Hypersexuality Addiction and Withdrawal: Phenomenology, Neurogenetics and Epigenetics.

Hypersexuality has been defined as abnormally increased sexual activity. Epidemiological and clinical studies have shown that this non-paraphilic condition consists of "excessive" sexual behaviors and disorders accompanied by personal distress and social and medical morbidity. It is a very controversial and political topic in terms of how best to categorize it as similar or not similar to addictive behaviors including substance abuse. Hypersexual disorder is conceptualized as a non-paraphilic sexual desire disorder with impulsivity. Pathophysiological perspectives include dysregulation of sexu

Psychiatric state of college students with a history of childhood sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Childhood sexual abuse (CSA) seriously influences children's psychological status. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between CSA and the psychiatric disorders. METHODS: An anonymous and retrospective questionnaire survey was carried out in 1307 college students (aged 18-25 years; 701 females, 606 males) to investigate the participants' CSA experience by means of a complete random sampling method. The Symptom Check-List-90 (SCL-90) test was used to study the victims' psychiatric aspects. RESULTS: 22.11% (155/701) of the female students and 14.69% (89/606) of the mal

Effect of Adverse Childhood Experiences, Parenting Styles, and Family Accommodation on Patients Diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness that has multiple biological, psychological, and sociological factors. The aim of this study was to investigate childhood traumatic experiences, parenting style, and family adaptive behaviors in patients with OCD, to explore the psychosocial factors that affect its occurrence, and to analyze the correlation between these psychosocial factors and OCD symptoms to better understand its etiology. METHODS: We recruited 109 patients diagnosed with OCD (patient group) and 144 healthy controls (control group) into this study. The Obs

Innovations in the Delivery of Exposure and Response Prevention for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder is an important cause of global health-related disability. In the last several decades, exposure and response prevention (EX/RP) has emerged as one of the most evidence-based treatments for adult and pediatric OCD. Recommended as a first-line treatment in practice guidelines for OCD, EX/RP, when expertly delivered, can be superior to serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) medications alone and superior to adding antipsychotic medication to augment SRI treatment response. Despite a robust evidence base, EX/RP is not widely available. Moreover, although effective, only

[Episodic autobiographical memory in depression: a review].

INTRODUCTION: Autobiographical memory and personal identity (self) are linked by a reciprocal relationship. Autobiographical memory is critical for both grounding and changing the self. Individuals' current self-views, beliefs, and goals influence their recollections of the past. According to Tulving, episodic memory is characterized by autonoetic consciousness, which is associated with a sense of the self in the past (emotions and goals) and mental reliving of an experience. Its close relationship with self and emotion strongly involves episodic autobiographical memory in the psychopathology

Exploring the Barriers to and Facilitators of Using Virtual Reality Relaxation for Patients With Psychiatric Problems: Qualitative Focus Group Study.

BACKGROUND: Stress is a key transdiagnostic factor in the onset and recurrence of psychiatric disorders. Virtual reality (VR) in mental health care, particularly virtual natural environments, shows promising results in promoting relaxation, as evidenced by tools such as VRelax. While initial studies have demonstrated the efficacy of VRelax, further implementation in routine mental health care requires a systematic exploration of its use by patients. Understanding these perspectives can help tailor VR tools to meet the needs of users better and enhance their effectiveness in clinical settings.

[Alpha-interferon and mental disorders].

UNLABELLED: The interferon alpha stands as a reference both in oncology and virology. But its efficiency is limited by frequent somatic as well as neuropsychic side effects. As a matter of fact, the reduction or the ending of a chemotherapy treatment come chiefly from the psychiatric complications caused by the use of interferon. For about 30% of patients, various psychic disorders are noticed: personality disorders, mood disorders, anxiety states, suicidal tendencies, manic and psychotic symptoms. We thus propose a review which shall be completed by a discussion on wether the interferon is re

Effectiveness of Videoconference-Delivered Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Adults With Psychiatric Disorders: Systematic and Meta-Analytic Review.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold standard of psychotherapy for psychiatric disorders. However, the format of delivering CBT in person limits access to the intervention. The advancements in information and communication technology, especially the internet, present an opportunity for cognitive behavioral therapists to service patients or clients in remote areas through videoconferencing. Although many randomized controlled trials of videoconference-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (VCBT) have already been conducted, the overall estimated effect size of VCBT for ps

Perspectives on Remote Monitoring via Smartphones and Wearables Among Individuals With Lived Experience or at Risk of Eating Disorders ("This Could Go Very, Very Wrong"): Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Remote measurement technology (RMT) is increasingly used in health research to collect real-world data relevant to clinical states (eg, sleep, activity, and stress). Concerns exist about the impact of remote tracking via personal devices and wearables on individuals with or at risk of eating disorders (EDs) by promoting a focus on exercise, diet, and appearance. There is a lack of research applying RMT to EDs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore how smartphone- and wearable-based RMTs influence eating-, exercise-, and weight-related experiences among individuals with a history

eHealth Interventions for Anxiety Management Targeting Young Children and Adolescents: Exploratory Review.

