Ascorbic acid (AsA) is an important antioxidant in plants and regulates various physiological processes. In this study, we show that exogenous treatments with the oxidized form of AsA, that is, dehydroascorbate (DHA), activates induced systemic resistance in rice against the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne graminicola, and investigate the molecular and biochemical mechanisms underlying this phenotype. Cognitive changes, depression, arthralgia and dermatitis developed in a 33-year-old woman 5 years after a jejunoileal shunt for massive obesity, The dermatitis and low serum carotene and vitamin C values suggested vitamin deficiencies, The serum magnesium concentration also was low. Vitamin and mineral replacement led to amelioration of the physical and psychological symptoms; the improvement has been maintained at 18-month follow-up. The favourable changes were documented with the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory and test performance ratings.

Prolyl and lysyl hydroxylase activities in cultures of human skin fibroblasts from fetal to 94-yr-old donors were measured. In contrast to earlier studies with whole skin, neither prolyl nor lysyl hydroxylase activity was found related to donor age. Prolyl hydroxylase activity increased 3- to 6-fold when cell extracts were incubated with ascorbate and other hydroxylation cofactors before assay. A similar increase in prolyl hydroxylase activity occurred when cells were incubated with ascorbate. Lysyl hydroxylase activity remained unaltered under these conditions.

Rice is the staple food in many countries of Asia. Recent nutrition surveys in eight states, conducted by the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau of India, show that though the average energy intake is adequate, more than 50% of the households surveyed consumed less than the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) of energy. BACKGROUND: To test the hypothesis that iron deficiency is more common among pregnant Pakistani than pregnant Norwegian women in Oslo; and to determine whether differences in the diet can explain some of the differences in stored iron.
