An evaluation of plasma volume expanders in the treatment of decompression sickness.

Each of 29 goats was instrumented with an ultrasonic flowmeter transducer around the left common carotid artery and a silastic catheter in the anterior vena cava. Following recovery from the surgery the goats were subjected to a dive protocol designed to elicit symptoms of decompression sickness (DCS). The goats were returned to the surface and, following a 20-min observation period, were either left untreated (controls) or treated with one of five different plasma volume expanders. The plasma volume expanders were evaluated based on their ability to decrease the severity of DCS and the number

Development of performance evaluation tests for environmental research (PETER): navigation plotting.

A navigation plotting task, modeled after actual shipboard navigation and plotting practices, was evaluated for inclusion in the Performance Evaluation Tests for Environmental Research (PETER) task battery. The differential stability of the 9-min self-paced task was examined independently in the laboratory and during a field study conducted at sea aboard three seagoing vessels. Repeated testing in both laboratory and field conditions showed that the percent correct metric was not reliable. After 10-15 practice trials, the total completion and total correct scores were found to meet minimum sta

A statistical analysis of motion sickness incidence data.

This paper analyzes motion sickness data that has been obtained from experiments involving the Office of Naval Research motion generator. Based on the analysis, a mixture of two statistical populations has been postulated as an overall model of time to first emesis. Empirical evidence indicates that the subpopulation corresponding to early emesis is Weibull.

Space motion sickness: phenomenology, countermeasures, and mechanisms.

A summary of the incidence of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) in 27 Soviet cosmonauts who flew on missions varying from 2-185 d in the Salyut-6/Soyuz vehicle complex is presented. A questionnaire indicated that 88% (24) of the cosmonauts developed some type of "illusionary sensations" while 44% (12) presented some degree of SMS. The SMS countermeasures used in flight included an antihistaminic drug, pneumatic cuffs applied to the thigh region, application of lower body negative pressure, a head cap that restricted head movement while simultaneously providing force stimulus to the cervical antigrav

Physiological and behavioral effects of tilt-induced body fluid shifts.

This paper addresses the "fluid shift theory" of space motion sickness. The primary purpose of our research was the development of procedures to assess individual differences in response to rostral body fluid shifts on earth. Experiment I examined inner ear fluid pressure changes during head-down tilt in intact human beings. Tilt produced reliable changes. Differences among subjects and between ears within the same subject were observed. Experiment II examined auditory threshold changes during tilt. Tilt elicited increased auditory thresholds, suggesting that sensory depression may result from

Sensory conflict theory of space motion sickness: an anatomical location for the neuroconflict.

Most investigators understand sensory conflict to mean a discontinuity between either visual, proprioceptive, and somatosensory input, or semicircular canal and otolith input. Few hypotheses have attempted to define specific physiological mechanisms linking the conflict with the sickness. Suggestions that the theory be renamed the neural mismatch theory allow for the possibility that central integrative mechanisms are involved in interpreting the significance of the sensory environment and that the conflict between visual or vestibular input systems or between separate components of the vestib

Etiological factors in space motion sickness.

We compared susceptibility to motion sickness during exposure to sudden-stop stimulation as a function of gravitoinertial force level. Our findings show that susceptibility is greatly enhanced, both with eyes-closed and eyes-open, for zero-g and 2-g conditions in parabolic flight compared with 1-g test conditions. The change in susceptibility is likely related to three factors: alterations in vestibulo-ocular function which result from variations in gravitoinertial force level (28,29); the altered pattern of otolithic activity resulting during variations in gravitoinertial force level; and the

Spacelab mission 4--the first dedicated life sciences mission.

Spacelab is a large, versatile laboratory carried in the bay of the Shuttle Orbiter. The first Spacelab mission dedicated entirely to life sciences is Spacelab-4. It is scheduled for launch in late 1985 and will remain aloft for 7 d. All of the investigations are currently classified as "tentatively selected," with "final selection" and confirmation planned for late 1983. The 24 tentatively selected investigations have been combined into a comprehensive, integrated exploration of the effects of acute weightlessness as living systems. An emphasis is placed on studying physiological changes prev

Biomedical results of the Space Shuttle orbital flight test program.

On July 4, 1982, the Space Shuttle Columbia landed at Edwards Air Force Base, CA, thus successfully completing the fourth and last in a series of Orbital Flight Tests (OFT) of the Space Transportation System (STS). The primary goal of medical operations support for the OFT was to assure the health and well-being of flight personnel during all phases of the mission. To this end, crew health status was evaluated preflight, inflight, and postflight. Biomedical flight test requirements were completed in the following areas: physiological adaptation to microgravity, cabin acoustical noise, cabin at

Environmentally induced cholinergic urticaria and anaphylaxis.

Although urticaria is generally an uncomfortable condition, it is usually considered to be relatively benign. Recent evidence indicates that numerous environmental stimuli can initiate cholinergic urticaria, and severe systemic manifestations may be associated with the onset of the urticaria. Exercise-induced anaphylaxis is a specific life-threatening reaction that has been documented to occur very unpredictably in susceptible individuals with cholinergic urticaria. The occurrence of severe hypotension, syncope, or laryngeal edema poses specific limitations to optimum performance should it occ

The diving response in clinical medicine.

