Single-Stage Flexor Tendon Reconstruction Using Tendon Grafting Versus Turnover Tendon Split-Lengthening Technique.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate the long-term functional outcomes and complication rates of single-stage flexor tendon reconstruction using either traditional tendon grafting or the turnover split-lengthening technique in patients with flexor tendon injuries that were unsuitable for primary repair. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 14 patients who underwent single-stage flexor tendon reconstruction between 2014 and 2022. Seven patients received palmaris longus tendon grafts, and seven underwent the turnover split-lengthening procedure. Inclusion criteria comprised adequate soft tissu…

Minimally invasive reconstruction of chronic achilles tendon ruptures using the ipsilateral free semitendinosus tendon graft and interference screw fixation.

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendon ruptures represent more than 40% of all tendon ruptures requiring surgical management. About 20% of acute Achilles tendon tears are not diagnosed at the time of injury and become chronic, necessitating more complicated management than fresh injuries. Several techniques for the reconstruction of chronic tears of the Achilles tendon have been described, but the superiority of one technique over the others has not been demonstrated. HYPOTHESIS: Mini-invasive reconstruction of the Achilles tendon, with a gap lesion larger than 6 cm, using the ipsilateral free semitendi

A lipoma within the Achilles tendon sheath.

We report a case demonstrating a rare finding associated with a relatively common injury. Lipomata are rarely found within tendon sheaths; but in the case of our patient, at the time of operative repair for a ruptured Achilles tendon, we found a fatty growth within the tendon sheath. The diagnosis of a lipoma was confirmed by histology. Although uncommon, it remains important to be aware of the existence of neoplastic growths within tendon sheaths and to establish the exact nature of these growths by histological analysis.

[Simultaneous rupture of a patellar tendon and contralateral quadriceps tendon].

The simultaneous bilateral rupture of the quadriceps tendon is a rare injury; only occasional reports exist about the bilateral simultaneous rupture of the patellar tendon. Degenerative changes of the tendon due to drugs or diseases lead to the rupture. We describe two cases of simultaneous rupture of the patellar and contralateral quadriceps tendons; only one patient had special risks. We report the management of therapy and the functional results using the Lysholm score and Knee Rating Scale.

The use of suture anchors to repair the ruptured quadriceps tendon.

Quadriceps tendon rupture is an incapacitating injury that usually requires surgical repair. Traditional repair methods involve transpatellar suture tunnels, but recent reports have introduced the idea of using suture anchors to repair the ruptured tendon. We present 5 cases of our technique of using suture anchors to repair the ruptured quadriceps tendon.

Most Common Injuries in Resistance Training: Mechanisms, Therapeutic Interventions, and Preventive Strategies.

Resistance training is a structured exercise modality aimed at enhancing strength, hypertrophy, and overall fitness. However, it carries an inherent risk of musculoskeletal injuries, particularly in the shoulder, lower back, knee, and wrist/hand. The most common injury mechanisms include muscle strains, tendon tears, tendinitis, and sprains, with acute injuries predominating. Key contributing factors are improper technique, excessive loading, insufficient recovery, and anabolic steroid use. While most injuries are mild and resolve with conservative management, severe cases may require surgical

Novel approaches of the nanotechnology-based drug delivery systems for knee joint injuries: A review.

The knee joint is one of the largest, most complex, and frequently utilized organs in the body. It is very vulnerable to injuries due to activities, diseases, or accidents, which lead to or cause knee joint injuries in people of all ages. There are several types of knee joint injuries such as contusions, sprains, and strains to the ligament, tendon injuries, cartilage injuries, meniscus injuries, and inflammation of synovial membrane. To date, many drug delivery systems, e.g. nanoparticles, dendrimers, liposomes, micelles, and exosomes, have been used for the treatment of knee joint injuries. …

Atypical Coxa Saltans Due to Partial Proximal Hamstring Avulsion: A Case Presentation Highlighting the Role for Dynamic Sonography.

Painful hip snapping can present as a rare sequela of proximal hamstring injury. We present a case of painful snapping of the conjoint tendon of the semitendinosus and biceps femoris over the ischial tuberosity in the setting of a partial proximal hamstring disruption. Dynamic ultrasonography identified the source of snapping and a persistent attachment of the conjoint tendon to the sacrotuberous ligament, which prevented retraction and allowed subluxation of the tendons across the ischial tuberosity. Following surgical transection of the persistent sacrotuberous ligament attachment to the con

Traumatic rupture of the superior oblique muscle tendon resulting in acquired Brown's syndrome.

