Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. XVI. Helminth and arthropod parasites of blue and black wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus and Connochaetes gnou).

Fifty-five blue wildebeest ( Connochaetes taurinus ) were shot for parasite recovery at approximately monthly intervals during a period of 13 months in the Kruger National Park. Thirteen nematode species, 4 cestode species, 1 trematode, the larvae of 5 oestrid flies, 3 lice species, 7 ixodid tick species, 1 mite species and the nymphae of a pentastomid were recovered. The seasonal prevalence of 8 nematodes, 2 cestodes, the larvae of 4 oestrid flies, 2 lice and 4 ixodid tick species was determined. The endo- and ectoparasite burdens of 7 black wildebeest ( Connochaetes gnou ) shot in the Golden

Emergence of Babesia canis in southern England.

BACKGROUND: The United Kingdom is considered free of autochthonous transmission of canine babesiosis although cases are reported in dogs associated with recent travel abroad. During the winter months of 2015/16, a cluster of cases of disease in dogs with signs suggestive of canine babesiosis were reported in Harlow, Essex. METHODS: Babesia species were detected in dog blood samples by Giemsa staining of blood smears and by pan-piroplasm PCRs. Babesia species were also detected in extracts of tick DNA using pan-piroplasm PCRs. DNA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis was used to confirm the sp

A School-Based Intervention to Increase Lyme Disease Preventive Measures Among Elementary School-Aged Children.

PURPOSE: Educational interventions to reduce Lyme disease (LD) among at-risk school children have had little study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether a short in-class LD education program based on social learning theory and the Health Belief Model (HBM) impacted a child's knowledge, attitude, and preventive behavior. METHODS: Students in grades 2-5 in 19 elementary schools were selected in an area that was highly endemic for LD. The children received an educational intervention or were on a wait list as controls. Their knowledge, attitudes, and self-reported preventive behavio

Parasitism of prehistoric humans and companion animals from Antelope Cave, Mojave County, northwest Arizona.

Previously, we reported a tick recovered from Antelope Cave in extreme northwest Arizona. Further analyses of coprolites from Antelope Cave revealed additional parasitological data from coprolites of both human and canid origin. A second tick was found. This site is the only archaeological locality where ticks have been recovered. We also discovered an acanthocephalan in association with Enterobius vermicularis eggs in the same coprolite. This association shows that the coprolite was deposited by a human. This discovery expands our knowledge of the range of prehistoric acanthocephalan infectio

Identification and partial purification of serologically defined Boophilus microplus larval antigens by natural ectoparasite exposure.

In an effort to identify life-stage specific Boophilus microplus proteins that elicit a humoral response in cattle, soluble proteins were extracted from 10- to 14-day-old larvae and subsequently fractionated by size-exclusion chromatography and reverse-phase high pressure liquid chromatography. Several antigens were identified by Western blotting as potentially shared with other ixodid tick species since antibodies to these proteins were present in sera of calves not previously exposed to B. microplus. Six putative B. microplus-specific antigens were identified by antibodies in the sera of cal

Salivary gland changes and host antibody responses associated with feeding of male lone star ticks (Acari:Ixodidae).

The goal of this study was to demonstrate that male lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.), actively feed on rabbits during attachment and that the host is capable of mounting an immune response against male salivary gland proteins. During attachment, it was shown that male ticks salivary glands hypertrophy. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was used to detect rabbit serum proteins in the midgut of previously attached male ticks. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that the proteins expressed in the male tick salivary gland changed during feeding, with several new proteins in

Bovine homocytotropic antibody in the sera of cattle resistant to infestation with Rhipicephalus appendiculatus.

The homologous skin sensitizing activity of serum from tick-naive cattle (Bos taurus) and from cattle resistant to the tick Rhipicephalus appendiculatus was tested by attempting to induce passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA) in tick-naive calves. The serum from tick-resistant cattle induced PCA, whereas that from tick-naive cattle failed to do so. The PCA was more marked at 72 hours than at 24 hours after administration of the serum. Treatment of the serum by heat at 56 degrees C for 2 hours or by adding 0.1 M 2-mercaptoethanol to it reduced its ability to sensitize. Serum from tick-resistant c

[Cockroaches and co. The role of health pests as allergen source].

In most of the cases health pests are carriers of pathogens or parasites which have a negative impact on human health or affect the health of other mammals. What is lesser known is that they can also act as allergens. Most of the health pests in this sense belong to the arthropods, such as cockroaches (Blattaria), mosquitos (Culiciformia), lice (Pediculus humanus corporis), fleas (Siphonaptera) and ticks (Argasidae). In the group of vertebrates rats (Rattus norvegicus and Rattus rattus), house mice (Mus musculus) and pigeons (Columba livia domestica) are also classified as health pests. Also s

Arthropod-borne diseases associated with political and social disorder.

