This study describes the incidence of airsickness among military parachutists and analyzes the factors involved in its occurrence. Each of 45 healthy male subjects (28 students and 17 advanced parachutists) was studied. Each student participated in five parachute-jump exercises (one daily) and each advanced parachutist participated in one exercise only (proficiency). A questionnaire used for the diagnostic evaluation of motion sickness symptoms was completed by the subjects after each training exercise. A positive diagnosis of airsickness was established for 64% of the students on their first

For maintaining and developing motor mobility in old age motor activity is essential. We can take from the phylogenesis and ontogenesis of the human being how important physical activity is for personality development and for maintaining physical fitness in old age. Many phenomena, which have so far been thought to be due to natural consequences of the ageing process, can now be traced back to lack of physical activity. These findings are illustrated by examples referring to the most important subsystems of our organism (such as the central nervous system, the cardiovascular system, etc.). To

BACKGROUND: In heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), abnormal regulation of skeletal muscle perfusion contributes to reduced exercise tolerance. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that improvement in functional status after permanent left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation in patients with HFrEF is related to improvement in muscle perfusion during work, which was measured using contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS).
METHODS: CEUS perfusion imaging of calf muscle at rest and during low-intensity plantar flexion exercise (20 W, 0.2 Hz) was performed in pat…

Post COVID-19 Syndrome (PCS) is the persistence of symptoms after an infection with SARS-CoV-2 in both hospitalized and non-hospitalized COVID-19 survivors. Exercise was proposed as a rehabilitation measure for PCS and early studies focused on patients post-hospital discharge. The objective of this review is to summarize the results of trials investigating exercise interventions in non-hospitalized subjects with PCS and propose practical recommendations concerning safe exercise programming. A literature search in the databases MEDLINE and Scopus was conducted until 26 July 2023 and resulted in

Exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation, an effective and safe adjuvant treatment recommended to patients with coronary artery disease, is scarcely applied to patients with refractory angina (RA) due to difficulties related to safety, trainning prescription and their clinical management. This case report presents an instance of a "no-option" patient with RA, who was included in a 12-week exercise program, in sessions consisted of 40 minutes of treadmill aerobic exercise, three times a week, and intensity prescribed between ischemic/angina threshold and ventilatory threshold 1, obtained in the ca

Leg exercises through standing, cycling and walking with/without FES may be used to preserve lower limb muscle and bone health in persons with physical disability due to SCI. This study sought to examine the effectiveness of leg exercises on bone mineral density and muscle cross-sectional area based on their clinical efficacy in persons with SCI. Several literature databases were searched for potential eligible studies from the earliest return date to January 2022. The primary outcome targeted was the change in muscle mass/volume and bone mineral density as measured by CT, MRI and similar devi

PURPOSE: Sacubitril/valsartan is a mainstay of the treatment of heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF); however, its effects on exercise performance yielded conflicting results. Aim of our study was to evaluate the impact of sacubitril/valsartan on exercise parameters and echocardiographic and biomarker changes at different drug doses.
METHODS: We prospectively enrolled consecutive HFrEF outpatients eligible to start sacubitril/valsartan. Patients underwent clinical assessment, cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), blood sampling, echocardiography, and completed the Kansas City

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The beneficial role of exercise as a treatment approach in Huntington's disease (HD) has support from both preclinical work and small-scale studies; however, there have been no controlled studies of gym-based exercise in people with HD. This phase 2 randomized trial (ISRCTN 59910670) assessed feasibility, safety, acceptability, and benefit of a structured exercise program.
METHODS: Thirty-one participants (16 men; mean [SD] age = 50.4 [11.4] years) were randomly allocated to intervention (n = 16) or control group (usual care; n = 15). The intervention entailed a weekly

N-Lactoyl-phenylalanine (Lac-Phe), identified in 2022 as an exercise-inducible signaling metabolite, is formed by carnosine dipeptidase 2 via conjugation of lactate and phenylalanine. Its circulating levels rise sharply after intense exercise in mice, humans, and racehorses, reflecting increased glycolytic flux. Beyond exercise, Lac-Phe also rises with feeding and metformin, positioning it as a potential integrator of energy intake, expenditure, and metabolic homeostasis. Centrally, Lac-Phe may contribute to appetite suppression by inhibiting hypothalamic orexigenic agouti-related protein neur

