[Physical activity of the elderly - what kind of and what for?].

Starting to exercise is beneficial even at an older age. Versatile exercise improving the condition of the respiratory and circulatory system, muscle strength and mobility is effective for maintaining functional capacity, especially among those having an already impaired mobility and functional capacity. Physical exercise can slow down the progress of bone loss, and intense exercise may even serve to increase the bone density in an elderly person. The main focus of physical activity aiming at the prevention of failings and fractures is in training that improves balance and muscular strength in

Which Comes First in Sports Vision Training: The Software or the Hardware Update? Utility of Electrophysiological Measures in Monitoring Specialized Visual Training in Youth Athletes.

In the present study we combined popular methods of sports vision training (SVT) with traditional oculomotor protocols of Optometric Vision Therapy (OVT) and electrophysiological indexes of EEG and VEP activity to monitor training progress and changes in performance of youth ice hockey players without the history of concussion. We hypothesized that administration of OVT protocols before SVT training may result in larger performance improvements compared to the reverse order due to the initial strengthening of visual hardware capable of handling greater demands during training of visuomotor int

Cognitive Function in Individuals with Chronic Hypoparathyroidism-A Prospective Observational Study.

OBJECTIVE: "Brain fog" is a frequently reported, distressing experience among individuals with chronic hypoparathyroidism, characterized by reduced concentration and reduced ability to perform day-to-day tasks. However, evidence linking chronic hypoparathyroidism to cognitive impairment is limited and inconsistent. This study aimed to explore cognitive function in these patients using a validated neurocognitive test battery, compare results with a matched healthy control group, and analyze the frequency of cognitive impairment based on normative data. METHODS: The participants' cognitive perf

Low-burden AI approach for cross-national early identification of cognitive impairment using real-world questionnaire response behaviours.

Under-recognition of cognitive impairment remains a major global public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Many cases go unrecognised because conventional cognitive assessment is resource-intensive and difficult to scale across diverse populations. Here we show that easily captured indicators of reduced survey response quality, derived from how older adults answer routine psychosocial questionnaires, can identify cognitive impairment risk across countries. Using data from 45,604 older adults across five population-based ageing cohorts, we develop a cross-nation

Posttraumatic cognitions and PTSD symptom change in massed prolonged exposure: The impact of treatment delivery on mechanisms of change.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Exposure (PE) is an effective treatment for PTSD and clarification of mechanisms of change can inform training and continued improvements. Posttraumatic cognitions have been shown to predict subsequent symptom change in PTSD treatment. The objective of the current study was to examine how cognitions related to symptom change in massed-delivered PE. METHODS: The current study used cross-lagged regression analyses to examine the relationship between change in posttraumatic cognitions and PTSD and depression severity in a two-week massed PE program for Veterans with PTSD.

Comparison of machine learning algorithms for predicting cognitive impairment using neuropsychological tests.

OBJECTIVES: Neuropsychological tests (NPTs) are standard tools for assessing cognitive function. These tools can evaluate the cognitive status of a subject, which can be time-consuming and expensive for interpretation. Therefore, this paper aimed to optimize the systematic NPTs by machine learning and develop new classification models for differentiating healthy controls (HC), mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer's disease dementia (ADD) among groups of subjects. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total dataset of 14,926 subjects was obtained from the formal 46 NPTs based on the Seoul Neuropsycholog

Machine learning for predicting cognitive deficits using auditory and demographic factors.

IMPORTANCE: Predicting neurocognitive deficits using complex auditory assessments could change how cognitive dysfunction is identified, and monitored over time. Detecting cognitive impairment in people living with HIV (PLWH) is important for early intervention, especially in low- to middle-income countries where most cases exist. Auditory tests relate to neurocognitive test results, but the incremental predictive capability beyond demographic factors is unknown. OBJECTIVE: Use machine learning to predict neurocognitive deficits, using auditory tests and demographic factors. SETTING: The Infe

An Experimental Comparison of Techniques: Cognitive Defusion, Cognitive Restructuring, and in-vivo Exposure for Social Anxiety.

BACKGROUND: One of the primary differences between Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) for anxiety is the approach to managing negative thoughts. CBT focuses on challenging the accuracy of dysfunctional thoughts through cognitive restructuring exercises, whereas ACT attempts to foster acceptance of such thoughts through cognitive defusion exercises. Previous research suggests that both techniques reduce the distress associated with negative thoughts, though questions remain regarding the benefit of these techniques above and beyond exposure to feared

Reduced posterior parietal cortex activation after training on a visual search task.

Gaining experience on a cognitive task improves behavioral performance and is thought to enhance brain efficiency. Despite the body of literature already published on the effects of training on brain activation, less research has been carried out on visual search attention processes under well controlled conditions. Thirty-six healthy adults divided into trained and control groups completed a pre-post letter-based visual search task fMRI study in one day. Twelve letters were used as targets and ten as distractors. The trained group completed a training session (840 trials) with half the target

Science Teachers' Perceptions and Cognitive Structures About Skill-Based Questions.

