Altered Passive Eruption Complicating Optimal Orthodontic Bracket Placement: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

An unusual case of altered passive eruption with gingival hyperpigmentation and a Class I malocclusion in a 12-year-old girl having no previous history of medication is presented. The patient reported with spacing in the upper arch, moderate crowding in the lower arch, anterior crossbite and excessive gingival tissue on the labial surfaces of teeth in both the arches. The inadequate crown lengths made placement of the orthodontic brackets difficult. Preadjusted orthodontic brackets have a very precise placement protocol which can affect tooth movement in all 3 planes of space if violated. The

[Permanent molar crypts in the human mandible].

A few decades ago, relatively little was known concerning the pre-eruptive spatial development of permanent molars. The material that formed the basis for this study consisted of 114 dry human mandibles of young children and adolescents. Measurements were made on radiographs of the bony crypts in which the tooth germs had existed ante mortem and the pattern of spatial development was studied macroscopically and histologically. The findings revealed a consistent developmental pattern, in which the means of expansion of the crypts of the second and third molars, prior to crown-calcification, dis

Success rate of Sealapex in root canal treatment for primary teeth: 3-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and radiographic success of Sealapex pulpectomies in primary teeth. STUDY DESIGN: Root canals of 62 primary teeth were filled with Sealapex. The tooth was restored with a stainless steel crown, amalgam, compomer, or glass ionomer cement. Clinical and radiographic evaluations of pulpectomized teeth were performed for up to 36 months afterward. RESULTS: The overall success rate was 92.3%. During the follow-up period, 4 teeth (7.7%) showing periapical lesion and pathologic resorption were extracted and rated as "failure." There were

Eruption cyst formation associated with cyclosporin A.

BACKGROUND: Cyclosporin A (CyA) is a potent immunomodulatory agent with a wide range of applications. Despite its therapeutic value, multiple adverse effects of CyA have been identified. This case report describes eruption cyst formation as a possible adverse effect of CyA administration during tooth eruption in a boy treated with CyA as a consequence of a cardiac transplantation. The clinical diagnosis of eruption cyst was confirmed by histopathological examination. TREATMENT: The periodontal treatment consisted of supragingival and subgingival scaling, followed by surgical removal of the ti

Localized intrinsic staining of teeth due to pulpitis and pulp necrosis in dogs.

Dental charts and records of 71 dogs were received and 84 intact tooth crowns were noted to have been entirely discolored in shades of pink, purple, grey, or tan. Endodontic therapy was performed on 49 of these teeth allowing gross examination of the entire pulp. In exploratory pulpotomy was performed in 15 teeth prior to exodontic therapy in order to assess the integrity of the coronal pulp. Gross signs of partial or total pulp necrosis were present in 59 (92.2%) of these teeth. The pulp was not observed grossly in 20 teeth which received exodontic therapy. Overall, of the 84 teeth evaluated,…

Effect of the type carrier used on the results of dichlorodifluoromethane application to teeth.

Thermal testing, especially cold, is an important part of diagnosing pulpal vitality. It was the purpose of this study to determine (i) if a difference exists in temperature when Endo ice is used with four different applicators, and (ii) if there is one applicator device that provides the greatest thermal change for a tooth. Endo ice was used with the following applicators: a #2 standard size large cotton pellet, a #4 standard size small cotton pellet, a wood stick cotton tip applicator, and a cotton roll. The temperature of a mandibular incisor pulp chamber was measured in degree C 10 s after

Biologic width and its relation to periodontal biotypes.

Although average measurements of the biologic zone do not necessarily reflect any one clinical situation, they do establish a basis upon which clinical decisions can be made. Clinical impressions, human autopsy material, and animal studies support the concept of a biologic width. Impingement on the attachment in a susceptible host has shown adverse reactions, including gingival inflammation and alveolar bone loss. The concept is clinically important in determining the extent of osseous surgery necessary in the exposure of sound tooth structure. If the implant-abutment interface is considered t

Regenerative Endodontic Procedures in Immature Teeth Affected by Regional Odontodysplasia.

INTRODUCTION: Regional odontodysplasia (ROD) is a rare developmental disorder characterized by hypo-mineralization and hypoplasia of enamel and dentin. Symptoms include poorly developed tooth buds, delayed eruption of permanent teeth in affected quadrants, and ghost teeth. The affected teeth often become necrotic due to abnormal enamel and dentin development, making them susceptible to caries and infection. The aim of this case report is to describe the treatment of ROD through pulp revascularization. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old girl was referred for endodontic treatment. The mandibular left i

Evaluation of cuspal deflection and fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth restored with different restorative material combinations.