Traumatic rupture of the superior oblique tendon is a rare cause of acquired Brown's syndrome. This report describes a case of traumatic rupture of the superior oblique tendon, distal to the trochlea, after injury with a plant hook. The ruptured tendon was reapproximated. Postoperatively, asymptomatic Brown's syndrome developed, although residual function of the superior oblique muscle was retained. Full-thickness upper eyelid lacerations, especially those caused by a hook, must be explored carefully to exclude superior oblique tendon rupture. Careful reapproximation of the tendon can result i

Achilles tendon resting angle is able to detect deficits after an Achilles tendon rupture, but it is not a surrogate for direct measurements of tendon elongation, function or symptoms.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to investigate how the Achilles tendon resting angle (ATRA), an indirect measurement of tendon elongation, correlates with ultrasonography (US) measurements of the Achilles tendon length 6 and 12 months after an acute ATR and relates to other clinical outcome measurements such as heel-rise height, jumping ability and patient-reported outcome measurements (PROMs). METHODS: Patients were included following acute Achilles tendon rupture (ATR). Achilles tendon length, ATRA, heel-rise height (HRH), drop countermovement jump (Drop CMJ) and PROMs (Achilles tendon t

Extensor tendon lacerations in horses: 50 cases (1982-1988).

Medical records of 50 horses with extensor tendon lacerations affecting 53 limbs over 7 years (1982 to 1988) were reviewed to determine the clinical features and prognosis for athletic soundness after treatment. Mean and median ages were 4.8 and 3 years, respectively. Eighty-nine percent of the injuries involved the hind limbs, with approximately equal distribution between the right and left limbs. Hind limb lacerations involved the long digital extensor tendon (28 limbs), lateral digital extensor tendon (3 limbs), or both tendons (16 limbs). Forelimb lacerations involved the common digital ex

Open Avulsion of the Achilles Tendon Through the Popliteal Fossa Without Associated Fracture: A Report of a Unique Case.

We present the case of a 58-year-old woman who sustained an open avulsion of the Achilles tendon with an unusual posterior extrusion through the popliteal fossa following a run-over trauma, remarkably without associated bony injury or major arterial damage. Surgical exploration revealed a complete tendon avulsion accompanied by a small venous laceration, which was successfully repaired. The tendon was anatomically reinserted into the calcaneus using suture anchors after subcutaneous tunneling along the posterior leg. The popliteal and distal wounds were closed primarily; the posterior wound th

The Direct Tendon Suture and Paratenon Repair Technique for Acute Tendinous Mallet Finger: A Case Series.

(1) Introduction: Tendinous mallet finger is a frequent deformity that occurs after an extensor tendon injury during sports or daily life activities. Despite the existence of numerous non-operative and operative techniques to address this deformity, there is a controversy on its optimal management. In this study, we aimed to present a direct tendon suture technique using the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint open approach for treating tendinous mallet finger injury. (2) Methods: Between 2019 and 2021, 19 patients with closed non-fracture tendinous mallet fingers underwent the direct tendon an

Superior peroneal retinaculum reattachment for an atraumatic peroneus brevis tendon subluxation: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Peroneal tendon subluxation is a rare pathology, generally associated with sport-induced trauma, that occurs due to the rupture of the superior peroneal retinaculum. The diagnosis is mainly clinical, but the use of imaging techniques, such as dynamic ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging, may contribute to its clarification. Treatment may be conservative or surgical, although there is no consensus on the most appropriate technique to be employed. We report a case of subluxation of the peroneus brevis tendon, with no apparent traumatic cause, in which there was a need for a surg

Risk of tendon entrapment under a dorsal bridge plate in a distal radius fracture model.

PURPOSE: To determine the risk of iatrogenic damage to the extensor tendons and sensory nerves under a bridge plate along the second versus third metacarpal. METHODS: Using 6 paired (left-right) cadaver forearms-wrists and via a volar approach, we created a distal radius fracture with metaphyseal comminution. We then applied a dorsal distraction plate to either the second or third metacarpal. We next performed dorsal dissection of the hand and wrist over the zone of injury to determine the position of the plate relative to the extensor tendons and sensory nerves. RESULTS: The bridge plate on

Liquid Poly-N-acetyl Glucosamine (sNAG) Improves Achilles Tendon Healing in a Rat Model.

The Achilles tendon, while the strongest and largest tendon in the body, is frequently injured. Even after surgical repair, patients risk re-rupture and long-term deficits in function. Poly-N-acetyl glucosamine (sNAG) polymer has been shown to increase the rate of healing of venous leg ulcers, and use of this material improved tendon-to-bone healing in a rat model of rotator cuff injury. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate the healing properties of liquid sNAG polymer suspension in a rat partial Achilles tear model. We hypothesized that repeated sNAG injections throughout h

Defining the relationship between rotator cuff injury and proximal humerus fractures.

The purpose of our study was to correlate radiographic characteristics with rotator cuff tendon injury on magnetic resonance imaging after fractures of the proximal humerus. We prospectively obtained magnetic resonance imaging on 30 patients with proximal humerus fractures after classifying each fracture radiographically using Neer and AO systems and determining the displacement of the greater tuberosity. Twelve patients (40.0%) had either complete ruptures or avulsions of at least one of the rotator cuff muscles. No abnormality was identified in the rotator cuff musculature in nine patients (