BACKGROUND: Advances in technology are progressively more relevant to the clinical practice of psychology and mental health services generally. Studies indicate that technology facilitates the delivery of interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy, in the treatment of psychological disorders in adults, such as depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic symptoms, and eating disorders. Fewer data exist for computer-based (stand-alone, self-help) and computer-assisted (in combination with face-to-face therapy, or therapist guided) programs for youth. OBJECTIVE: Our object

Feasibility of Nationwide Remote Chronic Neural Data Collection from Recording-Enabled Deep Brain Stimulation Systems.

INTRODUCTION: Bidirectional deep brain stimulation (DBS) devices can continuously record neural activity while delivering stimulation. Due to memory limitations on the implanted device on which data are stored, frequent data downloads are required to prevent data loss. In this study, we present a novel collaborative data collection method utilizing a nationwide network of device representatives to allow frequent data transfer that reduces data loss without imposing travel burden on patients. METHODS: We collected chronic neural data from nine patients with severe obsessive-compulsive disorder

Longitudinal craving profiles in cannabis use disorder: A latent class growth analysis of the achieving cannabis cessation: Evaluating N-Acetylcysteine Treatment (ACCENT) (CTN-0053) trial.

BACKGROUND: Craving is a core clinical feature of cannabis use disorder (CUD) and a predictor of treatment outcomes, yet its temporal course during treatment is not well characterized. This study aimed to identify latent classes of cannabis craving trajectories among adults with CUD and examine associated baseline predictors and cannabis use outcomes. METHODS: This was a secondary analysis of the National Drug Abuse Treatment Clinical Trials Network's CTN-0053 trial, a 12-week, multisite randomized controlled trial of N-acetylcysteine versus placebo for adults with CUD (N = 302). Electroconvulsive therapy for adolescents with severe depressive episode and suicidality: retrospective comparison between responders and non-responders.

BACKGROUND: For adolescents with major depression who exhibit suicidal tendencies, Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is increasingly adopted in clinical practice. Yet, the precise mechanisms behind its effectiveness remain elusive, and studies on factors that influence treatment outcomes are scarce. METHODS: In this retrospective comparative study, we included all adolescent severe depressive episode patients with suicidal tendencies admitted to the Psychiatry Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University between 2017 and 2021 and received ECT treatment. Increases in functional connectivity between the default mode network and sensorimotor network correlate with symptomatic improvement after transcranial direct current stimulation for obsessive-compulsive disorder.

BACKGROUND: Non-invasive neuromodulation is a promising intervention for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), although its neurobiological mechanisms of action are still poorly understood. Recent evidence suggests that abnormalities in the connectivity of the default mode network (DMN) and the supplementary motor area (SMA) with other brain regions and networks are involved in OCD pathophysiology. We examined if transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) alters these connectivity patterns and if they correlate with symptom improvement in treatment-resistant OCD. METHODS: In 23 patients fr

[Contemporary criteria of the diagnosis and current recommendations for nutritional therapy in anorexia nervosa].

The basic criterion for the diagnosis of anorexia (AN - anorexia nervosa) by ICD-10 (International Classification of Diseases, version 10) is the body weight less than 15% of the expected normal body weight. According to DSM-IV (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders, version IV) the basic feature of AN is a refusal to maintain body weight equal or greater than the minimal normal weight. The prevalence of anorexia nervosa is 0.3-0.5% or even 1.3-3.7% if include pre-anorexic states (eg. the phenomenon of pro-ana). The main feature of anorexia is a reduction of caloric intake. Ac

Childhood neglect and parental care perception in cocaine addicts: relation with psychiatric symptoms and biological correlates.

UNLABELLED: Childhood neglect and poor child-parent relationships have been reported to increase substance use disorders susceptibility. Stressful environmental factors, including emotional neglect, could affect individual personality traits and mental health, possibly inducing stable changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and brain mono-amine function, in turn involved in addictive behavior vulnerability. Therefore, we decided to investigate homovanillic (HVA) and prolactin (PRL) plasma levels, as expression of possible changes in dopamine function, ACTH and cortisol plasma leve

Reward deficiency syndrome: a biogenetic model for the diagnosis and treatment of impulsive, addictive, and compulsive behaviors.

The dopaminergic system, and in particular the dopamine D2 receptor, has been implicated in reward mechanisms. The net effect of neurotransmitter interaction at the mesolimbic brain region induces "reward" when dopamine (DA) is released from the neuron at the nucleus accumbens and interacts with a dopamine D2 receptor. "The reward cascade" involves the release of serotonin, which in turn at the hypothalmus stimulates enkephalin, which in turn inhibits GABA at the substania nigra, which in turn fine tunes the amount of DA released at the nucleus accumbens or "reward site." It is well known that
