Development and validation of a new diagnostic prediction model for NAFLD based on machine learning algorithms in NHANES 2017-2020.3.

AIMS: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a multisystem disease that can trigger the metabolic syndrome. Early prevention and treatment of NAFLD is still a huge challenge for patients and clinicians. The aim of this study was to develop and validate machine learning (ML)-based predictive models. The model with optimal performance would be developed as a set of simple arithmetic tools for predicting the risk of NAFLD individually. METHODS: Statistical analyses were performed in 2428 individuals extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, cycle 2017-2020

Machine Learning-Based Prediction of In-Hospital Falls in Adult Inpatients: Retrospective Observational Multicenter Study.

BACKGROUND: Falls among hospitalized patients are a critical issue that often leads to prolonged hospital stays and increased health care costs. Traditional fall risk assessments typically rely on standardized scoring systems; however, these may fail to capture the complex and multifactorial nature of fall risk factors. OBJECTIVE: This retrospective observational multicenter study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning-based model to predict in-hospital falls and to evaluate its performance in terms of discrimination and calibration. METHODS: We analyzed the data of 83,917 inpatien

Multicenter Machine Learning-Based Prediction of Mortality in ICU Patients With Hypocalcemia.

BACKGROUND: Hypocalcemia occurs frequently in intensive care units (ICUs) and is independently associated with excess mortality. Conventional severity scores-such as APACHE II and SOFA-assign fixed weights to a limited set of variables and therefore fail to capture the nonlinear, high-dimensional physiology characteristic of hypocalcemic patients. Although machine learning (ML) approaches can enhance risk stratification, no interpretable model tailored to this cohort has been available. METHODS: We harmonized de-identified data from MIMIC-III, MIMIC-IV, and two Grade III Level A hospitals in

The novel role of LCK and other PcDEGs in the diagnosis and prognosis of sepsis: Insights from bioinformatic identification and experimental validation.

BACKGROUND: Programmed cell death (PCD) has emerged as a pivotal progress in pathogenesis of sepsis, but its role in identification of sepsis has not been fully understood. METHODS: Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified from the GEO database. PCD-related genes were intersected with DEGs, and key PcDEGs were identified through the protein-protein interaction (PPI) network. To pinpoint hub PcDEGs in sepsis, we applied Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), and Generalized Linear Model (GLM) algorithms. Additionally, the expression leve

Predictive modeling of breast cancer-related lymphedema using machine learning algorithms.

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is one of the common complications after breast cancer surgery. It can easily lead to limb swelling, deformation and upper limb dysfunction, which has a serious impact on the physical and mental health and quality of life of patients. Previous studies have mostly used statistical methods such as linear regression and logistic regression to analyze the influencing factors, but all of them have certain limitations. Machine learning (ML) is an important branch of artificial intelligence, which can effectively overcome the problems of multivariat

Accurately and effectively predict the ACL force: Utilizing biomechanical landing pattern before and after-fatigue.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: As a fundamental exercise technique, landing can commonly be associated with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, especially during after-fatigue single-leg landing (SL). Presently, the inability to accurately detect ACL loading makes it difficult to recognize the risk degree of ACL injury, which reduces the effectiveness of injury prevention and sports monitoring. Increased risk of ACL injury during after-fatigue SL may be related to changes in ankle motion patterns. Therefore, this study aims to develop a highly accurate and easily implemented ACL force predicti

A novel machine learning model to predict respiratory failure and invasive mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients suffering from COVID-19.

In hypoxemic patients at risk for developing respiratory failure, the decision to initiate invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) may be extremely difficult, even more so among patients suffering from COVID-19. Delayed recognition of respiratory failure may translate into poor outcomes, emphasizing the need for stronger predictive models for IMV necessity. We developed a two-step model; the first step was to train a machine learning predictive model on a large dataset of non-COVID-19 critically ill hypoxemic patients from the United States (MIMIC-III). The second step was to apply transfer lear

Early risk assessment for COVID-19 patients from emergency department data using machine learning.

Since its emergence in late 2019, the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has caused a pandemic with more than 55 million reported cases and 1.3 million estimated deaths worldwide. While epidemiological and clinical characteristics of COVID-19 have been reported, risk factors underlying the transition from mild to severe disease among patients remain poorly understood. In this retrospective study, we analysed data of 879 confirmed SARS-CoV-2 positive patients admitted to a two-site NHS Trust hospital in London, England, between January 1st and May 26th, 2020, with a ma

Predicting cell invasion in breast tumor microenvironment from radiological imaging phenotypes.

BACKGROUND: The abundance of immune and stromal cells in the tumor microenvironment (TME) is informative of levels of inflammation, angiogenesis, and desmoplasia. Radiomics, an approach of extracting quantitative features from radiological imaging to characterize diseases, have been shown to predict molecular classification, cancer recurrence risk, and many other disease outcomes. However, the ability of radiomics methods to predict the abundance of various cell types in the TME remains unclear. In this study, we employed a radio-genomics approach and machine learning models to predict the inf

Bisphenol A exposure in myasthenia gravis: Potential targets and mechanisms revealed by network toxicology and molecular dynamics.

BACKGROUND: Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a B-cell-mediated autoimmune disease characterized by impaired neuromuscular transmission. Although genetic predisposition and thymic abnormalities are well recognized, they cannot fully explain the increasing incidence and regional heterogeneity of MG, highlighting the potential contribution of environmental factors. Bisphenol A (BPA), a ubiquitous endocrine-disrupting chemical, exhibits estrogenic activity, immunomodulatory effects, and mitochondrial toxicity, and has been implicated in multiple autoimmune disorders. However, the potential role of BPA in

Securing AI-Driven Systems for Environmental Sustainability in IoT Applications: A Lightweight Message-Authentication Scheme Against Telemetry Poisoning.

Machine-learning models for environmental monitoring are only as trustworthy as the field measurements that train them, yet raw or custom LoRa telemetry links-unlike a correctly configured LoRaWAN network-carry no application-layer authentication, letting any in-range transmitter inject fabricated readings and poison the training pipeline. We propose a lightweight, unidirectional, encryption-free scheme in which each message carries an HMAC-SHA-256 tag over the device identifier, a timestamp, a monotonic counter, and the sensor payload; the server accepts a message only if its tag verifies and
