A constrained non-rigid registration algorithm for use in prostate image-guided radiotherapy.

A constrained non-rigid registration (CNRR) algorithm for use in updating prostate external beam image-guided radiotherapy treatment plans is presented in this paper. The developed algorithm is based on a multi-resolution cubic B-spline FFD transformation and has been tested and verified using 3D CT images from 10 sets of real patient data acquired from 4 different patients on different treatment days. The registration can be constrained to any combination of the prostate, rectum, bladder, pelvis, left femur, and right femur. The CNRR was tested with 5 different combinations of constraints and

Deep Convolution Neural Network for Malignancy Detection and Classification in Microscopic Uterine Cervix Cell Images.

OBJECTIVE: Automated Pap smear cervical screening is one of the most effective imaging based cancer detection
tools used for categorizing cervical cell images as normal and abnormal. Traditional classification methods depend on
hand-engineered features and show limitations in large, diverse datasets. Effective feature extraction requires an efficient
image preprocessing and segmentation, which remains prominent challenge in the field of Pathology. In this paper, a
deep learning concept is used for cell image classification in large datasets. METHODS: This relatively pr

Self-supervised denoising diffusion probabilistic models for abdominal DW-MRI.

PURPOSE: To improve the quality of abdominal diffusion-weighted MR images (DW-MRI) when acquired using single-repetition (NEX = 1) protocols, and thereby increase apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) map accuracy and lesion conspicuity at high b-values. We aim to reduce the effect of blurring due to motion that obscures small lesions when averaging multiple repetition images at each b-value, which is the current clinical standard. METHODS: We propose a self-supervised denoising diffusion probabilistic model (ssDDPM) to improve DW-MRI quality given noisy single-repetition acquisitions in pedia

Quiescent frame, contrast-enhanced coronary magnetic resonance angiography reconstructed using limited number of physiologic frames from 5D free-running acquisitions.

BACKGROUND: 5D, free-running imaging resolves sets of 3D whole-heart images in both cardiac and respiratory dimensions. In an application such as coronary imaging when a single, static image is of interest, computationally expensive offline iterative reconstruction is still needed to compute the multiple 3D datasets. PURPOSE: Evaluate how the number of physiologic bins included in the reconstruction affects the computational cost and resulting image quality of a single, static volume reconstruction. STUDY TYPE: Retrospective. SUBJECTS: 15 pediatric patients following Ferumoxytol infusion (4

Individualized Anatomy-Based Targeting for VIM-cZI DBS in Essential Tremor.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation of the ventral intermediate nucleus (VIM) or caudal zona incerta (cZI) is effective for refractory essential tremor (ET). To refine stereotactic planning for lead placement, we developed a unique individualized anatomy-based planning protocol that targets both the VIM and the cZI in patients with ET. METHODS: 33 patients with ET underwent VIM-cZI lead implantation with targeting based on our protocol. Indirect targeting was adjusted based on anatomic landmarks as reference lines bisecting the red nuclei and ipsilateral subthalamus. Outcomes were evaluated th

Common functional principal components analysis: a new approach to analyzing human movement data.

In many human movement studies angle-time series data on several groups of individuals are measured. Current methods to compare groups include comparisons of the mean value in each group or use multivariate techniques such as principal components analysis and perform tests on the principal component scores. Such methods have been useful, though discard a large amount of information. Functional data analysis (FDA) is an emerging statistical analysis technique in human movement research which treats the angle-time series data as a function rather than a series of discrete measurements. This appr

MoCo + ROVir: Synergy Between Respiratory Motion Compensation and Cardiac Receive Region Focusing for Cardiac MRI.

PURPOSE: To improve cardiac motion representation and reduce artifacts for cardiac- and respiratory-resolved imaging through a synergistic combination of retrospective cardiac phased array RF focusing and rigid respiratory motion compensation (MoCo). METHODS: We incorporated cardiac receive focusing using region-optimized virtual coils (ROVir) and MoCo into cardiac- and respiratory-resolved low-rank tensor (LRT) reconstruction, hypothesizing that the combination of MoCo + ROVir would prioritize the LRT representation of cardiac motion over respiratory motion. We compared LRT, MoCo-LRT, ROVir-

Quantifying spatial and dynamic lung abnormalities with 3D PREFUL FLORET UTE imaging: A feasibility study.

