Mesenchymal stromal cell extracellular vesicles improve lung development in mechanically ventilated preterm lambs.

Novel therapies are needed for bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) because no effective treatment exists. Mesenchymal stromal cell extracellular vesicles (MSC-sEVs) have therapeutic efficacy in a mouse pup neonatal hyperoxia BPD model. We tested the hypothesis that MSC-sEVs will improve lung functional and structural development in mechanically ventilated preterm lambs. Preterm lambs (∼129 days; equivalent to human lung development at ∼28 wk gestation) were exposed to antenatal steroids, surfactant, caffeine, and supported by mechanical ventilation for 6-7 days. Lambs were randomized to blinded t

Complementary feeding and micronutrient status: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Proper nutrition during early life is critical for growth and development. OBJECTIVES: The aim was to describe systematic revie … of insufficient iron stores or low intake. Benefits for infants with sufficient iron stores (e.g., infant formula consumers) are less clear. Moderate evidence suggests that CFBs containing zinc (e.g., meat, fortified cereal) support zinc status in the first year and CFB fatty acid composition influences fatty acid status. Evidence is insufficient with regard to …

Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation in preterm infants.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Extremely low birth weight and very low birth weight infants are born immature and are commonly sick and are, therefore, not able to receive appropriate enteral or sufficient parenteral nutrition to meet the needs for optimal brain, lung and gut growth and development. RECENT FINDINGS: We provide an updated view of essential fatty acid metabolism and discuss the potential protective effect of fatty acids that serve as precursors for eicosanoids and docosanoids. The balance of n-3 or n-6 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFAs) supplied may enhance or ameliorate the

Iron Fortification and Inulin Supplementation in Early Infancy: Evaluating the Impact on Iron Metabolism and Trace Mineral Status in a Piglet Model.

BACKGROUND: Infant formula in the United States contains abundant iron, raising health concerns about excess iron intake in early infancy. OBJECTIVES: Using a piglet model, we explored the impact of high iron fortification and prebiotic or synbiotic supplementation on iron homeostasis and trace mineral bioavailability. METHODS: Twenty-four piglets were stratified and randomly assigned to treatments on postnatal day 2. Piglets were individually housed and received an iron-adequate milk diet (AI), a high-iron milk diet (HI), HI supplemented with 5% inulin (HI with a prebiotic [HIP]), or HIP wi…

Iron Absorption from an Iron-Fortified Follow-Up Formula with and without the Addition of a Synbiotic or a Human-Identical Milk Oligosaccharide: A Randomized Crossover Stable Isotope Study in Young Thai Children.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies showed that pre- and probiotics may enhance iron absorption. Probiotics combined with prebiotics (synbiotics), including human-identical milk oligosaccharides (HiMOs), are commonly added to infant and follow-up formula (FUF). Whether these additions enhance iron absorption from iron-fortified commercial milk formula is uncertain. OBJECTIVES: We determined the effect of adding 1) a synbiotic [galacto-oligosaccharide [GOS] + Limosilactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri)] or 2) the HiMO 2'-fucosyllactose (2'FL) to iron-fortified FUF on iron absorption in young Thai childr

Assessing fetal growth in Africa: Application of the international WHO and INTERGROWTH-21st standards in a Beninese pregnancy cohort.

BACKGROUND: Fetal growth restriction is a major complication of pregnancy and is associated with stillbirth, infant death and child morbidity. Ultrasound monitoring of pregnancy is becoming more common in Africa for fetal growth monitoring in clinical care and research, but many countries have no national growth charts. We evaluated the new international fetal growth standards from INTERGROWTH-21st and WHO in a cohort from southern Benin. METHODS: Repeated ultrasound and clinical data were collected in women from the preconceptional RECIPAL cohort (241 women with singleton pregnancies, 964 ul

Effect of β-Casein Fortification in Milk Protein on Digestion Properties and Release of Bioactive Peptides in a Suckling Rat Pup Model.