The study investigates how Turkish science teachers view and understand skill-based questions (SBQs). SBQs aim to assess higher-order cognitive skills, such as critical thinking and problem-solving, in line with global standards like PISA and TIMSS. The data collected via the Word Association Test (WAT) revealed teachers' conceptual frameworks and attitudes toward SBQs. The most frequently associated terms were 'cognitive based' and 'culturally context consistency'. Teachers expressed mixed perceptions, with concerns about SBQs' alignment with international standards, literacy, validity, and t

Optimising feedback provision and literacy in medical training: linking theory to practice.

Feedback is a cornerstone of all competency-based medical education and training programmes, where learners receive feedback from preceptors on various aspects of clinical performance to attain desired outcomes. However, feedback processes are often suboptimal due to lack of training and expertise of the preceptors in effective feedback provision leading to ineffective feedback that is lacking in timeliness, substance, actionability or palatability. In addition, inadequate feedback literacy in terms of poor self-awareness, affective overlay or lack of motivation to change further limits recept

Determinants of lesbian and gay affirmative practice among heterosexual therapists.

The current study tested a conceptual model based on social-cognitive theory (Bandura, 1986), highlighting the influence of attitudes toward sexual minority individuals, training hours, affirmative counseling self-efficacy, and beliefs about affirmative practice on therapist engagement in lesbian and gay affirmative practice. We recruited via the Internet 443 heterosexual psychologists (n = 270), clinical social workers (n = 110), and marriage and family therapists (n = 63) residing in various parts of the United States. The majority of participants identified as female (70%) and White (88%).

Real-Time Intelligent Coaching Versus Human Expert Instruction in Surgical Skills Training: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Real-time intelligent coaching systems are technology-based surgical training tools that provide automated, real-time, and objective feedback on learners' performance during simulated surgical tasks. Unlike human expert instruction, which relies on instructor-delivered guidance and feedback, these systems use automated performance monitoring to provide immediate feedback on aspects such as accuracy, motion economy, and errors. This systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the effectiveness of real-time intelligent coaching systems compared with human expert training in surgical skill i

Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection leads to impaired reference memory and myeloid cell interference.

Hookworm infection is endemic in developing countries, leading to poor cognitive function-among other disruptions. In this study, the effects of Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection (a murine model of Necator Americanus) on cognitive function were investigated. Though impaired cognition has been extensively reported, the exact domain of cognition affected is still unknown, hence requiring investigation. The objective of this study was to identify possible cognitive changes during Nippostrongylus brasiliensis infection in mice, using the Morris water maze. Here, we show for the first time tha

A neurotherapy protocol to remediate cognitive deficits after adjuvant chemotherapy: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVES: Adjuvant chemotherapy for breast cancer is undeniably effective in increasing survival rates but many breast cancer survivors (BCS) exhibit side effects including nausea, fatigue, stress, and neurocognitive deficits, known as "chemobrain." This pilot study explored how neurotherapy, or EEG biofeedback, a non-pharmacological approach, improved neurocognitive, behavioral, and neurophysiological deficits associated with BCS who underwent chemotherapy. METHODS: Subjects underwent 18 sessions of EEG biofeedback training, in which audio and visual feedback occurred with successful shift

Connectivity changes underlying neurofeedback training of visual cortex activity.

Neurofeedback based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a new approach that allows training of voluntary control over regionally specific brain activity. However, the neural basis of successful neurofeedback learning remains poorly understood. Here, we assessed changes in effective brain connectivity associated with neurofeedback training of visual cortex activity. Using dynamic causal modeling (DCM), we found that training participants to increase visual cortex activity was associated with increased effective connectivity between the visual cortex and the superior par

Stroke rehabilitation.

Stroke is a common, serious, and disabling global health-care problem, and rehabilitation is a major part of patient care. There is evidence to support rehabilitation in well coordinated multidisciplinary stroke units or through provision of early supported provision of discharge teams. Potentially beneficial treatment options for motor recovery of the arm include constraint-induced movement therapy and robotics. Promising interventions that could be beneficial to improve aspects of gait include fitness training, high-intensity therapy, and repetitive-task training. Repetitive-task training mi

Fusion of Low-Level Descriptors of Digital Voice Recordings for Dementia Assessment.

Digital voice recordings can offer affordable, accessible ways to evaluate behavior and function. We assessed how combining different low-level voice descriptors can evaluate cognitive status. Using voice recordings from neuropsychological exams at the Framingham Heart Study, we developed a machine learning framework fusing spectral, prosodic, and sound quality measures early in the training cycle. The model's area under the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.832 (±0.034) in differentiating persons with dementia from those who had normal cognition. This offers a data-driven framewor
