrease. These patterns cannot be predicted from an individual's baseline physiological or psychological measures. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the different muscle sympathetic responses to tonic muscle pain were associated with differential changes in regional brain activity. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the brain was performed concurrently wi

Neural correlates of taste perception in congenital blindness.

Sight is undoubtedly important for the perception and the assessment of the palatability of tastants. Although many studies have addressed the consequences of visual impairment on food selection, feeding behavior, eating habits and taste perception, nothing is known about the neural correlates of gustation in blindness. In the current study we examined brain responses during gustation using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). We scanned nine congenitally blind and 14 age- and sex-matched blindfolded sighted control subjects, matched in age, gender and body mass index (BMI), while the

Predicting Subjective Affective Salience from Cortical Responses to Invisible Object Stimuli.

The affective value of a stimulus substantially influences its potency to gain access to awareness. Here, we sought to elucidate the neural mechanisms underlying such affective salience in a combined behavioral and fMRI experiment. Healthy individuals with varying degrees of spider phobia were presented with pictures of spiders and flowers suppressed from view by continuous flash suppression. Applying multivoxel pattern analysis, we found that the average time that spider stimuli took relative to flowers to gain access to awareness in each participant could be decoded from fMRI signals evoked

Central fatigue induced by short-lasting finger tapping and isometric tasks: A study of silent periods evoked at spinal and supraspinal levels.

The neural substrates of fatigue induced by muscular activity have been addressed in depth in relation to isometric tasks. For these activities, when fatigue develops, it has been noted that the duration of the silent periods (SPs) increases in response to both transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) of primary motor cortex or electric cervicomedullary stimulation (CMS). However, fatigue is known to be task-dependent and the mechanisms giving rise to a decrease in motor performance during brief, fast repetitive tasks have been less studied. We hypothesized that fatigue induced by repetitive fa

The lateral prefrontal cortex mediates the hyperalgesic effects of negative cognitions in chronic pain patients.

UNLABELLED: Although high levels of negative affect and cognitions have been associated with greater pain sensitivity in chronic pain conditions, the neural mechanisms mediating the hyperalgesic effect of psychological factors in patients with pain disorders are largely unknown. In this cross-sectional study, we hypothesized that 1) catastrophizing modulates brain responses to pain anticipation and 2) anticipatory brain activity mediates the hyperalgesic effect of different levels of catastrophizing in fibromyalgia (FM) patients. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we scanned the brai

An integrated face-body representation in the fusiform gyrus but not the lateral occipital cortex.

Faces and bodies are processed by distinct category-selective brain areas. Neuroimaging studies have so far presented isolated faces and headless bodies, and therefore little is known on whether and where faces and headless bodies are grouped together to one object, as they appear in the real world. The current study examined whether a face presented above a body are represented as two separate images or as an integrated face-body representation in face and body-selective brain areas by employing a fMRI competition paradigm. This paradigm has been shown to reveal higher fMRI response to sequen

Parallactic movement beats binocularity in the presence of external visual noise.

PURPOSE: Binocular vision provides a considerable advantage over monocular vision when stationary particles partly obstruct the view. Such situations occur in real life, e.g., when drivers are trying to identify objects through a windshield dotted with snowflakes. In the process of driving, any bumpiness of the road will bring about a parallactic movement of particles on the windshield with respect to the visual object. We investigated whether this parallactic movement diminishes the advantage of binocular over monocular vision. METHODS: Using computer graphics, we simulated a driving situati