β-casein (β-CN) is the predominant casein fraction in breast milk, while current infant milk formula (IMF) contains substantially lower β-CN levels than breast milk. The impact of β-CN fortification on neonatal digestive characteristic and bioactive peptide release remains an understudied area in vivo. This study investigated the effect of β-CN fortification in milk protein on digestion properties and release of bioactive peptides using a suckling rat pup model. Rat pups were, respectively, gavaged with two milk protein solutions: one with ordinary β-CN content (OBCN) and the other with fortif

Salmonella, Food Safety and Food Handling Practices.

Salmonellosis is the second most reported gastrointestinal disorder in the EU resulting from the consumption of Salmonella-contaminated foods. Symptoms include gastroenteritis, abdominal cramps, bloody diarrhoea, fever, myalgia, headache, nausea and vomiting. In 2018, Salmonella accounted for more than half of the numbers of foodborne outbreak illnesses reported in the EU. Salmonella contamination is mostly associated with produce such as poultry, cattle and their feeds but other products such as dried foods, infant formula, fruit and vegetable products and pets have become important. Efforts …

[Nutrition in chronic renal insufficiency in the first year of life].

In the first year of life, period of maximal anabolism, optimal metabolic and nutritional conditions are strictly required. In fact growth retardation of the infant is seldom recoverable in the following pediatric ages. Conservative management of chronic renal failure in the first year of life is essentially dietetic. Normal growth is warranted by adequate protein intake (6-8% of total calories) and optimal caloric support (> 75-80% of RDA). Water requirements (evaluated on the basis of diuresis, hydratation and weight variations) must be administrated during the whole 24-hours period to avoid

Lactose intolerance and gastrointestinal cow's milk allergy in infants and children - common misconceptions revisited.

Lactose is the main carbohydrate in human and mammalian milk. Lactose requires enzymatic hydrolysis by lactase into D-glucose and D-galactose before it can be absorbed. Term infants express sufficient lactase to digest about one liter of breast milk daily. Physiological lactose malabsorption in infancy confers beneficial prebiotic effects, including the establishment of Bifidobacterium-rich fecal microbiota. In many populations, lactase levels decline after weaning (lactase non-persistence; LNP). LNP affects about 70% of the world's population and is the physiological basis for primary lactose

Lutein and zeaxanthin supplementation in preterm very low-birth-weight neonates in neonatal intensive care units: a multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Human milk feeding protects against oxidative stress-induced damage in preterm neonates, including severe multifactorial diseases such as retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD). The carotenoids, which are not found in formula milk, might play a key role in these actions. METHODS: A multicenter, double-blind, randomized controlled trial was conducted in three tertiary Italian neonatal intensive care units. All preterm infants < 32(+6) weeks' gestational age were eligible and were randomized to a single, oral, daily 0.

[Iodine deficiency in infancy - a risk for cognitive development].

Severe iodine deficiency during pregnancy seriously influences fetal brain development and in the worst case induces cretinism. Recent studies have shown that even a mild iodine deficiency during pregnancy and during the first years of life adversely affects brain development. The World Health Organisation (WHO) considers iodine deficiency as the most common preventable cause of early childhood mental deficiency. In this context, the insufficient production of the four iodine atoms containing thyroxine seems to play a causal role, i. e., due to the iodine substrate deficiency the neuronally pa

Effect of an allergy prevention programme on incidence of atopic symptoms in infancy. A prospective study of 159 "high-risk" infants.

A total of 105 "high-risk" infants born in 1988 were studied prospectively from birth to 18 months of age. The infants were recommended breastfeeding and/or hypoallergenic formula (Nutramigen or Profylac) combined with avoidance of solid foods during the first 6 months of life. All mothers had unrestricted diet. Avoidance of daily exposure to tobacco smoke, furred pets and dust-collecting materials in the bedroom were advised. This prevention group was compared with a control group consisting of 54 identically defined "high-risk" infants born in 1985 in the same area. All infants had either se