INTRODUCTION: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) represents a serious global health problem. Therefore, an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is indicated in various clinical conditions as a strategy for the primary and secondary prevention of SCD. These patients benefit from a cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program aimed at improving cardiorespiratory fitness, increasing exercise tolerance, and reducing the fear of physical activity. This review aims to describe the outcomes of exercise-based CR in patients with an ICD.
METHODS: A scoping review was performed following the methodology describ…

Prolonged bedrest provokes orthostatic hypotension and intolerance of upright posture. Limited data are available on the cardiovascular responses of older adults to head-up tilt following bedrest, with no studies examining the potential benefits of exercise to mitigate intolerance in this age group. This randomized controlled trial of head-down bedrest (HDBR) in 55- to 65-yr-old men and women investigated if exercise could avert post-HDBR orthostatic intolerance. Twenty-two healthy older adults (11 female) underwent a strict 14-day HDBR and were assigned to either an exercise (EX) or control (

The peripheral T-cell pool undergoes a striking age associated remodeling which is accelerated by progressive insulin resistance. Exercise training is known to delay several aspects of T-cell senescence. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of 3 weeks regular concentric or eccentric endurance exercise training on the composition of the T-cell compartment in pre-diabetic subjects. Sixteen male older adults with impaired glucose tolerance were recruited and performed either concentric exercise (CE) or eccentric exercise (EE) walking 3 times a week for 3 weeks. Fasting v

Right ventricular (RV) function is a prognostic factor in ischemic heart disease (IHD) patients, although its correlations with exercise capacity and cardiac rehabilitation (CR) efficacy are unknown. We aimed to clarify how RV function was associated with exercise tolerance and efficacy of phase II CR in IHD patients. We retrospectively analyzed 301 consecutive IHD patients who underwent phase II CR. We defined RV dysfunction using a combination of RV fractional area change < 35%, tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion < 1.6 cm, and systolic velocity < 10 cm/s. Exercise capacity was assess…

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to determine if omega-3 (n-3) supplementation combined with acute aerobic exercise would improve glucose and insulin responses in normoglycemic, inactive, overweight men.
METHODS: In a random order, ten inactive and normoglycemic men (30.6 ± 10 years, 85.4 ± 11 kg, 26.7 ± 4 BMI) completed a rest (R) and exercise trial (EX) without n-3 supplementation. Following 42 days of n-3 supplementation, participants again completed a rest (R + n-3) and exercise trial (EX + n-3) with continued n-3 supplementation. The exercise trial consisted of 3 days of ~70 % VO2peak

Postural tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is associated with exercise intolerance, hypovolemia, and cardiac atrophy, which may contribute to reduced stroke volume and compensatory exaggerated heart rate (HR) increases. Acute volume loading with intravenous (iv) saline reduces HR and improves orthostatic tolerance and symptoms in POTS, but its effect on exercise capacity is unknown. In this study, we determined the effect of iv saline infusion on peak exercise capacity (VO2peak) in POTS. Nineteen patients with POTS participated in a sequential study. VO2peak was measured on two separate study days,

Diet and exercise can prevent or delay progression from prediabetes to type 2 diabetes mellitus, but lifestyle advice in routine care may be brief, inconsistent, or unstructured. This systematic review assessed whether structured education programmes on diet and exercise are more effective than usual care, standard advice or less intensive lifestyle intervention in preventing or delaying type 2 diabetes among adults with prediabetes. The review was conducted in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidance and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42

An increasing number of physically active adults are taking the mTOR inhibitor rapamycin off label with the goal of extending healthspan. However, frequent rapamycin dosing disrupts metabolic health during sedentary conditions and abates the anabolic response to exercise. Intermittent once weekly rapamycin dosing minimizes many negative metabolic side effects of frequent rapamycin in sedentary mice. However, it remains unknown how different rapamycin dosing schedules impact metabolic, physical, and skeletal muscle adaptations to voluntary exercise training. Therefore, we tested the hypothesis
