Primary lymphoma of the cranial vault: case report and a systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Bone involvement is a common finding in many types of lymphoma. Cranial vault involvement is extremely rare, and the majority of … e patients, 11.7% were immunocompromised. CT scans showed signs of osteolysis in 74% of lesions and hyperostosis in 5%, and the cranial vault was observed as normal in 18% of cases. MRI was performed in 23 cases. There was a wide range of histological subtypes, with a slight predominance of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Treatment consisted of surgery alone, s …

Clinical and Functional Characterization of Novel GALNT3 Mutations in a Chinese Child with Hyperphosphatemic Familial Tumoral Calcinosis.

Hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by hyperphosphatemia and ectopic calcifications. Mutations in GALNT3, which encodes a key enzyme responsible for O-glycosylation of FGF23, represent a major genetic cause of HFTC. This modification is essential for the stability and secretion of FGF23. We investigated a 4-year and 6-month-old Chinese girl with HFTC to characterize the clinical features, identify the causative variants, and explore the underlying pathogenic mechanism. Whole-exome sequencing followed by Sanger validation ide

Trabecular bone score as an assessment tool to identify the risk of vertebral fractures in SAPHO syndrome.

UNLABELLED: This is the first study to report that TBS seems not only unaffected by bone artifacts, but also is superior to BMD in the discrimination of vertebral fractures in SAPHO patients, which highlights the importance of adding TBS measurement to DXA images in routine clinical evaluation. PURPOSE: To investigate the impact of bone artifacts on trabecular bone score (TBS) and lumbar spine (LS) bone mineral density (BMD) measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and analyze the clinical utility of TBS evaluation for vertebral fracture (VF) risk assessment in SAPHO patients compar

Comparative analysis and differentiation between SAPHO syndrome and spondyloarthropathies using whole-spine MRI.

AIM: To determine the imaging characteristics of SAPHO (synovitis, acne, pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis) syndrome and seronegative spondyloarthropathies (SpAs) on whole-spine magnetic resonance imaging (WS-MRI) and evaluate the role of WS-MRI in the diagnosis and differentiation of the two diseases. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight patients with SAPHO and 44 with SpAs were included. All patients were symptomatic and clinically diagnosed with SAPHO or SpAs, and all underwent WS-MRI for comparison of imaging characteristics. RESULTS: The mean age of the SAPHO patients was 48.7 ± 12.…

Non-infectious thoracic discitis: A diagnostic and management dilemma. A report of two cases with review of the literature.

Discitis/ Osteomyelitis is an inflammatory process involving an intervertebral disc and the adjacent vertebral bodies. Infection is the most common cause of discitis, which is often spontaneous and hematogenous in origin. However, many noninfectious processes affecting the spine such as pseudarthrosis in ankylosing spondylitis, amyloidosis, destructive spondyloarthropathy of hemodialysis, Modic changes type 1, neuropathic arthropathy, calcium pyrophosphate dehydrate (CPPD) spondyloarthropathy and gout can mimic infectious discitis/ osteomyelitis. To determine whether a particular patient's spi

Evaluation of Commercial Next-Generation Sequencing Bioinformatics Software Solutions.

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) diagnostics continue to expand rapidly in clinical medicine. An ever-expanding menu of molecular biomarkers is deemed important for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic assessment in patients. The increasing role of NGS in the clinic is driven mainly by the falling costs of sequencing. However, the data-intensive nature of NGS makes bioinformatic analysis a major challenge to many clinical laboratories. Critically needed NGS bioinformatics personnel are hard to recruit and retain in small- to mid-size clinical laboratories. Also, NGS software often lacks the

Antiphospholipid Syndrome with Antiβ2glicoprotein-1 Antibodies as the Cause of Recurrent Tibial Vein Thrombosis in SAPHO syndrome.