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effects of restorations using varied materials and their combinations on cuspal deflection and fracture resistance of endodontically treated MOD cavitated maxillary premolars. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 168 premolar teeth were used in the study. The teeth were divided into 14 groups (12 teeth in each group) as Positive control (Group 1), Negative control (Group 2) and Test groups (Group 3-14). MOD cavities were prepared, and then endodontic treatments were performed on teeth in all groups except the positive control group. Group 1 was the Positive control (inta

Replacement of severely traumatized teeth with immediate implants and immediate loading: literature review and case reports.

One of the options for management of severely traumatized dentitions is to provide immediate implant placement with immediate loading. Three representative cases out of 15 patients with 23 traumatized teeth treated to date in our clinic are presented. None had labial bone fractures. The teeth were replaced with NobelReplace Groovy implants (Nobel Biocare, Gothenburg, Sweden) in the fresh sockets immediately after extraction. They were placed toward the palatal areas in the sockets and 3 mm below the gingival margins. If there were gaps between implants and sockets wider than 1 mm, particulate

Pre-eruptive intra-coronal resorption: controversies and treatment options.

Pre-eruptive intra-coronal resorption (PIER) is a defect located in the dentin of an unerupted tooth, just beneath the dentin-enamel junction, with a prevalence of 0.5-2% of the teeth. The depth of the lesion is variable and may also reach the pulp. In the past, these lesions were confused with caries, and were therefore called "hidden" or "pre-eruptive caries". These defects are usually detected incidentally in routine dental radiographs. It has been proven that in the pre-eruptive stage the lesions contain soft tissue and inflammatory cells. The present report describes the clinical manageme

Bilateral complicated crown fractures secondary to chin injury: a case report.

Traumatic injuries to the chin are not uncommon in children. Nevertheless, crown fractures, which are common sequelae to this type of injury, might be overlooked, especially if dental care is not sought immediately after a visit to a non-dental facility. The present case report reviews the delayed diagnosis and treatment outcome of a bilateral posterior complicated crown fracture affecting mandibular second primary molars in a young child. Pharmacologic and orthodontic considerations are also discussed in the paper.

Predictable periimplant gingival esthetics: use of the natural tooth as a provisional following implant placement.

UNLABELLED: Maintaining the interdental papilla and bone height following implant placement has been a challenge for the restorative dentist. Bone resorption following anterior tooth extraction is common and often compromises the esthetics of the final restoration. The tissue must be maintained during the surgical and healing phases to achieve an esthetic outcome. Using the patient's natural tooth as a provisional can help maintain the volume and support the papilla. This article describes a technique to achieve maximum esthetics and preservation of tissue following tooth extraction and implan

Celiac disease and its impact on the oral health status - review of the literature.

The paper presents the most recent reports on celiac disease, especially its manifestations within the oral cavity. Particular attention should be paid to typical dental enamel defects with a various degree of advancement: discolorations, horizontal groves and pits, and even significant structural destruction causing the change of the dental crown. Symmetric location of defects within all dentition sections, and within the same anatomic groups of teeth (the most frequently: incisors and first permanent molars), is specific for celiac disease. The changes described above may be the only manifes

Bilateral maxillary fused second and third molars: a rare occurrence.

This case report describes the diagnosis and endodontic therapy of maxillary fused second and third molars, using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). A 31-year-old Chinese male, with no contributory medical or family/social history, presented with throbbing pain in the maxillary right molar area following an unsuccessful attempted tooth extraction. Clinical examination revealed what appeared initially to be a damaged large extra cusp on the buccal aspect of the distobuccal cusp of the second molar. However, CBCT revealed that a third molar was fused to the second molar. Unexpectedly, the max

[Effects of pulpal inflammation on the activities of periodontal mechanoreceptive afferent fibers].

Response properties of periodontal single afferents were investigated in cats with inflammatory irritant-induced pulpitis. A deep dentin cavity was prepared on the right mandibular canine in order to apply an inflammatory agent and small fiber excitant, allyl-isothiocyanate (mustard oil: MO), and single afferents innervating the canine periodontal mechanoreceptor were dissected from the mandibular nerve bundle by examining impulse responses while applying mechanical stimuli to the tip of the crown. Evoked impulses by mechanical stimuli were increased in number for 15 minutes with MO applicatio

Vascularization of engineered teeth.

The implantation of cultured dental cell-cell re-associations allows for the reproduction of fully formed teeth, crown morphogenesis, epithelial histogenesis, mineralized dentin and enamel deposition, and root-periodontium development. Since vascularization is critical for organogenesis and tissue engineering, this work aimed to study: (a) blood vessel formation during tooth development, (b) the fate of blood vessels in cultured teeth and re-associations, and (c) vascularization after in vivo implantation. Ex vivo, blood vessels developed in the dental mesenchyme from the cap to bell stages an
