Metacognitive therapy for insomnia: An open cohort study on clinical outcomes and the role of cognitive-attentional syndrome factors in insomnia.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia is a common and distressing disorder. Evidence suggests that metacognitive beliefs and maladaptive strategies, such as worry and rumination, may maintain insomnia. OBJECTIVES: This study is the first trial of metacognitive therapy (MCT) for insomnia. It aimed to evaluate the effects of MCT on insomnia severity and examine how cognitive-attentional syndrome (CAS) components predict these changes. METHODS: An uncontrolled open cohort trial was conducted with 31 participants in a clinic setting. Participants received up to ten MCT sessions and completed weekly measures of i

The Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-30 (ERQ-30): A 30-item measure of 10 clinically relevant emotion regulation strategies.

People use different strategies to regulate their emotions, and these emotion regulation patterns have important implications for mental health. For over two decades, the most widely used tool for assessing emotion regulation has been the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire, a 10-item measure of cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression. Here, we introduce a new 30-item version-the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire-30 (ERQ-30). Built on the conceptual foundation of the process model of emotion regulation, the ERQ-30 aims to advance emotion regulation assessments by capturing a more comprehe

Exploring potential working mechanisms of accelerated HF-rTMS in refractory major depression with a focus on locus coeruleus connectivity.

BACKGROUND: This study investigates the effects of accelerated high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (aHF-rTMS), applied to the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), on locus coeruleus (LC) functional connectivity in the treatment of refractory medication-resistant major depression (MRD). METHODS: We studied 12 antidepressant-free refractory MRD patients, focusing on how aHF-rTMS affects the LC, a central component of the brain's noradrenergic system and key to mood regulation and stress response. RESULTS: A stronger decrease in LC functional connectivity followi

The effectiveness of an attention-based intervention for school-aged autistic children with anger regulating problems: A randomized controlled trial.

Anger regulation is a challenge for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). We investigated if attention-based cognitive behavioral treatment, based on mindfulness cognitive therapy (MBCT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), reduces aggressive behavior and improves anger coping in school-aged autistic children (n = 51). Children were randomized to an active-control or a treatment condition. The treatment included nine weekly sessions attention-based individual therapy. Parents in both conditions received three weekly psychoeducation group sessions to heighten awareness of expressed

Characterization of Comorbid Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder Using Ketamine as an Experimental Medicine Probe †.

Comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder (PTSD + MDD) is the most common pathological response to trauma, yet despite their synergistic detriment to health, knowledge regarding the neurobiological mechanism underlying PTSD + MDD is extremely limited. This study proposes a novel model of PTSD + MDD that is built on biological systems shown to underlay PTSD + MDD and takes advantage of ketamine's unique suitability to probe PTSD + MDD due to its rescue of stress-related neuroplasticity deficits. The central hypothesis is that changes in PTSD + MDD clinical symptoms ar

An examination of the relationship of patient modifiable and non-modifiable characteristics with fear of cancer recurrence among colorectal cancer survivors.

PURPOSE: Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is one of the most common and distressing issues affecting cancer survivors. This study examined (1) the association between modifiable cognitive, behavioral, and social characteristics and FCR, (2) the association between non-modifiable characteristics and FCR, and (3) the relative contributions of modifiable and non-modifiable characteristics to FCR. METHODS: Participants (n = 120) had been diagnosed with colorectal cancer and completed cancer treatment in the past 6 to 36 months. Participants completed self-report measures of modifiable cognitive (e

Maladaptive emotion regulation traits predict altered corticolimbic recovery from psychosocial stress.

BACKGROUND: Adaptive recovery from stress promotes healthy cognitive affective functioning, whereas maladaptive recovery is linked to poor psychological outcomes. Neural regions, like the anterior cingulate and hippocampus, play critical roles in psychosocial stress responding and serve as hubs in the corticolimbic neural system. To date, however, it is unknown how cognitive emotion regulation traits (cER), adaptive and maladaptive, influence corticolimbic stress recovery. Here, we examined acute psychosocial stress neural recovery, accounting for cER. METHODS: Functional neuroimaging data we

PTSD and autism spectrum disorder: Co-morbidity, gaps in research, and potential shared mechanisms.

BACKGROUND: While autism and trauma were often linked in psychoanalytic theory, very few scientific attempts have been made to explore the a … s associated with both disorders, as well as cognitive and behavioral mechanisms, such as increased rumination, cognitive rigidity, avoidance, anger, and aggression. In addition, the unique characteristics of ASD may determine which events are experienced as particularly traumatic (e.g., social insults and degradation, sensory overstimulation, abrupt changes in known r …

In the mind's eye: The late positive potential to negative and neutral mental imagery and intolerance of uncertainty.

