Play vocalizations induce affective bias in reward learning and memory in orangutans.

Affective biases, or shifts in learning and decision-making driven by affective states, are central to human cognition. Studies in rodents have shown that pharmacological and stress manipulations alter reward valuation, but how positive social signals shape these processes remains poorly understood. Here, we adapted the affective bias test, a translational rodent assay of affective biases in depression and antidepressant therapy, to ask whether positive social signals influence reward valuation in orangutans (Pongo spp.). We first validated the task by manipulating reward magnitude during lear

Body diversity to counteract body size adaptation: Testing the perceptual and attitudinal effects of a deadaptation procedure.

Visual exposure to thin or large bodies can produce perceptual aftereffects in the opposite direction. These adaptation effects could play a role in the detrimental effects of visual media on body image. This study investigated whether body-size aftereffects could be reduced by a deadaptation procedure based on exposure to diverse body shapes. In a mixed design, 59 female participants completed a perceptual judgment task and a state body dissatisfaction scale before and after adaptation to a large body, and after either a deadaptation procedure or a passive wait control condition. Adaptation p

A Multimodal Dataset of Full-Body Kinematics and Kinetics from Laboratory- and Wearable-Based Systems.

Kinematic and kinetic biomechanical measurements are critical for understanding human movements. Although laboratory-based systems such as optical motion capture (OMC) and instrumented treadmills provide gold-standard accuracy, their use is confined to controlled laboratory settings. Wearable systems, including inertial motion capture (IMC) and pressure-sensing insoles, enable measurements in real-world conditions but require validation against laboratory-based references. In this study, we present a comprehensive dataset that combines laboratory- and wearable-based systems to capture synchron

Decoding tactile working memory content reveals performance relevance of parietal fMRI activity patterns.

Working memory (WM) supports a range of higher order cognitive functions by enabling the short-term maintenance and manipulation of information through dynamic, distributed neural processes. In parallel to findings from the visual modality, tactile WM engages both sensory and higher-order cortical regions, but the temporal dynamics and functional significance of these areas remain incompletely understood. In this fMRI study, we used multivoxel pattern analysis to investigate how spatial features of tactile stimuli are represented and maintained across a short WM delay period. Our results revea

Theta-phase locking of single neurons during human spatial memory.

Memory processes may rely on complex interactions between single-neuron activity and local field potentials. To better understand such spike-field relationships in humans, we examined human theta-phase locking-neuronal firing at similar theta phases over time-using single-neuron recordings in epilepsy patients performing a spatial memory task. Applying frequency-adaptive theta-phase estimation in a broad 1-10 Hz frequency range, we found that theta-phase locking was widespread in the human medial temporal lobe during memory encoding and retrieval. Time-resolved spectral parameterization and cy

Beyond mindfulness: how Buddhist meditation transforms consciousness through distinct psychological pathways.

Buddhist meditation, encompassing practices such as Samatha (focused attention), Vipassana (open monitoring), and Metta (loving-kindness), offers unique pathways for transforming consciousness beyond conventional mindfulness. In this article, we review the studies that explore how these distinct meditative techniques systematically cultivate meta-cognitive insight, emotional regulation, and self-inquiry, facilitating profound shifts in awareness and personal growth. Recent neuroscience and psychology studies show that these techniques influence the mind in different ways: they strengthen atten

Annual Research Review: Developmental language disorder - a hidden condition with lifelong impact.

Developmental language disorder (DLD) is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. Yet, it is a hidden disorder: it can go undetected for years and may not be uncovered until academic, behavioral, and/or mental health challenges begin to surface. In this review, we survey what is currently known about DLD across the lifespan, with a particular focus on its collateral effects in childhood and adulthood. We begin with a brief discussion of terminological issues that have contributed to the confusion about and lack of awareness of DLD. We then describe the development of DLD from infan

A retinal detachment based strabismus detection through FEDCNN.

Ocular strabismus, a common condition in the present generation is an absolute risk factor for amblyopia and blinding premorbid visual loss. Despite the availability of new optometry tools with eye-tracking data, the issues persist in attaining accuracy and reliability in diagnosing strabismus. These two concerns are specifically accommodated in this study by the proposed novel approach that involves CNNs with eye-tracking datasets from subjects. The presented work aims to improve the accuracy of diagnostics in ophthalmology utilizing the integration of the further proposed algorithms into an

Transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) improves hot and cold executive functions in children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Children with attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have impaired hot and cold executive functions, which is thought to be related to impaired ventromedial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (vmPFC and dlPFC) functions. The present study aimed to assess the impact concurrent stimulation of dlPFC and vmPFC through transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), a non-invasive brain stimulation tool which enhances cortical excitability via application of alternating sinusoidal currents with random frequencies and amplitudes over the respective target regions on hot and cold executive fun

Mechanisms of Yellow Fever Transmission: Gleaning the Overlooked Records of Importance and Identifying Problems, Puzzles, Serious Issues, Surprises and Research Questions.