The antiphospholipid antibody syndrome is defined by the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies in patients with recurrent venous or arterial thromboembolism (1). SAPHO syndrome is a rare disease, characterized by specific clinical manifestations of synovitis, acne pustulosis, hyperostosis, and osteitis. It is a disease that manifests with a combination of osseous and articular manifestations associated with skin lesions (2). Venous thrombosis complicating SAPHO syndrome seems to be uncommon with an unclear pathogenesis (3-9). Coexistence of antiphospholipid syndrome and SAPHO syndrome was no…

Morphologic-anthropological investigations in tomb K93.12 at Dra' Abu el-Naga (Western Thebes, Egypt).

In this study we present the analysis of the human remains from tomb K93.12 in the Ancient Egyptian necropolis of Dra' Abu el-Naga, located opposite the modern city of Luxor in Upper Egypt on the western bank of the Nile. Archaeological findings indicate that the rock tomb was originally built in the early 18th dynasty. Remains of two tomb-temples of the 20th dynasty and the looted burial of the High Priest of Amun Amenhotep have been identified. After the New Kingdom the tomb was reused as a burial place until the 26th dynasty. The skeletal and mummified material of the different tomb areas u

Sclerostin: current knowledge and future perspectives.

In recent years study of rare human bone disorders has led to the identification of important signaling pathways that regulate bone formation. Such diseases include the bone sclerosing dysplasias sclerosteosis and van Buchem disease, which are due to deficiency of sclerostin, a protein secreted by osteocytes that inhibits bone formation by osteoblasts. The restricted expression pattern of sclerostin in the skeleton and the exclusive bone phenotype of good quality of patients with sclerosteosis and van Buchem disease provide the basis for the design of therapeutics that stimulate bone formation

[Goethe's skull and skeleton].

In 1970 there was a conservation of Goethe's skeleton, housed in the Fürstengruft in Weimar. This procedure was kept secret until 1999. The restoration of the sarcophagus and the conservation of the skeleton have been documented together with many photos in the so-called "Sonderakte Mazeration Goethe" (special file mazeration Goethe). In this special file there are also photos of Goethe's skull and skeleton which will be published here for the first time and analysed under anthropological and palaeopathological aspects. A short description of the skull will be given. The dentition of Goethe at

Unusual cause of short stature.

A 24-year-old man evaluated for paresthesias and short stature was found to be hypocalcemic on initial presentation. Further evaluation showed that he had a low-normal parathormone level by amino-terminal assay, medullary stenosis of the long bones, and multiple ophthalmologic abnormalities. The remainder of his pituitary function, including growth hormone response to insulin-induced hypoglycemia, was normal. As no family history of similar findings was evident, a sporadic case of Kenny's or Kenny-Caffey syndrome was diagnosed. He became normocalcemic in response to vitamin D and calcium carbo

Possible cases of leprosy from the Late Copper Age (3780-3650 cal BC) in Hungary.

At the Abony-Turjányos dűlő site, located in Central Hungary, a rescue excavation was carried out. More than 400 features were excavated and dated to the Protoboleráz horizon, at the beginning of the Late Copper Age in the Carpathian Basin, between 3780-3650 cal BC. Besides the domestic and economic units, there were two special areas, with nine-nine pits that differed from the other archaeological features of the site. In the northern pit group seven pits contained human remains belonging to 48 individuals. Some of them were buried carefully, while others were thrown into the pits. The aim of

Uremic Leontiasis Ossea in a Patient With Chronic Renal Insufficiency Demonstrated on Bone Scintigraphy.

A 37-year-old woman with chronic renal insufficiency underwent bone scintigraphy to evaluate renal osteodystrophy (ROD). Markedly increased uptakes were shown in the maxilla and the mandible, which suggested extensive maxillary and mandibular hypertrophy. CT image revealed that diffuse bony thickening and ground-glass appearance in the skull, maxilla, and mandible with poor distinction of the corticomedullary junction. Whole-body bone scintigraphy images also demonstrated various skeletal characteristics of ROD. This case emphasizes the utility of bone scintigraphy for the surveillance of the