The diving response is now being applied clinically as a therapeutic measure to treat paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, and as an investigatory tool in dysfunction of the autonomic nervous system. This paper briefly reviews the current knowledge of the factors influencing the diving response in man, describes the procedure for optimising its clinical effectiveness, and reviews the literature concerning its relation to evoked and pre-existing arrhythmias. Present evidence indicates that the procedure is safe, however, pro tem it would be wise to use the procedure with resuscitation skill

Relationship of personality factors and some social habits to cardiovascular risk in submariners.

Correlational and contingency analytical techniques were used to investigate the relationship between subtest scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors in 1000 submariners. Groups of personality traits, both enhancing and protecting against risk of heart disease, were identified in these subjects. Personality trait patterns tending to be least associated with cardiovascular risk are tentatively identified by the three MMPI scales: psychasthenia, schizophrenia, and social introversion. On the other hand, the scales most strong

On the significance of heterophoria for stereoscopic vision.

This study was undertaken to explain the possible correlation between heterophoria and stereopsis because, in the literature, there are different opinions. The subjects were 806 recruits. They were trained as rangefinder men, of whom a perfect stereopsis is required. The permitted maximal limits of heterophoria were 1 prism diopter (PrD) vertically, of esophoria 5 PrD, and of exophoria 6 PrD. Soldiers wit abnormal stereopsis, myopia, hyperopia more than 1.75, or astigmatism over 0.50 diopters, were omitted. The heterophoria was tested with Herschel's prism to 5 m distance. The stereoscopic vis

Effects of an anticholinergic drug, benactyzine hyrochloride, on vision and vision performance.

Benactyzine is an anticholinergic agent which has been used in past years in psychiatry, but is little used today. It has central and peripheral anticholinergic effects, and when administered intramuscularly, it has a rapid onset of action. This may make it useful as an antidote for organophosphate poisoning, in spite of side-effects such as deficits of short term memory, concentration, and attention. As an anticholinergic drug it could also be expected to produce vision changes by its action on the intraocular musculature controlling the pupil and lens accommodation. We tested the drug on six

The relationship of motion sickness susceptibility to learned autonomic control for symptom suppression.

Twenty-four men were randomly assigned to four equal groups matched in terms of their Coriolis Sickness Susceptibility Index (CSSI). Two groups of subjects were highly susceptible to motion sickness, and two groups were moderately susceptible. All subjects were given six CSSI tests at 5-d intervals. Treatment Groups I (highly susceptible) and II (moderately susceptible) were taught to control their autonomic responses, using a training method called autogenic-feedback training (AFT) before the third, fourth, and fifth CSSI tests. Control Groups III (highly susceptible) and IV (moderately susce

Dynamics of subjective discomfort in motion sickness as measured with a magnitude estimation method.

Eight subjects, wearing left-right vision reversing goggles, executed sequences of controlled active head movements to provoke motion sickness. Head movement sequences were interspaced with periods of eye closure and no head movement to permit partial remission of symptoms between sequences. Subjects reported the level of discomfort experienced by using a magnitude estimation technique derived from Stevens' (1957) ratio scaling method. Using this approach, we demonstrated that the time course of subjective discomfort exhibits a profile, similar in all our subjects, characterized by both fast a

Antidiuretic hormone excretion at high altitude.

Urinary excretion of electrolytes, creatinine, urea, and antidiuretic hormone--measured as arginine vasopressin (AVP) by radioimmunoassay--was investigated in eight Himalayan mountaineers during ascent on foot from 1900- 5400 m. Specimens were collected from each individual whenever urine was voided, preserved with 1% boric acid, and subsequently pooled to give samples representative of 24-h collections. AVP was found to be reasonably stable under simulated conditions of storage. In all subjects, the observed AVP excretion rates were mostly in the lower region of the normal range and there was

Experimental motion sickness: efficacy of transdermal scopolamine plus ephedrine.

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study compared the efficacy of transdermal therapeutic system-scopolamine administered alone and combined with ephedrine sulfate given orally in doses of 12.5, 25, and 50 mg. Eight normal male students were exposed to stressful accelerations in a slow-rotation room after receiving 10 apparently identical treatments comprising the four drugs and six placebos. Efficacy of the drug was defined in terms of the placebo range and categorized as beneficial, inconsequential, or detrimental. None of the effects was detrimental. Overall beneficial effects were 60% for

Effects of whole-body vibrations on sensory motor system performance in man.

The effects of whole body vibration (WBV) were studied on subjects trained to perform on tasks involving blindfolded arm positioning (proprioceptive tasks), tracking of visual targets and control of static and dynamic torques. Subjects were vibrated in a seated position by means of a hydraulic jack. The vibration used (0.1 G at floor level and 18 Hz) was that occasionally encountered on medium-size cruising helicopter. The seat was that of a heliccopter pilot whose foam cushion was 6 cm thick with a density of 26 kg/m3. Systematic past-pointing was observed for both arm flexion and extension.