There are many advantages to human beings' ability to generate and sustain mental imagery in the absence of exteroceptive stimuli; however, this ability may also underlie emotional disorders characterized by worry, rumination, or excessive concern about the future. For instance, fear-based disorders may be characterized by heightened ERPs to negative imagery. On the other hand, distress disorders may be characterized by attempts to avoid engaging with negative mental imagery, and therefore reduced electrocortical response. Prior ERP work has used negative and neutral pictorial stimuli to estab

A prospective study of pre-trauma risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear which potentially modifiable risk factors best predict post-trauma psychiatric disorders. We aimed to identify pre-trauma risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or major depression (MD) that could be targeted with resilience interventions. METHOD: Newly recruited paramedics (n = 453) were assessed for history of mental disorders with structured clinical interviews within the first week of their paramedic training and completed self-report measures to assess hypothesized predictors. Participants were assessed every 4 months for 2 years to identify any

Posttraumatic growth in parents and pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric medical experiences are potentially traumatic but may lead to psychological growth. OBJECTIVE: The study objective was to synthesize the published literature regarding posttraumatic growth (PTG) in parents and patients with serious pediatric illness (SPI) into a conceptual model. METHODS: We systematically searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsychInfo, and Sociological Abstracts in December 2012 to identify articles on stress or trauma caused by medical events with PTG as an outcome, reviewing articles pertaining to the pediatric population. We additionally reviewed articles outs

Insomnia-related complaints correlate with functional connectivity between sensory-motor regions.

According to the hyperarousal theory of insomnia, difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep occurs as a result of increased cognitive and physiological arousal caused by acute stressors and associated cognitive rumination, placing the individual in a perpetual cycle of hyperarousal and increased sensitivity to sensory stimulation. We tested the hypothesis that difficulty in initiating or maintaining sleep would be associated with increased functional connectivity between primary sensory processing and motor planning regions. Fifty-eight healthy adults (29 men, 29 women) completed a self-re

Perceived stress moderates emotion regulation success in real-world contexts: an ecologically-valid multilevel investigation.

BACKGROUND: Emotion regulation plays a crucial role in well-being in everyday life. Effective emotion regulation depends upon adaptively matching a given strategy to a given situation. Recent research has begun to explore these interactions in the context of daily reports of perceived stress, affect, and emotion regulation strategy usage. To further understand these differences in strategy efficacy in an ecologically valid context, we examined responses to real world stressors in a young adult sample. METHODS: We surveyed a range of emotion regulation strategies, including two forms of cognit

Changes in affect longitudinally mediate associations between emotion regulation strategy use and disordered eating.

BACKGROUND: Trait-level emotion regulation (ER) difficulties are associated with eating disorders (EDs) transdiagnostically. However, little research has examined whether within-person fluctuations in ER longitudinally predict ED behaviors in daily life or the mechanisms of ER effects. Investigating daily ER could help us better understand why people experience ED behaviors at a given time. We examined whether day-to-day changes in adaptive (e.g., cognitive reappraisal) and maladaptive (e.g., rumination) ER longitudinally predicted core ED behaviors (binge eating, purging, dieting) and whether

Emotion Regulation Predicts Depressive Symptoms in Adolescents: A Prospective Study.

Emotion regulation as a proximal factor has been linked with depressive symptoms. However, studies have mainly focused on a limited number of strategies and have mostly been cross-sectional in design. This is particularly evident when examining the protective effects of adaptive strategies. This study aimed to investigate the prospective relationship between putatively adaptive and maladaptive emotion regulation strategies and depressive symptoms among adolescents. Additionally, a person-oriented approach was applied to identify latent classes of adolescents based on their depressive symptoms

Worry wart: A preregistered, experimental investigation of worry-induced emotional eating and associated psychological characteristics.

Perseverative cognition (e.g., worry, rumination) is cross-sectionally associated with disordered eating behaviors and negative affect; yet little research has examined its causal role in emotional eating (EE). The current preregistered experimental study tested the influence of one type of perseverative cognition-worry-on objectively measured food consumption in the laboratory. A total of 129 undergraduate students (67.4 % cisgender women, AgeM = 19.87) were screened via a semi-structured diagnostic interview and randomly assigned to either a worry induction or control condition. My Catastrophizing and Your Catastrophizing: Dyadic Associations of Pain Catastrophizing and the Physical, Psychological, and Relational Well-being of Persons With Endometriosis and Their Partners.

OBJECTIVES: Endometriosis, a painful chronic gynecologic condition, contributes to disruptions in multiple areas of life for both those affected and their partner. Pain catastrophizing has been associated with worse pain outcomes and quality of life for women with endometriosis and with more cognitive load for partners. Examining both partners' pain catastrophizing dyadically with our variables of interest will enhance understanding of its associations with the distressing nature of experiencing and responding to pain during sex for couples with endometriosis. METHODS: Persons with endometrio

Commentary: I thought I was going to die and the world is not safe-how to help children recover after trauma? Reflections on Meiser-Stedman et al. (2019).

Children all over the world experience exposure to trauma. Why do only some young people have significant traumatic stress symptoms in the days and weeks immediately post-trauma while others do not, and why do some youth then recover without treatment while others go on to suffer from persistent PTSD? This important question is examined in a comprehensive study by Meiser-Stedman et al., (2019). In a sample of single-event trauma exposed youth, they investigate the role cognitive processes may have in shaping early reactions and in maintaining post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) over time.
