Exploring the contribution of cancer palliative care development toward alleviating the human crisis of suffering in low- and middle-income countries: A framework synthesis protocol.

OBJECTIVES: Inadequate access to cancer care, high mortality, and out-of-pocket expenditure contribute to health-related suffering in low- and middle-income countries, making palliative care a relevant option. How palliative care development has alleviated suffering is not systematically studied, necessitating this review's conduct. The objective of this systematic review with a framework synthesis approach is to identify and map the dimensions and indicators of cancer palliative care development and the components of integration between cancer and palliative care in LMICs. METHODS: Uni- and

Outcomes of Nonvigorous Neonates Born through Meconium-Stained Amniotic Fluid after a Practice Change to No Routine Endotracheal Suctioning from a Developing Country.

OBJECTIVE: The International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) 2015 gave a weak recommendation based on low certainty of evidence against routine endotracheal (ET) suctioning in non-vigorous (NV) neonates born through meconium-stained amniotic fluid (MSAF) and suggested for immediate resuscitation without direct laryngoscopy. A need for ongoing surveillance post policy change has been stressed upon. This study compared the outcomes of NV MSAF neonates before and after implementation of the ILCOR 2015 recommendation. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective cohort study of term NV MSAF ne

Effects of vitamin and mineral supplementation during pregnancy on maternal, birth, child health and development outcomes in low- and middle-income countries: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Almost two billion people who are deficient in vitamins and minerals are women and children in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). These deficiencies are worsened during pregnancy due to increased energy and nutritional demands, causing adverse outcomes in mother and child. To reduce micronutrient deficiencies, several strategies have been implemented, including diet diversification, large-scale and targeted fortification, staple crop bio-fortification and micronutrient supplementation. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate and summarize the available evidence on the effects of micronutrie

Effects of nutritional interventions during pregnancy on birth, child health and development outcomes: A systematic review of evidence from low- and middle-income countries.

BACKGROUND: Optimal nutrition plays a crucial role in pregnancy. Poor maternal nutrition and maternal obesity has risk factors for serious fetal complications and neonatal outcomes, including intrauterine growth restriction, congenital abnormalities, stillbirth, low birth weight (LBW), preterm birth, fetal macrosomia, increased risk of neonatal infections, neonatal hypothermia, and neonatal death. The prevalence of maternal malnutrition is higher in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) (10-19%) when compared with high-income countries, with variation by region and by country. Several behav

Quantifying and spatial disaggregation of air pollution emissions from ground transportation in a developing country context: Case study for the Lima Metropolitan Area in Peru.

Ambient air pollution contributes approximately 3.7 million premature deaths annually worldwide with air pollution from ground transportation posing a significant threat in urban areas. This concern is especially relevant in cities with fast-growing economies in the developing countries, as is the case of Lima Metropolitan Area (LMA) in Peru. Currently, there is a limited understanding of the impacts of ground transportation emissions on air pollution and population health in the LMA. In this study we quantified air pollution emissions from ground transportation, by combining local transportat…

Primary imatinib resistance in chronic myeloid leukemia patients in a developing country: BCR-ABL kinase domain mutations or BCR-ABL independent mechanisms?

Clinical resistance to imatinib (IM) in chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) carries adverse consequences. We investigated 22 CML patients who developed IM-resistance for BCR-ABL kinase domain (KD) mutations. The median follow-up for this study was 101.9 months (range: 22.2 to 176.5 months) and the estimated mean overall survival was 150.87 months (95% CI: 130.0 to 171.0). Five out of 22 patients tested positive for BCR-ABL KD mutations: 2 had T315I, 2 had E255K and 1 had V289F mutations. Of the remaining 17 patients who did not harbor BCR-ABL KD mutations, 11 patients received nilotinib while the r

The predictive value of early molecular response in chronic myeloid leukaemia patients treated with imatinib in a single real-world medical centre in a developing country.

INTRODUCTION: The prognosis of patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) has improved since the introduction of imatinib. However, patients who do not achieve complete cytogenetic response (CCyR) and major molecular response (MMR) have poorer prognosis. Recent clinical trials have demonstrated that early and deeper cytogenetic and molecular responses predict a better long-term outcome. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between early molecular response and clinical outcome in a real-life setting. METHODS: This retrospective study included all patients with CML, in chronic or acc

The actual scenario of neoadjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer in developing country: a report of 80 cases of breast cancer from a tertiary cancer center in India.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative or neoadjuvant chemotherapy is an option in patients with large operable breast cancer to facilitate the breast conservation and to downstage the disease to make inoperable breast cancer to operable one. It is also called the window of opportunity; it provides a unique opportunity to derive biological information related to tumor response. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy has been compared with standard, postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy with goals of improving survival and facilitating local therapies. Unfortunately, neoadjuvant chemotherapy does not seem to improve overall
