Transmission modes of a pesticide-degrading symbiont of the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis (Hendel).

Symbionts are associated with many insects and play several multifunctional roles in insect-microorganism mutualistic relationships. The trichlorphon-degrading symbiont Citrobacter freundii (CF-BD) of the oriental fruit fly Bactrocera dorsalis was recently discovered; however, its intraspecies transmission pathway among flies remains unknown. Here, we use fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), PCR detection, and a series of ingenious experiments to reveal that CF-BD was aggregated in rectal pads associated with the female ovipositor, and the CF-BD symbiont was vertically transmitted via eg

Climate change and highland malaria: fresh air for a hot debate.

In recent decades, malaria has become established in zones at the margin of its previous distribution, especially in the highlands of East Africa. Studies in this region have sparked a heated debate over the importance of climate change in the territorial expansion of malaria, where positions range from its neglect to the reification of correlations as causes. Here, we review studies supporting and rebutting the role of climatic change as a driving force for highland invasion by malaria. We assessed the conclusions from both sides of the argument and found that evidence for the role of climate

Biocontrol potential of Saccharomyces as a sustainable approach targeting Spodoptera frugiperda.

Spodoptera frugiperda, known as the fall armyworm, is a highly destructive pest that greatly impacts worldwide agriculture, particularly maize and other key crops. Its rapid expansion and resistance to standard insecticides pose a significant threat to food security. As a result, effective and long-term pest management solutions are required. In this context, microbial biocontrol agents, such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae, offer an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. This study investigates S. cerevisiae's efficiency as a biocontrol agent against S. frugiperda. The S. ce

Engineered Metarhizium fungi produce longifolene to attract and kill mosquitoes.

Chemical insecticides have been the primary method of mosquito control, but in recent years, mosquitoes have become resistant to these compounds. Metarhizium fungi are emerging as promising alternatives and can kill mosquitoes with a small number of spores. It was previously shown that caterpillars affected by fungal infections can attract mosquitoes. However, the mechanisms and potential applications of this attraction are lacking. Here we show that Metarhizium-colonized insect cadavers release the volatile longifolene to attract and infect healthy insects, facilitating spore dispersal. We id

Transmission-Blocking Strategies for Malaria Eradication: Recent Advances in Small-Molecule Drug Development.

Malaria drug research and development efforts have resurged in the last decade following the decelerating rate of mortality and malaria cases in endemic regions. The inefficiency of malaria interventions is largely driven by the spreading resistance of the Plasmodium falciparum parasite to current drug regimens and that of the malaria vector, the Anopheles mosquito, to insecticides. In response to the new eradication agenda, drugs that act by breaking the malaria transmission cycle (transmission-blocking drugs), which has been recognized as an important and additional target for intervention,

Genus Zanthoxylum as Sources of Drugs for Treatment of Tropical Parasitic Diseases.

The tropical parasitic infections account for more than 2 billion infections and cause substantial morbidity and mortality, and account for several million deaths every year. Majorly parasitic infections in humans and animals are caused by protozoa and helminths. Chronic infections in the host can cause retardation, impairment of cognitive skills, development in young children and weaken the immune system. The burden is felt to a greater extent in developing countries due to poverty, inaccessibility to medicines and resistance observed to drugs. Thus, human health continues to be severely harm

ClTI, a Kunitz trypsin inhibitor purified from Cassia leiandra Benth. seeds, exerts a candidicidal effect on Candida albicans by inducing oxidative stress and necrosis.

Cassia leiandra is an Amazonian plant species that is used popularly for the treatment of mycoses. Recently, a protease inhibitor, named ClTI, with insecticidal activity against Aedes aegypti, was purified from the mature seeds of C. leiandra. In this work, we show that ClTI has antifungal activity against Candida species and describe its mode of action towards Candida albicans. This study is relevant because the nosocomial infections caused by Candida species are a global public health problem that, together with the growing resistance to current drugs, has increased the urgency of the search

The bat flower: a source of microtubule-destabilizing and -stabilizing compounds with synergistic antiproliferative actions.

The biosynthesis of secondary metabolites provides higher plants with mechanisms of defense against microbes, insects, and herbivores. One common cellular target of these molecules is the highly conserved microtubule cytoskeleton, and microtubule-targeting compounds with insecticidal, antifungal, nematicidal, and anticancer activities have been identified from plants. A new retro-dihydrochalcone, taccabulin A, with microtubule-destabilizing activity has been identified from the roots and rhizomes of Tacca species. This finding is notable because the microtubule-stabilizing taccalonolides are a

Plant extracts as potential mosquito larvicides.

Mosquitoes act as a vector for most of the life threatening diseases like malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever, chikungunya ferver, filariasis, encephalitis, West Nile Virus infection, etc. Under the Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM), emphasis was given on the application of alternative strategies in mosquito control. The continuous application of synthetic insecticides causes development of resistance in vector species, biological magnification of toxic substances through the food chain and adverse effects on environmental quality and non target organisms including human health. Application

[Horizontal transmission routes of baculovirus infection in gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.)].