PURPOSE: Pulmonary MRI faces challenges due to low proton density, rapid transverse magnetization decay, and cardiac and respiratory motion. The fermat-looped orthogonally encoded trajectories (FLORET) sequence addresses these issues with high sampling efficiency, strong signal, and motion robustness, but has not yet been applied to phase-resolved functional lung (PREFUL) MRI-a contrast-free method for assessing pulmonary ventilation during free breathing. This study aims to develop a reconstruction pipeline for FLORET UTE, enhancing spatial resolution for three-dimensional (3D) PREFUL ventila

3D surgical planning in patients affected by lipodystrophy.

Lipodystrophy is a pathological condition characterized by the focal or general absence of adipose tissue. Surgeons reset the patient's surface contours using injectable materials to recreate a normal physical appearance. However, due to difficulties in preoperative planning and intraoperative assessment, about 15% of the surgical procedures involved are reinterventions to improve volume or symmetry. This increases the need for an available, efficient tool capable of providing the surgeon with a good estimation of the volumes to be injected before the intervention proper begins. This work desc

Utilization of an artificial intelligence-enhanced, web-based application to review bile duct brushing cytologic specimens: A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: The authors previously developed an artificial intelligence (AI) to assist cytologists in the evaluation of digital whole-slide images (WSIs) generated from bile duct brushing specimens. The aim of this trial was to assess the efficiency and accuracy of cytologists using a novel application with this AI tool. METHODS: Consecutive bile duct brushing WSIs from indeterminate strictures were obtained. A multidisciplinary panel reviewed all relevant information and provided a central interpretation for each WSI as being "positive," "negative," or "indeterminate." The WSIs were then upl

Outcome-based multiobjective optimization of lymphoma radiation therapy plans.

At its core, radiation therapy (RT) requires balancing therapeutic effects against risk of adverse events in cancer survivors. The radiation oncologist weighs numerous disease and patient-level factors when considering the expected risk-benefit ratio of combined treatment modalities. As part of this, RT plan optimization software is used to find a clinically acceptable RT plan delivering a prescribed dose to the target volume while respecting pre-defined radiation dose-volume constraints for selected organs at risk. The obvious limitation to the current approach is that it is virtually impossi

CAROTID - a web-based platform for optimal personalized management of atherosclerotic patients.

Carotid atherosclerosis is the main cause of fatal cerebral ischemic events, thereby posing a major burden for public health and state economies. We propose a web-based platform named CAROTID to address the need for optimal management of patients with carotid atherosclerosis in a twofold sense: (a) objective selection of patients who need carotid-revascularization (i.e., high-risk patients), using a multifaceted description of the disease consisting of ultrasound imaging, biochemical and clinical markers, and (b) effective storage and retrieval of patient data to facilitate frequent follow-ups

Optimization of breast mass classification using sequential forward floating selection (SFFS) and a support vector machine (SVM) model.

PURPOSE: Improving radiologists' performance in classification between malignant and benign breast lesions is important to increase cancer detection sensitivity and reduce false-positive recalls. For this purpose, developing computer-aided diagnosis schemes has been attracting research interest in recent years. In this study, we investigated a new feature selection method for the task of breast mass classification. METHODS: We initially computed 181 image features based on mass shape, spiculation, contrast, presence of fat or calcifications, texture, isodensity, and other morphological featur

Continuous wavelet transform of laser-Doppler signals from facial microcirculation reveals vasomotion asymmetry.

Facial laser Doppler flux (FLDF) consists of a mean value and complex oscillatory components called vasomotion. Vasomotion can be expressed as spectral amplitudes (SA) after the application of continuous wavelet transform. Vasomotion is influenced by cardiac activity (frequency interval I), respiration (interval II), intrinsic myogenic activity (interval III), neural mechanisms (interval IV) and endothelial mechanisms (intervals V and VI). Asymmetry of FLDF mean value was previously documented and hereby we present homogeneity assessment for FLDF vasomotion. Mean FLDF (p<0.001), total SA (p<0.
