A successful retrieval of a dropped corneal button from an aphakic vitrectomized eye during penetrating keratoplasty is reported. A 52-year-old female patient underwent penetrating keratoplasty for aphakic corneal edema in a vitrectomized eye. The donor button inadvertently dropped into the vitreous cavity and was retrieved successfully. The dropped corneal button was visualized after focusing the operating microscope on the retina. The purpose of the Committee on Ophthalmic Procedures Assessment is to evaluate on a scientific basis new and existing ophthalmic tests, devices, and procedures for their safety, efficacy, clinical effectiveness and appropriate uses. Evaluations include examination of available literature, epidemiological analyses when appropriate, and compilation of opinions from recognized experts and other interested parties. After appropriate review by all contributors, including legal counsel, assessments are submitted to the Academy's Board of Directors for consideration as official Academy policy.

Fifty mcg of gentamicin was combined with saline or with 0.8% sodium hyaluronate and injected into the vitreous cavity of rabbit eyes with moderate to severe Staphylococcus aureus endophthalmitis. Monocularly aphakic gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) were exposed for 10 min to monochromatic near-ultraviolet radiation (lambda = 366 nm, radiant exposure = 4.3 J/cm2) to determine if their yellow pigmented lens protected retinal tissue from photochemical damage. Presented are personal experiences concerning the application of artificial intraocular lenses in patients with diabetes and cataract. Operated were patients aged 50-76 years in whom implantation of an artificial lens of Alcon or Cilco was performed either to the anterior or posterior chamber. Using radioimmunoassay techniques, we measured the amounts of prostaglandin E (PGE) in the aqueous humor and vitreous body of 22 phakic and ten aphakic rabbit eyes. Either epinephrine and placebo, epinephrine and indomethacin, indomethacin and placebo, or placebo and placebo were administered topically for 5 months. Lenses were removed from rabbit eyes using an extracapsular technique. Animals were in three groups; no treatment (NT), post-treatment (PT) and pre- and post-treatment (PPT). Treatment consisted of 2% topical indomethacin given three times a day after surgery, except for the PPT group that received 3 drops on the day prior to surgery and drops at 3 hours and 1 hour before surgery.