The paper considers horizontal transmission routes of baculovirus infection in the gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar L.). The original method for modeling natural processes in controllable conditions allowed one to estimate the influence of factors on the occurrence of epizooties. The authors investigated 3 possible models of virus transmission from infected to uninfected gypsy moths: 1) infected and test caterpillars were kept and fed together (a complex route); 2) those which were in the immediate vicinity, but deprived of eating together (an aerial route); 3) test caterpillars were fed on the le

Inhibition of acetylcholinesterase by Tea Tree oil.

Pediculosis is a widespread condition reported in schoolchildren. Treatment most commonly involves the physical removal of nits using fine-toothcombs and the chemical treatment of adult lice and eggs with topical preparations. The active constituents of these preparations frequently exert their effects through inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE, EC 3.1.1.7). Increasing resistance to many preparations has led to the search for more effective treatments. Tea Tree oil, otherwise known as Melaleuca oil, has been added to several preparations as an alternative treatment of head lice infestati

Elevating larval source management as a key strategy for controlling malaria and other vector-borne diseases in Africa.

Larval source management (LSM) has a long history of advocacy and successes but is rarely adopted where funds are limited. The World Health … ion alongside other vector control methods, can effectively mitigate key biological threats such as insecticide resistance and outdoor biting, leading to substantial reductions in malaria cases in representative African settings. This argument is extended to show that the available evidence is sufficient to establish the link between LSM approaches and reduced disease t …

A study on the effectiveness of (+)-usnic acid as oral toxic sugar bait against adult male and female Anopheles gambiae.

BACKGROUND: Despite the application of various tools for the control of vectors of Plasmodium falciparum, malaria remains the major killer disease in sub-Saharan Africa accounting for up to 90% of deaths due to the disease. Due to limitations of the useage of chemical insecticides such as resistance, negative impact on the environment and to nontarget organisms, the World Health Organization (WHO) requires that affected countries find alternative vector control tools. This study evaluated the effectiveness of ( +)-usnic acid (UA) as an insecticide through oral administration to male and female

Impact of lambdacyhalothrin capsule suspension treated bed nets on malaria in tribal villages of Malkangiri district, Orissa, India.

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Insecticide treated mosquito nets are increasingly being used in malaria control programmes. One of the problems with the treatment of bed nets with conventional formulations of insecticides was that regular washing of treated nets diminish insecticidal effect. Lambdacyhalothrin 2.5 capsule suspension (CS) (2.5% a.i., w/v), a new water-based microencapsulated formulation is reported to have wash-resistant property and longer persistence on the netting material than other formulations. We evaluated the impact of the use of nylon bed nets treated with lambdacyhalothrin 2.

Corn rootworm (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) emergence patterns, survival, and injury in blended refuges and pure stands of short-stature corn and tall corn.

BACKGROUND: Short-stature corn became commercially available in the United States in 2025 and has several desirable qualities including lodging resistance and potential for greater planting density. Corn rootworm, Diabrotica spp., are among the most serious insect pests of corn in the United States. However, information about how corn rootworm interact with short-stature corn is currently lacking. To protect crops from rootworm injury, transgenic corn that produces insecticidal toxins derived from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is frequently grown. An important component of insect resistance mana

Identifying antimalarials that disrupt malaria parasite transmission when fed to the mosquito.

A decade-long decline in malaria cases has plateaued, primarily due to parasite drug resistance and mosquito resistance to insecticides used in bed nets and indoor residual spraying. Here, we explore the innovative control strategy targeting Plasmodium with antimalarials during the mosquito stages. This strategy has the potential to reduce the risk of resistance emerging because a relatively small population of parasites within the mosquito is subject to selection. After validating mosquito feeding strategies, we screened a range of parasiticidal compounds by feeding them to mosquitoes already

Permethrin-treated baby wraps for the prevention of malaria: results of a randomized controlled pilot study in rural Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Progress against malaria has stalled and may even be slipping backwards in high-burden countries. This is due to a range of factors including insecticide resistance and mosquito feeding behaviours that limit contact with widely-employed interventions including long-lasting insecticidal nets and indoor-residual spraying. Thus, further innovations in malaria control are urgently needed. METHODS: The pilot was a randomized, placebo-controlled pilot study of permethrin-treated baby wraps-known locally as lesus-in children 6-18 months of age at a single site in rural western Uganda. Using ecological observations to improve malaria control in areas where Anopheles funestus is the dominant vector.

The most important malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa are Anopheles gambiae, Anopheles arabiensis, Anopheles funestus, and Anopheles coluzzii. Of these, An. funestus presently dominates in many settings in east and southern Africa. While research on this vector species has been impeded by difficulties in creating laboratory colonies, available evidence suggests it has certain ecological vulnerabilities that could be strategically exploited to greatly reduce malaria transmission in areas where it dominates. This paper examines the major life-history traits of An. funestus, its aquatic and ad
