Nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) have been hypothesized to inhibit mitochondrial DNA polymerase gamma, resulting in decreased mtDNA synthesis and mitochondrial insufficiency in HIV-1-infected patients. mtDNA synthesis was measured directly using a stable isotope mass spectrometric method following NRTI treatment in rodents. 3'-Azido-3'-deoxythymidine (AZT) was added to water (1 mg/mL) and administered ad libitum to female Sprague-Dawley rats for 1-8 weeks (n = 4 or 5 animals/timepoint). Complete nucleotide sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome b (Cytb) and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (CO I) genes from various isolates of Taenia solium were examined. This study evaluated the effects of balloon mitral valvuloplasty (BMV) on exercise capacity and skeletal muscle structure and function in 10 subjects with mitral stenosis (mean age +/- SD 33 +/- 5.5). Mitochondrial encephalopathy, lactic acidosis and stroke-like episodes (MELAS) is commonly associated with an A-->G transition at position 3243 of the mitochondrial DNA. To determine the diversity of clinical syndromes associated with this mutation, 91 patients with mitochondrial encephalomyopathies that did not conform to the MELAS phenotype were screened. The effects of chronic embryonic ethanol exposure were evaluated in chick ventricular muscle. Ethanol treatments were administered on embryonic days 11, 13, 15, and 17 and chicks were sacrificed at various time points following treatments.
