We report a case of vertebral tuberculosis in a female patient with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) who had been treated with maintenance hemodialysis for six years. Diagnosis of lumbar bacillary spondylitis was particularly difficult, owing to proximity of polycystic kidneys and spine. After removal of one kidney in which no bacterial focus was found, pain and inflammation persisted. The article presents principles of the surgical treatment of hematogenic osteomyelitis of the vertebral column and its complications developed on the basis of studying and analysis of results of operative interventions performed in 145 patients. A system of operative procedures is proposed which showed high effectiveness in treatment of both purulent infections and complications of the disease, spinal disorders in particular.

Central nervous system tuberculoma is rare and challenging situation. Clinical records of patients with pathologically proven tuberculoma were retrospectively reviewed. Thoracotomy is used to approach and treat anterior spinal lesions arising from various causes. Between 1990 and 1997, we treated 56 patients (40 men and 16 women) between 14 and 67 years old (mean 38.4). All had spinal lesions that were impossible or difficult to reach by a posterior approach. INTRODUCTION: Spinal intradural arachnoid cysts (SIACs) are rare spinal entities that are categorized as primary or secondary pathologies. OBJECTIVE: To summarize the feature and treatment of the primary intraspinal abscess in order to improve the prognosis.
METHODS: In the study, 13 cases of primary intraspinal abscess of the recent 20 years were retrospectively analyzed. The history, etiology, pathogen, surgical methods and prognosis were summarized.