In viral disease research, few diseases can compete with yellow fever for the volume of literature, historical significance, richness of the topics and the amount of strong interest among both scientists and laypersons. While the major foci of viral disease research shifted to other more pressing new diseases in recent decades, many critically important basic tasks still remain unfinished for yellow fever. Some of the examples include the mechanisms of transmission, the process leading to outbreak occurrence, environmental factors, dispersal, and viral persistence in nature. In this review, th

Toggling between food-seeking and self-preservation behaviors via hypothalamic response networks.

Motivated behaviors are often studied in isolation to assess labeled lines of neural connections underlying innate actions. However, in nature, multiple systems compete for expression of goal-directed behaviors via complex neural networks. Here, we examined flexible survival decisions in animals tasked with food seeking under predation threat. We found that predator exposure rapidly induced physiological, neuronal, and behavioral adaptations in mice highlighted by reduced food seeking and consumption contingent on current threat level. Diminishing conflict via internal state or external enviro

Exposure to the thin beauty ideal: Are there subliminal priming effects?

OBJECTIVE: Previous research suggested that exposure to the thin beauty ideal propagated by the media is associated with body dissatisfaction and the development of disordered eating. Given recent suggestions regarding the role of automatic processes, we aimed to enhance our understanding of automatic, unconscious responses to body pictures and the association with the internalization of the thin ideal and the severity of eating disorder symptoms. METHOD: An affective priming task with body pictures of different weight as primes and a normal-weight body picture as target, which had to be eval

Changes in the Functional Range of Motion of the Thumb Metacarpophalangeal Joint After Trapeziometacarpal Arthrodesis for Patients With Advanced Trapeziometacarpal Osteoarthritis.

PURPOSE: Advanced-stage trapeziometacarpal (TMC) osteoarthritis of the thumb often presents with concomitant hyperextension deformity of the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint. Although several studies have reported simultaneous procedures to correct this deformity, the indication for these procedures remains controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in the range of motion (ROM) of the thumb MCP joint before and after TMC arthrodesis. METHODS: We evaluated the functional flexion and extension and functional ROM of the MCP joints during the performance of 10 activities of d

Using algorithms to address trade-offs inherent in predicting recidivism.

Although risk assessment has increasingly been used as a tool to help reform the criminal justice system, some stakeholders are adamantly opposed to using algorithms. The principal concern is that any benefits achieved by safely reducing rates of incarceration will be offset by costs to racial justice claimed to be inherent in the algorithms themselves. But fairness trade-offs are inherent to the task of predicting recidivism, whether the prediction is made by an algorithm or human. Based on a matched sample of 67,784 Black and White federal supervisees assessed with the Post Conviction Risk A

Relapsed refractory multiple myeloma: a comprehensive overview.

Most patients with relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma (RRMM) have been treated with drug combinations including a proteasome inhibitor (PI) and/or an immunomodulatory drug (IMiD). The goal of therapy for such patients is therefore to achieve disease control with acceptable toxicity and patient-defined decent quality of life. Physicians face a difficult task not only deciding who to treat, but also when to treat and how to treat, utilizing knowledge of previously administered therapies, patient comorbidities, potential adverse events, and patient wishes to make such a critical decision. Osmolality and blood pressure stability during hemodialysis.

Homeostatic regulation of plasma osmolality (POsm) is critical for normal cellular function in humans. Arginine vasopressin (AVP) is the major hormone responsible for the maintenance of POsm and acts to promote renal water retention in conditions of increased POsm. However, AVP also exerts pressor effects, and its release can be stimulated by the development of effective arterial blood volume depletion. Patients with end-stage renal disease on hemodialysis, particularly those with minimal or no residual renal function, have impaired ability to regulate water retention in response to AVP. While

The effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) on Idiopathic Hypersomnia: a pilot study.

Idiopathic Hypersomnia (IH) is a rare sleep disorder characterised by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) that leads to invalidating daytime consequences. Till now the treatment of IH has mirrored that of sleepiness in narcolepsy, and it is mainly focused on symptoms' management. We employed an anodal transcranic Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) treatment in order to induce a shift toward arousal in IH patients' cortex during the day. Every patients underwent a 4 weeks treatment (3 stimulations per week, for a total of 12 stimulations over a period of 28 days) with an assessment at the baselin

Remapping, Spatial Stability, and Temporal Continuity: From the Pre-Saccadic to Postsaccadic Representation of Visual Space in LIP.

As our eyes move, we have a strong percept that the world is stable in space and time; however, the signals in cortex coming from the retina change with each eye movement. It is not known how this changing input produces the visual percept we experience, although the predictive remapping of receptive fields has been described as a likely candidate. To explain how remapping accounts for perceptual stability, we examined responses of neurons in the lateral intraparietal area while animals performed a visual foraging task. When a stimulus was brought into the response field of a neuron that exhib

Iowa Gambling Task in patients with early-onset Parkinson's disease: strategy analysis.

The aim of our study was to analyse decision making in early-onset Parkinson's disease (PD) patients performing the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT). We compared 19 patients with early-onset PD (≤ 45 years) on dopaminergic medication (no evidence of depression, dementia, executive dysfunction according to the Tower of London test and the Stroop test, or pathological gambling) with 20 age-matched controls. A computer version of the IGT was employed. The PD patients achieved slightly lower IGT scores than the control group. A detailed analysis based on 'shift frequencies' between the individual decks sh
