OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with unilateral auditory neuropathy (UAN), and to provide guidance for future clinical diagnosis and research.
METHODS: Patients who were clinically diagnosed with UAN from 2004 to 2019 were included. Clinical characteristics, audiological features, imaging findings, genetic test results and management effect were summarized and followed.
RESULTS: A total of 44 patients [mean age, 4.35 ± 4.39 years; 22 (50.00%) males and 22 (50.00%) females] were enrolled for analyses. Among the 38 patients who were tested by pure-tone or behavio

Cochlear neurodegeneration commonly accompanies hair cell loss resulting from aging, ototoxicity, or exposures to intense noise or blast overpressures. However, the precise pathophysiological mechanisms that drive this degenerative response have not been fully elucidated. Our laboratory previously demonstrated that non-transgenic rats exposed to blast overpressures exhibited marked somatic accumulation of neurotoxic variants of the microtubule-associated protein, Tau, in the hippocampus. In the present study, we extended these analyses to examine neurodegeneration and pathologic Tau accumulati

We analyzed the effect of 2-week individualized visual feedback-based balance training on the postural control of patients undergoing retrosigmoid microsurgical removal of vestibular schwannoma. We performed prospective evaluation of 17 patients allocated into two groups: feedback group (9 patients, mean age 37 years) and standard physiotherapy group (8 patients, mean age 44 years). Patients in both the groups were treated once per day by intensive rehabilitation from 5th to 14th postoperative day. Rehabilitation of patients in the feedback group was performed using the visual feedback and for

OBJECTIVES: We report, with neuro-otologic findings, a very rare case of a large jugular bulb diverticulum eroding the internal auditory canal (IAC).
METHODS: We present the imaging and functional studies of a 29-year-old woman in whom a large jugular bulb diverticulum on the left side was found incidentally.
RESULTS: Imaging studies revealed a normal external auditory canal, middle ear, and inner ear, but a large jugular bulb diverticulum extending superiorly on the left side had eroded the IAC from below and behind with destruction of the petrous bone. Caloric responses and facial movement

UNLABELLED: The etiology of sudden deafness can remain undetermined despite extensive investigation. This study addresses the value of magnetic resonance imaging in the analysis of sudden deafness patients.
STUDY DESIGN: Transversal cohort.
MATERIAL AND METHOD: In a prospective study, 49 patients attended at otolaryngology emergency room of Federal University of Sao Paulo--Escola Paulista de Medicina, from April 2001 to May 2003, were submitted to magnetic resonance imaging.
RESULTS: Magnetic Resonance abnormalities were seen in 23 (46.9%) patients and revealed two tumors suggestive of meni

NMDA receptors play key roles in synaptic plasticity and neuronal development, and may be involved in learning, memory, and compensation following injury. A polyclonal antibody that recognizes four of seven splice variants of NMDAR1 was made using a C-terminus peptide (30 amino acid residues). NMDAR1 is the major NMDA receptor subunit, found in most or all NMDA receptor complexes. On immunoblots, this antibody labeled a single major band migrating at M(r) = 120,000. The antibody did not cross-react with extracts from transfected cells expressing other glutamate receptor subunits, nor did it la

REVIEW: Auditory neuropathy is a disorder characterised by preservation of outer hair cell function, with normal otoacoustic emissions and/or cochlear microphonics, but an absent or distorted auditory brainstem response.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to objectively assess hearing thresholds in patients with auditory neuropathy, using the auditory steady state response.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirteen patients with auditory neuropathy and 15 normal hearing subjects were examined. Audiological evaluation included basic audiological tests, otoacoustic emissions, auditory brainstem response and audi

OBJECT: The goal of this study was to assess the results of gamma surgery (GS) for vestibular schwannoma (VS) in 200 cases treated over the last 10 years and to review the role of this neurosurgical procedure in the management of VS.
METHODS: Follow-up reviews ranging from 1 to 10 years were available in 153 of these patients. Follow-up images in these cases were analyzed using computer software that we developed to obtain volume measurements for the tumors, and the clinical condition of the patients was assessed using questionnaires. Gamma surgery was the primary treatment modality in 96 cas

Cochlear neuropathy, i.e. the loss of auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) without loss of hair cells, may cause hearing deficits without affecting threshold sensitivity, particularly if the subset of ANFs with high thresholds and low spontaneous rates (SRs) is preferentially lost, as appears to be the case in both aging and noise-damaged cochleas. Because low-SR fibers may also be important drivers of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR) and middle-ear muscle reflex (MEMR), these reflexes might be sensitive metrics of cochlear neuropathy. To test this hypothesis, we measured reflex strength and ref

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to characterize the receptive language and speech production abilities of school-aged children with auditory neuropathy/dyssynchrony (AN/AD) and to compare those abilities to children with sensorineural (SN) hearing loss of similar age and degree of hearing loss.
DESIGN: Standardized speech and language tests were carried out on 12 AN/AD children, aged between 57 and 167 mo. Each of these subjects was a full-time hearing aid user or had been just before testing. Receptive language skills were assessed using the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) an

OBJECTIVE: To investigate auditory neural involvement in patients with Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON).
METHODS: Auditory assessment was undertaken in two patients with LHON. One was a 45 year old woman with Harding disease (multiple-sclerosis-like illness and positive 11778mtDNA mutation) and mild auditory symptoms, whose auditory function was monitored over five years. The other was a 59 year old man with positive 11778mtDNA mutation, who presented with a long standing progressive bilateral hearing loss, moderate on one side and severe to profound on the other. Standard pure tone

Examination was made of the behaviors exhibited on selected binaural tasks by 556 persons with diagnosed peripheral hearing loss or central nervous system damage. The tasks used included loudness balancing (LB), intracranial midline imaging (MI), masking level differences (MLD), and binaural beats (BB). The methods used were chosen for their clinical utility. Loudness balancing and midline imaging were of the most diagnostic value when hearing loss was present. Masking level differences were best at detecting pathology which did not produce hearing loss. None of the techniques were sensitive t

BACKGROUND: Auditory neuropathy is a disorder characterised by preservation of outer hair cells function with normal otoacoustic emissions (OAEs), but with absent auditory brainstem responses (ABR). Perisynaptic synchronisation disorder is one of the possible pathogenesis underlying auditory neuropathy. In this paper we describe the clinical presentation and audiological findings in pediatric auditory neuropathy and its management.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: 9 children with auditory neuropathy could be included in the study. An audiological evaluation was performed in all children including behavi
