The utility of digital templating in Total Hip Arthroplasty with Crowe type II and III dysplastic hips.

With the superiority of digital imaging, conventional preoperative acetate templating is gradually being replaced by digital templating in total hip arthroplasty (THA). The purpose of this study was to assess the utility of digital templating for patients with Crowe type II and III dysplastic hips. In this study, 41 THA patients with Crowe type II or III dysplastic hips and 48 THA patients with other primary diseases were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were fitted with cementless prostheses in 2008. For the THA patients with dysplastic hips, we attempted to restore their hip centres to

Quantitative hemodynamic analysis of brain aneurysms at different locations.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Studies have shown that the occurrence of brain aneurysms and risk of rupture vary between locations. However, the reason that aneurysms at different branches of the cerebral arteries have different clinical presentations is not clear. Because research has indicated that aneurysm hemodynamics may be one of the important factors related to aneurysm growth and rupture, our aim was to analyze and compare the flow parameters in aneurysms at different locations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 24 patient-specific aneurysm models were constructed by using 3D rotational ang

Computer-aided detection in full-field digital mammography in a clinical population: performance of radiologist and technologists.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of a computer-aided detection (CAD) system on the performance of mammogram readers in interpreting digital mammograms in a clinical population. Furthermore, the ability of a CAD system to detect breast cancer in digital mammography was studied in comparison to the performance of radiologists and technologists as mammogram readers. Digital mammograms of 1,048 consecutive patients were evaluated by a radiologist and three technologists. Abnormalities were recorded and an imaging conclusion was given as a BI-RADS score before and after CAD analy

Studies in use of the Greulich-Pyle skeletal age method to assess criminal liability.

In recent years, skeletal age determination has become increasingly important for determining the age of live subjects as part of criminal investigation. The most widely used method worldwide to determine skeletal age is the Greulich-Pyle atlas method. The present study examines the suitability of the Greulich-Pyle method given the particular requirements of forensic age estimates. It is a retrospective analysis of 649 hand radiographs originally taken from persons aged between 1 and 18 years, separately for each sex. If the Greulich-Pyle method is used exclusively, it can be claimed with a pr

Reproducibility of and file format effect on digital subtraction radiography of simulated external root resorptions.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, in simulated external root resorptions (ERR), two factors that may affect results of digital subtraction radiography (DSR): (1) intraobserver and interobserver reproducibility and (2) effects of digital file formats (TIFF, BMP and JPEG) on the estimation of mineral loss. METHODS: Eleven incisors were radiographed three times (NR, no resorption; SR, small--#1/4 round bur; and LR, large--#2 round bur) on standardized projections. The resulting images were reproduced and saved as TIFF, JPEG and BMP file formats. The pairs of TIFF images (NR x SR and NR x LR) were subtract

Posterior pelvic tilt in patients with decreased lumbar lordosis decreases acetabular femoral head covering.

The relationship between pelvic tilt and acetabular femoral head covering was determined in 38 patients with decreased lumbar lordosis. Posterior pelvic tilt and acetabular femoral head covering were measured on radiographs taken in both supine and standing positions. Previously reported normal values obtained from 96 patients were used as controls. Posterior pelvic tilt increased (P<.01) in patients with decreased lumbar lordosis and anterior acetabular femoral head covering decreased (P<.0001) compared with the controls. These differences were more remarkable in the standing position than in

Automated quantification of abdominal aortic calcification using 3D nnU-Net: a novel approach to assess AAA rupture risk.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) pose a serious rupture risk, heightened by aortic calcification. Traditional calcification scoring methods are slow and require expertise. This study aims to construct a convolutional neural network (nnU-Net) model for automatic quantification and segmentation of abdominal aortic calcification from a single CTA scan. METHODS: This retrospective study included 100 patients who underwent abdominal aortic CTA between January 2018 and October 2023, meeting specific inclusion criteria. Vessel and calcification segmentation were manually scored by two ph

Applying dual energy computed tomography to postmortem coronary computed tomographic angiography.

BACKGROUND: Medical examiners' offices are increasingly utilizing postmortem computed tomography (CT). While dual energy CT (DECT) has been applied in both clinical and postmortem settings, research on the application to postmortem coronary computed tomographic angiography (PMcCTA) is extremely limited. This study aims to evaluate whether DECT performed following PMcCTA using two contrast agents with differing chemical and physical properties allows for agent discrimination and simultaneous characterization of coronary artery patency and myocardial perfusion. METHODS: Phantoms were created us

Usefulness of intestinal real-time virtual sonography in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Transabdominal ultrasonography (US) examination for the intestine is often difficult, and its precedence for intestinal examination depends on accessibility to experienced ultrasonographers. Real-time virtual sonography (RVS) assists examination of US as a fusion method by synchronizing US images with pre-captured computed tomography or magnetic resonance images. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility to use RVS for the examination of the intestine. METHODS: The time to scan three parts of the intestine was compared between conventional US and RVS in seven participants witho

Ultra-Low-Dose Fetal CT With Model-Based Iterative Reconstruction: A Prospective Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Prenatal diagnosis of skeletal dysplasia by means of 3D skeletal CT examination is highly accurate. However, it carries a risk of fetal exposure to radiation. Model-based iterative reconstruction (MBIR) technology can reduce radiation exposure; however, to our knowledge, the lower limit of an optimal dose is currently unknown. The objectives of this study are to establish ultra-low-dose fetal CT as a method for prenatal diagnosis of skeletal dysplasia and to evaluate the appropriate radiation dose for ultra-low-dose fetal CT. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Relationships between tube current

Feasibility of automated proton therapy plan adaptation for head and neck tumors using cone beam CT images.

BACKGROUND: Intensity modulated proton therapy (IMPT) of head and neck (H&N) tumors may benefit from plan adaptation to correct for the dose perturbations caused by weight loss and tumor volume changes observed in these patients. As cone beam CT (CBCT) is increasingly considered in proton therapy, it may be possible to use available CBCT images following intensity correction for plan adaptation. This is the first study exploring IMPT plan adaptation on CBCT images corrected and delineated by deformable image registration of the planning CT (pCT) to the CBCT, yielding a virtual CT (vCT). Colon cancer: comprehensive evaluation with 64-section CT colonography using water enema as intraluminal contrast agent-a pictorial review.

Sixty-four-section CT colonography with water enema combines intracolonic neutral contrast agent with high-resolution CT images of the abdomen. Owing to submillimeter isotropic voxels, high-quality reformatted images are obtained. High-resolution images offer added value for the detection and localization of colonic lesions, evaluation of the local extent of the disease, and depiction, if any, of synchronous colorectal lesions and distant metastases. Sixty-four-section CT colonography with water enema has a major role in the evaluation of patients with colon cancer before planning therapy. It