The living conditions and the crowded situations of the homeless, war refugees, or victims of a natural disaster provide ideal conditions for the spread of lice, fleas, ticks, flies and mites. The consequence of arthropod infestation in these situations is underestimated. Along with louse-borne infections such as typhus, trench fever, and relapsing fever, the relationship between Acinetobacter spp.-infected lice and bacteremia in the homeless is not clear. Murine typhus, tungiasis, and myiasis are likely underestimated, and there has been a reemergence of bed bugs. Attempted eradication of the

Babesia canis and Babesia rossi co-infection in an untraveled Nigerian dog.

A sexually intact 6-month-old female Alsatian dog was presented to the Veterinary Clinic of the National Veterinary Research Institute, Vom, Plateau State, Nigeria, for the following complaints: anorexia, hemoglobinuria, fever, tick infestation and general malaise. Microscopy revealed piroplasms with a wide range of sizes (1-5 μm in length) in red blood cells, raising a suspicion of a co-infection with two or more Babesia species. Specific PCR assays for canine Babesia spp. and DNA sequencing revealed the presence of Babesia canis and Babesia rossi co-infection. This study constitutes the firs

Survey on the subject of equine Lyme borreliosis.

According to the results of a questionnaire on equine Lyme borreliosis addressing veterinarians in Germany, the existence of the disease was confirmed by more than half of the 118 participants. Practitioners who regarded Borrelia burgdorferi as a pathogen of horses seemed to be more sensitized in terms of the number of annually diagnosed cases as well as the frequency of occurrence of tick infestation with equine patients or prophylactic treatments against ectoparasites by horse owners. Chronically poor performance and diverse orthopaedic problems were the clinical symptoms most often leading

History of U.S. military contributions to the study of rickettsial diseases.

Rickettsial diseases have affected the military throughout history. Efforts such as those of the Joint U.S. Typhus Commission near the beginning of World War II and of military researchers since have reduced the impact of these diseases on U.S. and Allied forces. Despite the postwar development of effective antibiotic therapies, the newly emerging antibiotic-resistant scrub typhus rickettsial strains of the Asian Pacific region mandate continued research and surveillance. Similarly, tick-infested training areas in the United States and similar exposure abroad render the spotted fevers and the

A monitoring study on the prevalence of dermatophilosis and parafilariosis in cattle in a smallholder semi-arid farming area in Zimbabwe.

The prevalences of dermatophilosis and parafilariosis were monitored for one year in cattle in Sanyati, a semi-arid smallholder farming area in Zimbabwe. The prevalence of dermatophilosis differed (p < 0.05) with season and among calves, cows, oxen and bulls. In bulls and cows, dermatophilosis lesions were localized mainly to the inguinal regions and between the front limbs. The prevalence and morbidity of dermatophilosis infection were significantly higher (p < 0.05) during the wet season than in the dry season. No mortalities were recorded. The prevalence of parafilariosis was similar to tha

Acute recumbency associated with Anaplasma phagocytophilum infection in a horse.

An 11-year-old Hanoverian-cross gelding was evaluated because of acute onset of ataxia, recumbency, and fever. At the stable, this and other horses had recently been infested with ticks. Results of analysis of a sample of CSF were within reference limits, but hematologic abnormalities included lymphopenia, thrombocytopenia, mild anemia, and intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies in neutrophils that were consistent with Anaplasma phagocytophilum (previously Ehrlichia equi). Results of serum biochemical analyses were characteristic of infection and included high, unconjugated bilirubin concentration.

Cloning and partial characterization of a Boophilus microplus (Acari: Ixodidae) calreticulin.

We report the cloning, sequence characterization and expression analysis of a calreticulin (CRT) coding cDNA of Boophilus microplus. CRT is a calcium-binding protein involved in multiple cell functions and possibly implicated in parasites host immune system evasion. The CRT cDNA sequence and its molecular characterization are described. Sequence similarity and phylogenetic analyses indicate a close relationship to other arthropod CRT sequences. The CRT cDNA was also expressed in a procariotic system and the recombinant protein (rBmCRT) was used to raise antibodies in a rabbit. Expression analy

Comparative toxicity of three variant oils and their nanoemulsions on the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Tick control mainly depends on using chemical acaricides that have led to the emergence of resistant tick populations along with environmental hazards. Natural alternatives including essential oils are now widely used to avoid the undesirable effects of chemicals on human, animals and environment. In this study, three commercial oils (myrrh, patchouli, and cypress) and their nanoemulsions (NEs) were tested against Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato unfed adults. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the nanoemulsions. Four concentr

High prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi s.l. in the European red squirrel Sciurus vulgaris in France.

The European red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) has long been suspected to be a reservoir host of the agents of Lyme borreliosis, in particular B. burgdorferi sensu stricto (s.s.). However, very few data support this hypothesis. Hereafter, we investigated the infections with B. burgdorferi genospecies in road-killed red squirrels collected across France. We also characterized the diversity of hard tick species collected from a subsample of hosts. DNA of B. burgdorferi genospecies were detected and identified from PCR products in ear biopsies using reverse line blot hybridization. Variation in pre
